Mz-nh1 Accessories?

I'm trying to track down a backup USB cable for my MZ-NH1 but cannot find any part numbers on Sony's labyrinth of a website nor anywhere else.

I'm also wondering if there is a dry battery case available similar to what the NH900 has for it. Does anyone know if you can purchase this for the NH1? If so I'd probably forgo buying a spare battery (at 60bucks a pop) if I could keep a couple AA's and the dry case around for emergencies.

And while I'm on the subject, it'd be nice to have a backup AC cord (I imagine it would fit into the usb/ac connector the same way the cradle connects) for the same paranoid reasons.

As it stands now, my battery life is excellant, but when it's gone - it's just gone until I'm able to get home and plop it in the cradle for an hour. That just won't do for my worst-case-scenario thoughts.

the USB cable is a standard Normal USB to miniUSB cable - the same used in MP3 players and Digital Cameras. They cost about $10 max

to my knowledge there is absolutely no battery pack for the NH1 although if you really wanted to travel heavy you could get a battery-powered power supply which you could plug the cradel into to charge (if these devices even exist)

That’s the only annoying thing with the MZ-NH1, you can’t add another battery onto it like most other MD's! :@.... With the connection that is on the bottom of the MZ-NH1, which plugs into the cradle, is there anyway Sony could make a battery pack for it? Or would another hole/plug have to be made to use the battery? If they were able to use the plug on the bottom of the NH1 then I don't see why they don't make 1 :@ sad.gif

I have Sony and Canon digital cameras and they don't use the same USB cable as MZ-NH1's. MZ-NH1 USB cable has regular flat connector for PC side and other side has unique connector. I never seen it before, it looks like iPod connector.

The part # of the USB cable for MZ-NH1 is 1-828-071-11. It comes with Ferrite cores. I don't know how much it is.

I was thinking the same thing. The NH900 has a dry pack that snap into the bottom (where I'm assuming the charging connection on that model is located as well)... I wouldn't think it'd be much of a feat to make the same thing for the NH1... or heck it could charge itself off the AA in the dry pack. Who knows.... Would be nice though.

The whole cradle system, though i don't really dislike it, has me puzzled. I've no idea why they combined the power plug port with the usb port to be one and the same. Yet you can't power it in any other way other than the cradle and you can't utilize USB while it's IN the cradle. Doesn't make sense to me... But then Sony hasn't made sense in a while.

If anyone has part numbers before I break down and talk to someone at Sony Style tomorrow that will have ZERO idea what I'm talking about, that'd be grand.

check out www.audiocubes.com for accessories .. they have the usb-cable and, if you need, also a new battery ...

as far as I read the cradle had some trouble with a certificate in europe, that is why the usb connection cant be made while in charging stand .. first pictures on minidisc.org show the cradle with usb connection and there has been a thread with this topic in this forum .. you may use the search-button tongue.gif

@MZ-NH1: I think sony doenst count on users opinions ... sleep.gif

There are a few small problem with the NH1 compared to the other model if you want to use AA's or AAA's. First the connector, and second the NH1 runs on 6 Volts in stead of 3 Volts (for the 900 and lower). So a dry battery case would (almost) outgrow the whole NH1.

And what if you take a 9 V battery, get a spare connector somehow and connect it? How long would the 9V battery last? I don't think it will blow up your NH1, because the adapter gives way more than the 6 Volts listed (I measured once the 3 Volt adapter of my N1, it gave off 7 Volts!).

But did you measure the voltage whilst the MD unit was plugged in? I'm sure you didn't. See, the power supplies are unregulated which means that without any current being drawn, it's only natural that the voltage will appear to be higher than the nominal rating. So trust me, plug in the 9V battery and you WILL do harm because the 9V battery is pretty stable when fresh given the reasonably low current consumption of the MD units. This means that the unit is guaranteed to receive anywhere between 8.5 - 9V initially and gradually reduce as the battery flattens out along with the internal series resistance of the battery further increasing.

At any rate, I'm going to explore the option of modifying my cradle so that I can plug the USB directly into it and charge at the same time.

All you need is any old battery pack with the same size connector as fits on the cradle --it's easy to make one -- I've made one with 4 X 2200mh re-chargeable batteries in a box with a cord which connects into the 6V in on the cradle. Works a treat and any of you that can handle a soldering iron it's easy.

Get a Tin / plastic case of any convenient size, 2 springs for the -ve end and a piece of metal for the + end (or even an old 6V electric torch / flashlight case might work). You'll also need to source a very tiny connector which will fit into the cradle slot but these can be found easily enough.

OK it's a bit bulky --but it works and you did say "emergency use" and you've got an external battery pack (if you keep it a 6V you can get any size you like --including those HUGE 1.5V batteries if you want).

Cheers

The Sony USB cable for the MZ NH900 is exaclty the same as that supplied with my Olympus digital camera. The Olumpus cable also has ferrite cores attached. Assuming that the NH1 uses the same cable as the NH900, a camera dealer might be an alternative source.

:: imagines a large-pocket-sized 4 x 'D' cell pack .. along with claims for 100 hour battery life ::

Dude you are a genius! That is an awesome idea, the only thing i hate about my NH1 is the lack of a battery back up! Now i don't know too much about electrnics and circutry, but will this method have any chance of doing permanent damage to the NH1 unit? with the voltage needing to be 6V and all? is it still regulated? as i said i don't know enough about it but how safe is what your doing? How much would you charge to make one for me? tongue.gif

Outboard battery packs have been around for aeons for such things as cameras, portable lighting, video cameras, professional sound recording equipment, &c.

As long as you can find the proper connector for the power input of your recorder, and as long as you use the right combination of cells for the proper voltage and current requirements, you don't need to worry about regulation of either. DC from a dry cell is DC, period.

I have been considering building one of these myself since I [re-]discovered the problem caused by trying to record from a powered mic when usingthe AC adapter: HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

I know I've said it before, but it seems that companies like Sony have gotten so cheap that they're unwilling to throw a voltage regulator [less than a few cents each in quantity] and a capacitor into their AC adapters to prevent this kind of issue. I guess in their quest to maintain low manufacturing complexity they simply cut these things out.

Incidentally, I can also hear the hum when -playing- discs on my NH700 while plugged into the AC adapter, which is annoying as hell.

You can purchase the expansion battery packs on the Internet. The ones designed for the Ipaq 3600/3700 series work great when used with four alkaline cells. If you use NiMH cells, the voltage is not high enough to allow a DC charging cycle. Semsons.com is a site that sells these expansion packs in the PDA power accessory section. The included power plug is the right connector and polarity for the NH1 power stand.

You can also purchase the parts from a local Radio Shack.

Recently, I was recording a long radio show via the NH1 line-in. I noted a hum when I had the NH1 plugged into AC power. When I used the external battery pack, there was no hum.

What I would like to see from Sony is a smaller dock to use with expansion battery packs.
