Noam
What are the prospects for SONY to come up with HiMD media larger than 1GB? I need to be able to tape 2 hour concerts in PCM - Noam Edited August 8, 2005 by Noam
ROMBUSTERS
probably depends on the future of HiMDif they intend to release many more generations of the HiMD platform then there is no reason why > 1GB discs cant be made (although they may not work with existing models)
sebastianbf
there is a post (a very large one) in the forum discussing the posibility of sony making 2gb himd discs. Some guy heard that from a salesman I think. Just bluff.

Just bluff.←however doesn't it say in Sony's original HiMD technology release that the MO technology used in HiMDs allows for upwards of 4GB in a disc the size of a current MD? Christopher
It's very likely third generation will have a higher capacity disc to coincide with Hi-MD Video; at least 3 or 5GB.

Hi-Md Video? Is there an announcement about Hi-MD video somewhere that I missed? :-)

tekdroid
It's very likely third generation will have a higher capacity disc to coincide with Hi-MD Video; at least 3 or 5GB.←Now we're talkin'. Linear PCM recordings for longer times and Hi-MD video. Hmmm, intriguing! Hopefully coupled with half-decent bug-free, non-mp3 crippled, third-generation gear I guess that would be asking too much. Woulda thought they'd keep 1GB MiniDiscs for a while yet, so I would be surprised if they release higher capacities so soon. Not that they're not needed, of course. Many would love capacity increases. I think Sony has to increase mindshare, and this is a way to do it.
ROMBUSTERS
but will the new discs be backwards compatible with the current generation of HiMD units?

Christopher
It's hard to tell, but it's possible. I have the highest confidence that the ATRAC of old will probably be dumped by this point and we'll be using nothing but the new ATRAC3plus bitrates.but will the new discs be backwards compatible with the current generation of HiMD units?←

bogon07
Any ideas on when there will be a 3rd gen announcement......maybe Jan2006 ?
MZ-1
Video and higher capacity would seem to natural avenues of progression. It can be done -- look at UMD.Paul
Breepee2
Yet maintaining 2 formats which accomplish essentially the same thing (cheap, small, removable storage) strikes me as odd. I'd imagine making UMD writable isn't so difficult (it's a small DVD in essence). And that's also the only difference between the two (writability).Kurisu, when and how will we know more? Christopher
I've seen some patents as of late that are very informative to the direction that Hi-MD will take in the next few years. Years ago a document was presented showing the capacity of MD media ascending to a five gigabyte range. Alot of my words are very specific guesswork based on a myriad of evidence and chatter in various channels I keep an eye on, the same that I've used in the past for conjecture I present to the community that has been dead-on or very close to the final product. Can I say more? Yes, but I want to wait a little bit so I feel comfortable with the validity of such.
batfastad
Hi-MD video does sound like MD might finally have come of age.Digital camcorders recording directly onto a 5GB Hi-MD disk.mmmmWhen Sony does electronics well, they do it very well. ROMBUSTERS
it might actually give DVD recorders some decent competition
