Zappa
So here's the deal...Bought my RH910 right as they were made avaliable early last year. I've recorded a few shows with it and have had very nice results. I always keep it in a padded gear bag and it's in pristine condition. So, today I take it out for the first time since early August. I want to record a guitar jam and the with my hi-md disc inside, I press the play button to turn the unit on. I have to wait a long time (10 seconds... it was never this long before) for the disc to be noticed and once I hit play to see whats on the disc, I hear a high pitched whirring noise coming from the player every 2 seconds or so. Not cool.I popped the disc out and put it back in and this time the screen said "read error". Yikes!I tried an old standard MD disc and the unit didnt read it at all. The disc was a little sticky going in... something is up.I'm not sure what the hell happened because the unit has just been sitting un touched and un moved for a few months now. What's my best bet? Am I still under warranty?
greenmachine
It might be the same problem as this user experienced:http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showt...06&st=0&p=79637
Zappa
Thanks for the link. I went ahead and looked inside and noticed a little piece hanging down and this seems to be the part that is making it hard to put discs in. Here are two picture of what i'm talking about (the piece hanging down is circled):Is that out of the ordinary?
greenmachine
Ouch, this was the magnetic recording head. What happened to it? Did you drop the unit? You should see if you can get it repaired/replaced under warranty, there's no way to fix it by yourself.Don't put any more MDs into it, they might get irreversibly damaged. Zappa
Thanks a load for the infoAmazingly, the unit has never been droped or abused one bit... I've kept it almost exclusively in my soft padded gear bag.Like I said, it was a total surprise when I took it out yesterday and found things not working right. Thanks again for the info- I really apreciate it. e1ghtyf1ve
Holy cow, somehow it must've really snagged hard. Those magnetic heads ride on two rails. Goes to show just how careful one needs to be when inserting discs!Ouch...
Zappa
Sorry to bump an old topic, but I figured it would be better than starting a new one...So here's the latest on my broken MD unit. I called up Sony, they saw my unit was still under warranty and told me it would be a flat $29 to repair it. So, I sent in my RH910 with a check for $29.I got the word they recieved the unit and I authorized the $29 fee that they asked for (I told them to cash the check and they did). For the past week, my repair status online has said that the recorder is with a technician. Great.. I couldnt wait to get it back!Well, today, my new status is:The estimate of $77 for the sony product you have inquired about is waiting apporval for the repairWhat is this?? It's too late to call them now, so I figured I'd ask you all. Why on earth are they asking for $77 now? The player is under warranty (I provided reciepts to prove it). I thought $29 was a bit much to fix something that is still under its warranty, but I didnt mind that. $77 I did mind. Anyone know what the deal is? Are sony's warranties usually BS? atrain
tell them you were quoted $29 & tell them it'll be going to consumer affairs or whatever your local ombudsman is called.
greenmachine
Why do they call it warranty you have to pay for it? Is there something i'm missing here?
atrain
probably have to pat for the labour involved in the work. it's still crappy service & don't be afraid to tell them.
greenmachine
How about renaming it to 'limited time repair service' to avoid confusion if they don't offer a real warranty?
altpc
yowch! Sorry to hear they aren't sticking to their quoted flat rate! My rh910 had a different problem about 2 months after I bought it and they exchanged it without a hitch. US warranty is 90 days labor, 1 year parts I guess. I of course, had to pay postage one way. -altpc
Zappa
Thanks for the repliesAfter getting the runaround a few times on the phone today, I got the answer as to why the price quote changed. $29 was the exchange fee... they'd exchange my broken player with a refurb. Thats fine with me. Mine was in great condition, but I figured I could buff out any scratches or whatever on the new one.Well, it turns out they dont have any refurb models instock right now, so they went ahead and decided they'd fix it instead (for a cost of 77 dollars). A few people on Sony's main tech support line were no help in getting me to tell them I didnt want that option. So, I called straight into the laredo facility and talked to the guy who has been handling my player personally. He told me how they were out of refurbs. Since they were out and they quoted me $29, he'd go ahead and fix mine for that cost of $29... an idea I was quite happy with.So thats where its at. They're working on it now.It took a little while and a bit of time on the phone and some frusteration, but it looks like everything will be ok. I'm pleased until I post otherwise
Skradgee
Sounds good. That's the same deal I got with my defective NH1, and it seems to be working fine now.
bland10000
Glad to hear the news, Zappa. Good for you for putting in the time and effort to go up the ladder and talk to someone involved with your repair.
