I went to Yodobashi Camera today intending to pick up an rm-mc40elk remote to use with my rh10 and eh70. The salesclerk said that the 40 is for first generation only and then he showed me the most recent Sony catalog and sure enough, the 40elk is listed as only being compatible with 1st generation.

Anyone with a second generation unit given the 40elk a try? and how was it, everything function?

Works perfectly with the DH10P - the only thing maybe someone with an RH10 could add is whether the recording functions still work - viewing levels, adding trackmarks etc..

I just plugged my rm-mc40elk into my RH10 and is seemed to function very well, even with recording. However to put it into manual rec level mode I have to initiate the mode on the player. But then the levels showed up and I could adjust them. You can use the play/pause button to add track marks. If you want me to try anything else out let me know.

It's kind of funny, the 40elk does not display or act the same depending on what unit it is hooked up to AND if it is an MD or a Hi-MD disc. I've tried it on several 2nd gen units, and it does not act the same on any. :(

With the 600D, you can cycle through several different displays using the "Display" button. With a Hi-MD you can get various combinations of Artist-Group-Album-Track. You can have it all on one page. For an MD, you are kind of stuck to Track# and Time on one line, artist-track name on line 2. Press display and you get an animation according to your EQ type. (Trumpet for Jazz setting, etc..)

With the RH10, it is very different. To change the display you have to actually go into the unit menus and navigate to make your changes. Pressing the display button on the 40 ELK with a Hi-MD disc doesn't actually do much. You have full access to the menu however, whatever you can do on the jog of the unit you can do with the remote. Even setting EQ works fine. Using the Sound button on the 40elk only activates or deactivates the last setting you had. If it was Jazz, then it will turn Jazz off and on. You have to go into the menus to change it to Rock say...

One thing I actually liked better with the 600D: When scrolling through tracks it was like when you navigate file folders on the RH-10. Groups showed up as folders, you entered on a group then your tracks appeared. You entered again on the track and it would play. On the RH-10 all the tracks show up one after the other. I find it makes it harder to navigate on the RH-10. I tried putting my little RH-10 in group mode, does not change the display. I tried every combination of buttons, settings, etc...

I remember someone on this board had posted a link to a manual of the RH-10 that had a section on the 40ELK since it shipped with it in their country. I'd love to get my hands on that, took me a while to find out how to A->B on the remote. They ghosted my work comp so I lost that manual

Oh, forgot to mention, if you are going to test it out with your RH-10, you will want to know how to access the unit's menus from the remote. Give it a full tryout.

Just hold the jog shuttle down for 2 seconds, like you would the "-menu" button.

This raises the question of how to bookmark tracks with it. Still trying to figure that one out <_<

I'll try recording with the remote after work tomorrow morning, see how it goes. Never really tried it. The EQ graphical representation on the remote is interesting, curious as to how they implemented the recording levels and such. ^_^

Well, I did get the 40 today. Plugged it into my player and right away I was pleased to see the multi-listing of songs like on the mz-n10, n910, n920, and rh10. I like seeing what songs are available without having to actually go forward as we do with the one-line remotes. The toggle forward/backward button is different and easier to manipulate when pushing forward or backward within a song. The ten-track jump buttons are gone but with the scroll wheel there isn't a need for it.

I haven't tried it out with my recorder yet but as a replacement for the player remote I think the 40 is worth the purchase.

Bland sorry I didn't manage to reply in time, I didn't get a chance to test it fully with the DH10P until this morning by which time you'd already got one. For what it's worth it works much as it does on the NH1/EH1 (minus the battery info) and also does so on the EH70 from what you say.

no problem, Richyhu; the scroll-wheel alone makes this remote a valuable tool to have with the player. Hi-md holds alot of music so being able to see what is on the disc via scroll-wheel rather than clicking song by song is a time and effort saver.

I agree - this is the most valuable feature for me as well. It is very difficult going back to the stick remotes I have found after using the 40ELK now for a couple of months with all my units.

Me too. I found the 3 line display very useful. That's why I'm still using the Hi-MD till now. No need to take out the unit if I want so scroll for the songs. Hopefully Sony will come out with cooler 3 or more line display remote. As it's quite worring that there are no new remotes other than the sitck designs. :D

The 3 line scrolling is amazingly fun :D

As I mentionned above I just wish the RH-10 would send the proper info so I could scroll through just the names of the groups on the display and enter the one of my choice.

Kind of funny that the 600D handles it fine and the actual RH-10 unit does it ok from within the menu when you choose group mode.

Just remind me here what the issue was as the DH10P works fine (same as 1st gen), and it seems strange that the RH10 is different.

Strange, mine doesn't do that.

If I use the jog shuttle on the 40ELK with my RH-10 I scroll through all available songs. It doesn't show the groups as folders, just one endless list.

The way Bland describes it is how it works on my 600D. It also works that way on my actual RH-10 display when I use it directly.

Been doing that since I got the remote really. Tried all combinations of play modes and display settings, it still does the same.

Very strange. Maybe the difference with the american model I purchased here in Canada?

ooh, egg on my face. My remote was plugged into the eh70 player when I tested the groups. Plugged into the rh10 (double-checked this time) I get exactly what you get, MZ. The graphic "gp #" and then I have to toggle through the individual tracks to get into the next group. I mention toggle specifically because scrolling through the folder won't take me to the next group.

Rich's shows groups on the dh10p, your 600 shows groups, and my eh70 shows groups. So it works on 1st and 2nd generation player units just not on the rh-10. Perhaps having a line-in makes the difference.

The RH-10 is the only one I own that does this.

Possibly that it is the only model I have ever seen that you have to use the internal menus to view in group mode?

On the unit:

Menu

MainPlayMode

Group Mode

(Get List of Groups as Folders to select one)

On the remote:

Menu

MainPlayMode

Group Mode

(Group Mode blinks a few times then goes back to main playing screen)

Think it's the way it's coded into the firmware. It is the main unit after all that tells the remote what to show.

I don't think the physical presence of a line-in makes a difference rather it has to do with options present on line-in and non line-in models. So far, the models that do display folders do not have a line in.

I just tried the 40ELK with my brand spankin' new MZ-NH900, and it displays folders that open up into track listings, with the other folders still accessible.

With the RH10, it is very different[...]You have full access to the menu however, whatever you can do on the jog of the unit you can do with the remote. Even setting EQ works fine. Using the Sound button on the 40elk only activates or deactivates the last setting you had. If it was Jazz, then it will turn Jazz off and on. Am I to understand from this that one can change equalizer settings with the 40ELK and the RH10? If this is the case, could someone please tell me how to do this? No combination of buttons seems to work.

This, the fact that you can only toggle Normal Sound mode and any current mode you happen to be using (i.e. not scroll through sound modes), and that the scrolling on the remote seems slightly sluggish for the amount you pay for it are the only real cons I have with the 40ELK. At first I thought it was a bit bulbous but I got used to it quickly and love it! Very well-constructed and the dials have a great feel to them...great for boppin' about downtown with your tunes B)

Wow, ok, just figured out how to do it for the groups.

Press the jog on the remote once quickly. You can view the tracks on your disc in a variety of ways. Select by group, there are your folders.

I feel silly, I never held it down for a short amount of time.

Ok, if I could just figure out how to bookmark I'd be ok.

Sorry there Wayward, seems I can't figure out how to get that EQ back like I used to. I'll work on that.

To access the 6 band equalizer, hold "sound" button for a few seconds.

SWEET! This does indeed bring up the EQ; using the jog dial, you can then select from any of the Sound settings!

To those of you who own the 40ELK and didn't know this (like me): to change your Custom EQ settings, select Custom1 or Custom2 and push the jog dial. You can then change any of the bands (selected one blinks) by rolling the jog dial up and down and using the FF/RW button to move between them. Push the jog dial in again to save your changes.

If only being wrong was always this rewarding!
