Can I slow down the USB transfer rate with Sonic Stage/Simple Burner?

I recently got a new NH1 and am having issues with some CD's when they get ripped by Simple Burner - these same issues exist when I import the disc via SonicStage, as well. I can get to a certain point or track and the PC locks up and freezes, and the transfer comes to an abrupt halt.

I had/have this same problem when using Net MD functions with my N910.

About an hour ago, I had to abort such a transfer using SB and linear PCM. The PC locked up and I lost the Hi-MD blank as I now get an error message; the disc is toast, totally unusable, not cheap, either.

Is there any way to choose the transfer rate via USB (say 24x instead of 48x)? I know this will add more time to the project, but it should be more reliable.

If not, I cannot accept this situation and will have to go back to using legacy MDLP with my D5C deck or even TOS-link connectivity to a PCDP. That always works.

- if it happens at the same track/time, it's probably something with the CD, try ripping with Exact Audio Copy and import the wav's into SS, then transfer

- "the disc is toast" - sorry, but ??? the only way to be toast would be physical damage to the disc surface itself... if it just doesn't read anything, use SS, SB or the recorder itself to reformat... if it really doesn't work, check the disc in someone elses HiMD (if possible) if it still doesn't work and the disc is totally screwed then it would mean the recorder is damaging the disc (but for this to happen on two recorders at the same time would be very unlucky/unlikely)

check the things I mentioned and please report back

PS: and sorry, no you can't slow the transfer down

I'm assuming it's always the same cd's that give the problem? Have you tried importing to WAV and transferring "As-Is" in Sonic Stage to get the PCM tracks on to the unit. (As opposed to using Simple Burner). - Try with one track first to see if it gives the same problem (and maybe to a Hi-MD formatted 80 min disc if you don't want to risk another 1GB disc). I have only had this happen to me once with my NH1, and I was able to get the disc back by formatting from within Sonic Stage.

Weird thing just hapned - I was getting a disc error message as I tried going through the menu to erase/reformat, then put the NH1 back on the cradle, took it off, popped back in the "toasted" disc, and it did a system file check (TOC Edit) and it appears the disc is now usable, again.

EAC is an option but it's almost real time.

I'll see if I can rip that CD as a WAV without any issues, then take your suggestion. Thanks.

1.8 GHz Athlon processor, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive.

After trying to import as a WAV file in SS, I managed to get 97% of the disc to transfer but had to abort the last track; it seems that I got a bit further than I did using SB but still could not get it, totally. At least I can stop the importing (and thus save the Hi-MD blank) if I get a freezeup without crashing the PC, as it did when using SB.

Whatever, I simply accept the fact some CD's will be a problem. Such PC->MD transfers are not terribly reliable from my experiences.

Some CD/DVD drives are simply not suited for error-free high speed audio CD ripping. Slow that process down until you don't get audible errors. I usually rip CDs at 4x maximum. My laptop drive is sometimes giving me problems even at low speeds. Also check the condition of the CD surface itself. Use a ripping software that allows to set the maximum ripping speed. Import the .wav to Sonicstage and then transfer (at full speed).
