Playing MP3s on MZ-RH910

Hi, you all

I've just received my new stuff and wanted to try MP3 reading/listening on it. I copied MP3 files on the minidisc (not a Hi-MD one) and... no sound. Just a message saying "NO TRACK".

The copy has been made through the dedicated cable from files on the computer.

My questions : To read and listen to MP3 files,

Is it necessary to use a Hi-MD disc ?

Is it necessary to tranfer these files using SonicStage 3.4 (installed on the computer) instead of dragging and dropping them ?

Is there an option or something else to activate in the configuration menu ?

Is my MZ-RH910 dead on arrival ?

By the way, it takes a long, very long, time to copy on the disc through the dedicated cable. Way too long. Maybe USB 0.5 :(

Many thanks in advance for your responses.

yeah, you must use SonicStage to transfer tracks to the disc, even if they are MP3s. Also once a disc is formated as Hi-MD there will be a couple files and folders there, DO NOT ERASE THEM or you will have to format the disc manually (not using sonicstage but with the unit as a standalone)

once MP3s are uploaded you will not see them if you browse the disc in windows explorer

and last but not least, not all MP3 bitrates are supported, all high bitrates of music MP3 are OK, but if you upload a podcast since is a lower bitrate, it will not play it; then you just, in sonicstage, convert the file to atrac or atrac plus (your choice) and then once that is finished, right click on the file and then go to properties. in the new window that showed up, go to the last tab and then it will show the location of the MP3 file and the Atrac file, delete the MP3 file, what i do i just copy the mp3 to a temp folder and i work from there so when i delete the MP3 file, i have an original mp3.

hope this helps

What you have now is a copy of your MP3's on minidisc, you could go back yo your computer, or anothe computer and use it to play off your unit, but if you want to liste, again, you need Sonic Stage, get 3.4, as well as simple burner, for when you want to put a cd onto minidisc.

Well.

I understand that when a music file (MP3 or other) is "dragged and dropped" on a disc it is not recognized as a music file and can't be played doing this way. It's simply a file as many others that can be found on the disc.

To be played a file has to be added on the disc using SonicStage.

So, does a MP3 file transferred using SonicStage remain a MP3 file or is it transcoded in ATRAC ? If so (transcoded), what are the best settings to use ?

I think this is my last question on this problem.

Many thanks to all and everyone who responded.

If you are using the RH910 or any of the 2nd Gen Hi-MD units, you don't have to transfer to ATRAC, just make sure your transfer settings are set to "Standard Transfer Mode" which will leave it as an mp3 that will play as an mp3 on the Hi-MD.

OK. OK. All that is clear in my mind and I'll begin to record according to your suggestions ASAP.

Thanks a lot.

As you are new to the RH10, it might be worth taking the mp3 of a piece of music you are familiar with and importing it to the RH10, firstly as an mp3 (no conversion), and then converting it to ATRAC3+ and importing again, and then comparing the two.

Several people (including myself) have reported that they find the mp3 doesn't sound as good as the converted one (at least not withour tweaking the equaliser settings on your player).

Don't both with MP3s on the RH10; they sound really flat. Besides, if you convert MP3s to Atrac, you will lose more sound and the result won't be good at all.

i've been thinking about this, and i don't see why some enterprising young programmer/md user can't make a winamp plugin to allow downloading from your computer to the md or himd unit. i'm sure there are enough fed up sonicstage users out there to make it a hit program, and since winamp is now allowing portable device support in the 5.2 beta versions, there is some sample code (ml_pmp.dll). there's alraedy soemone making a plugin for the sony hd players as well, link below.
