NW-A3000 battery charge

Having just bought an NWA3000, I noticed that the battery is charged every time is connected to mu p.c.

As batteries have a 'memory', it is always recommended that rechargeable batteries are not re-charged when only slightly discharged, but to allow to drain almost completely before charging.

This, apparently, increases the battery life.

Seems to me that the Sony system prevents this and will therefore lower the battery life.

p.s. 35 hours battery time at full charge?? - rubbish!! more like 12 at most.

Sony Doesn`t allow us to disable the USB charging when player connected to the computer.

At what Bit rate & in which format are you listening your songs in your A3000?

Higher the bit rate of the playing file and with most of lovely settings on more battery is consumed.

*35 hours whole listening the player with Atrac3 plus 48kpbs only(Mentioned by Sony )

Also Atrac codec is more battery efficient than Mp3 codec .

The NWA3000, and most, or all Sony devices with built-in rechargable batteries, use Lithium-Ion or Li-on batteries which aren't susceptible to the memory effect like older Nickel-cadmium (Ni-cd) or Nickel metal hydroxide (Nimh) batteries.

So you shouldn't worry too much about your player being charged EVERY time you you plug it into your PC, AS LONG AS you remember to let the battery go through a full charge cycle (drain and then recharge) every so often as a form of maintenence for both the battery and the player.

The pdf manual explains a little bit about lithium-ion batteries and the memory effect and why it's okay to plug your player in and charge it before it's empty.

You can't ever expect the battery to last to its max on the first charge, it will get better and better as you charge it more.

I gotten so far 22 hours with on and off use on my A3000 with only mp3 files on it, all 192 or above cbr and vbr.

Quite why anyone would wish to listen to music at a rate as low as 48kbps is beyond me!

When I first got my player, I did a 3 full charge/discharge cycles to condition it. You should do this when you first start using it, and also do a full charge/discharge every month or so to reset the battery meter, which naturally becomes less accurate as you keep doing small recharges.

thanks for all the advice! i was about to make a similar topic myself. i was getting a bit worried that my player seems to be dropping battery life really quickly, but having had it for about 2 weeks now i've only actually let it complete a full battery cycle once.

i'll be sure to do a full cycle regularly from now on! so far i've just been filling it up as soon as it drops to 3/4 or 1/2!

You should NOT drain Li-Ion batteries, they're different then Nimh in that respect.

really, really indepth stuff. i only read the section on Nimh charging because I go airsofting. Now i need to find a Nimh charger for my brand spanking new 9.6v 3600mah nimh battery because the one I have at the minute only does Nicd.

Repeated Battery Charging

The player's battery uses a technology that is NOT subject to "memory effect." Charging a battery that is not completely discharged does NOT reduce the battery's capacity.

....and if you read a bit more about lithium batteries you will find out that they can be charged about 400 times - no matter if they are almost empty or still quite full.

So - charge it every day and after one year you can get yourself a new battery.......................
