I'm always greatful to "The Early adopters" as they can "get the bugs" out of equipment before we "lesser mortals" get our grubby mits on it at a much cheaper price.

However in this particular instance I'd caution them to "Hold their Horses" for a little while longer yet.

There's going to be an almighty battle between the HD format (not Hard Disk BTW) and the Blu-Ray with no quarter given or prisoners taken. It's more or less Toshiba Vs Sony with Philips waiting in the wings to join the winning side.

It wouldn't be so bad if the two formats weren't 100% incompatable. At least with DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) equipment reads and writes BOTH formats.

DVD-RAM is an exception as it was primarily designed for long lasting backup and data archiving, however it does have the excellent advantage in that you can actually record a TV program AND PLAY BACK another program (from the same disc) at the same time --a very very nice facility if you've ever used a DVD-RAM recorder.

Some Panasonic computer drives will also read / write DVD-RAM as well as the other formats so even here with a more specialized DVD format you can get a single device to handle the various different formats.

With Blu Ray or HD only 1 winner will be there and if you back the wrong horse you'll have a load of unreadable media as it really ios War to the Death between SONY and TOSHIBA.

This is one case where I'm quite happy to sit on the sidelines and with external hard disks becoming cheaper and cheaper a 1 TB disk (that's 1000 GB for our more "numerically challenged" members) is now available for around 235 USD amazingly) and with film content being available "On Demand" by Satellite TV or even download one could even argue that DVD is a medium whose time has passed even before it has reached maturity.

Cheers

I get the feeling only the PS3 will use Blu Ray. It'll be like another UMD. A nice curious format. Relegated to a single platform. As much as I hate MS, I don't want Blue Ray to win the war. Sony has become more evil than MS was. Honest.

(Mind you, I'm tired and ate too much. So take this post with a pound of salt)

  • 3 weeks later...

Looks like you can get a brand new recorder/player from here now (Sony Blu-Ray recorder/player on eBay) if you're willing to pay US$3,695.00 + $95 shipping.

The recorder already comes with one 23GB BD, but they also sell BD blanks with $55 shipping:

5 for $425

10 for $645

25 for $1425

re-reading this thread is sure entertaining me tonight; lol. i would roll all over the floor; but there is not room for it.

with Sony's track record; only a "fool" would spend that much money on a iffy product.

i am will to eat my words; when and if they get the proce down a drastic bit; ok. i'll go in the hallway and roll.

Wrong device at the wrong time.

HD TV (High Definition TV) is here now in the which once you've've seen it on a decent screen absolutely BLOWS AWAY current DVD technology. The new HD TV recorders - embedded in the new DIGIBOXES (from SKY TV in the UK) come equipped with large Hard Disks as well for recording movies.

Hard disk devices IMO are better these days as they support ALL FORMATS (data on a Hard disk is just a file system).

Hard Disks don't suffer Format compatabilities either. You can use them on ANY computer platform. (OK I know there are different file systems but all you need to do is just create a file system on the appropriate OS - this process is more commonly known as "Formatting a Disk").

No probs with recording DVD's in ANY format. All you need is the appropriate software, and Disks are much faster than DVD's anyway.

Remember you can get 1 TB ( that's 1000GB) disks for around 250 USD now.

A single Blank Blue ray 20GB DVD will cost around 20 - 30 USD making hard disks a much cheaper option to say nothing of the cost of the player which will have compatability problems with previous and competing formats. And in any case try finding a Blu-Ray DVD WRITER at the moment to say nothing of paying 1000 USD for just a player.

What on Earth would you watch on a Blue-Ray player - a 60 USD movie which you can probably get for 5 USD in current formats.

Remember most people don't have really large TV's at home so unless you've got someting like a 42 inch screen HD TV won't offer the average viewer much. At sizes below 28 inch I doubt whether people would really see much difference. IMO HD TV starts becoming noticeably good at sizes around 32 inch and better and you have to have a proper HD TV.

I think this is one area of technology where I'm just going to sit it out until all the format wars have been played out and there is a SINGLE UNIFIED standard.

I'm quite happy to record DVD's on the new SKY Digibox. You can copy these to any other disk as well. It's just a DATA FILE as far as the OS is concerned.

The only possible use for Blu Ray as far as I can see is for larger Optical archiving storage media - but here again there may well be better formats in the future.

Cheers
