Webmaster
A 1997 Matsushita technical paper on Minidisc media longevity finds that data on MDs should be safe for years. From the article: "We have measured the lifetime of the rewritable type MD applying the measuring method used for data storage optical disks. It is considered that life of the recording film of the rewritable MD media currently available in the market is extremely long." Lots of detailed charts point out the effort they went through to simulate age-related effects on the media.
ozpeter
Nine years ago... they should have had the chance to put the poor little disk through a good few writes and reads since then, for real!
shione
Nine years ago... they should have had the chance to put the poor little disk through a good few writes and reads since then, for real!I still have discs from 97 which work fine to this day. My player is 100% perfect too. (won't comment on the state of the remote )I left my music collection in my car one time (was moving houses), I was parked out in the sun and while my cds (commercial and cdrs) were cooked, all my cds were flawless.. no warping or data loss. I would trust putting computer files on a himd more than a cdr[w]/dvdr+-.
garyc
Agreed... they really are bullet proof, I have loads on the floor of my care, always get stepped on by passengers, roasted by the sun, drinks spilt on them - they all continue to play flawlessly
danielbb90
Grape POP is a nightmare to some of my MiniDiscs...My brother threw on minidisc at a wall it took 3 attempts for it to break, and then is hit the corner of a radiator! And the didn't brake the case, just the disc inside! bchallman
Even though my MDs are more dependable than any other media I use -- even VHS or audio cassettes -- they do seem to fail now-and-again. I've had maybe three that have done so.None seems to be because of age.
garcou
I've experienced that it depends very much of the md's label: Never one problem in 12 years of use with Sony or TDK's MDs Cannot say the same with MPO's, EMTEC's, FNAC's and Memorex's
bchallman
I've experienced that it depends very much of the md's label: Never one problem in 12 years of use with Sony or TDK's MDs Cannot say the same with MPO's, EMTEC's, FNAC's and Memorex'sI haven't followed the label too closely. The most recent one to get errors was a Sony. I have a bunch of cheapie discount MDs from Japan branded "DAISO" (like their Dollar Store) and none of them have failed. Of course, it occures to me that it could be my MD player. I'm not sure, since some disks keep playing perfectly while some disks keep getting errors. I should also mention that I have about 10 disks that I use over and over and over again. It is my habit to listen to the radio "time shifted," so some disks have been used many times, even for years.

alby
I have accidentally put two of my sony minidisc's (1 gig) through the washing machine. The both worked fine after this small mishap. The second one had the metal gaurd come off. I pushed that back on and everything was fine.
bchallman
I don't have any real torture-test stories but I've dropped them a bunch of times and a few times had that little metal thing pop off. Each time I popped it back on and it kept working.
