atrain
pretty much anything before himd. so SP, MDLP & NETMD units can all be called 'legacy'
jaylen
What he said. If you want to read up, here is a good place to start:http://www.minidisc.org/faq_index.html
raintheory
As far as Hi-MD units are concerned: 1st gen units (NH1, NH900, etc.) can record and play these but can't upload them. 2nd gen units (RH10, RH910, etc.) can playback, but can record these formats only via SonicStage. And no upload. 3rd gen (RH1) can record, playback and upload. Edited July 3, 2006 by raintheory
Sparky191
pretty much anything before himd. so SP, MDLP & NETMD units can all be called 'legacy'I always assumed it referred to the original format ATRAC SP 292kps.

Tunster
Glad to see somebody is paying attention! I'm sure legacy is anything pre-NetMD; meaning SP/LP2/LP4. LP2/LP4 are modified version of the original SP codec and named ATRAC3. Sony has always refered legacy as SP/LP2/LP4, especially in the new RH1 unit, as it explained you could record "legacy" formats (meaning SP/LP2/LP4) on the unit compared with the 2nd Gen units. You could class SP/LP2/LP4 as 1st generation MD codecs. Sparky191
First generation MD players only had SP only. LP2/LP4 came later.
Tunster
First generation MD players only had SP only. LP2/LP4 came later.Of course. I know LP came later. But, you can consider it the same batch technology as Atrac3plus technology was the 2nd generation of MD codecs.LP2/LP4 is based on SP using the same techniques, but fine tuning it at lower bitrates. faulkner1953
I guessed that legacy referred to anything that is not HiMD.

So, faulkner is also right - anything that isn't Hi-MD.
