Spent the whole morning comparing the RH1 (friends) to my RH10 - Result , i want a RH1 now!

I compared Atrac3+ 256 and MP3 (equalized on the RH10) and i thought the RH1 sounded MUCH better, clearer , crisper sound with much more precise bass, the HD amp makes a BIG difference imo.

Mp3 playback is fantastic , beter than my ipod by a long way.

The only cons i found were that i dont like the volume buttons much and the lack of track/artist info on the unit.

The pros are lithium battery that properly recharges , better sound , smaller form factor , better battery door , legacy uploads.

I am now in the market for an RH1 (and a mc40elk)!

  • 5 weeks later...

I'm looking at buying one of these as my current (rather old) MD recorder is close to dying... does the RH1 have a customisable equaliser or bass boost? (I'm looking to buy in the UK)

Yes, there are two customisable 6-band equalisers, along with 4 presets and other options. See Page 45 here: http://minidisc.amulation.com/manuals/sony...user_manual.pdf

for more details

I know what you mean about getting the RH1. It is that appealing and I have no regret of buying this recorder. I know is not perfect but what is. Regardless of what Sony do there will always be a critics that thinks their idea is lot better. Buy it and it should be the last md recorder you will ever need, unless Sony comes with a deck that offers what RH1 has. IMHO, the RH1's design is almost perfect. I know this might sound bias because I have one. But I had a chance to play with MZ-M10 but I was not completely satisfied and I'm glad that I took it back. And fortunately by the time I did return the M10, RH1 was later introduced. The first thing that caught my attention was the uploading capability of the legacy md which MZ-M10 and other previous minidisc never offer. The sound also great and the mechanism of the RH1 is less noisier,..So just buy one and start playing with it. You'll be glad you bought it...good luck!!!

Thanks! I bought the MZ-RH10 last year, but it only had presets which had no bass on any of them, so I took it back  Looks like I'll be buying an RH1 when my local Sony shop has the back in stock...

Dynamic Normalizer works well too, which levels the recording close from each other. It actually works. I never really care for eq but at least is available.

I wouldn't rush out to buy one if you weren't satisfied with the RH10, as the presets on the RH1 are pretty similar. I don't understand what you mean by "had no bass on any of them". Did you try the two customisable settings? I'm able to get a wide range of sounds by using these to suit individual ear/head phones, and I'm definitely able to increase the dominance of the lower ranges.

just wanted to share a little, but it takes forever, i mean like forever to get that perfect equalizer setting, when you thought you got it, you just came up with another setting.

oh anyways go for it! you won't regret it, although the new Sony flash players are quite appealing...

The RH10 indeed DOES have two custom equalizers which are, however, deactivated in the firmware of the European model for whatever reason. But that can easily be changed by selecting the appropriate setting in the Service Mode menu. So you where rash returning your RH10. :(

The RH-10 that I had didn't have two customisable settings, just presets like 'jazz' and 'pop'.

I only found this forum after I'd returned it... I had no idea that it could be changed :(
