Question about the RH1 display

OK, I'm confuzzled.

Can you or can't you view track info on the RH1...without the use of a remote?

If it doesn't display, then how does one find a a particular track for playback?

I do only light recording, and use my MD's for playback mostly... so this is a very important feature. I don't care if the track info is displayed during the actual playback... but I'm perplexed as to how you search for a particular tune on a disc.

TIA!

I have this thought: as it would probably have been easy for the Sony engineers to enable track info display on the main unit, would they have done this do encourage sales of the indispensable remote when this one goes faulty, broken, stolen or lost?! The big corporations really make the money on expensive accessories...

I read a thread talking about Sony's apparent interest last year in releasing 2 Hi-MD units in 2006 instead of just one. Dunno if it's true, but if it is, chances are the other model had some much-needed differentiation from the MZ-RH1. Probably LCD instead of glowy. Possibly with a more detailed display, too.

comspec,

the RM-MC40ELK remote will make life much easier with the MZ-RH1.

I'm not a bit fan of the remotes' myself. I can understand they are on a big unit like a Hard Drive DAP like a X5 or an iPod. But the MD are small enough in themselves. The other thing that annoys me is the length of the cables. They are simply too long! Short cabled earphones are too short as the remote is too heavy and its weight drag the earphones down.

Hence why I'd like to get a RH1 but won't be. I wouldn't use it as a player and I don't do enough recording to warrant one unless my NH700 breaks.

Obviously weight is a problem if you need to clip it to something. I disagree about the cable length.

Not necessarily. I clip the remotes to a pocket, to the middle of my shirt...whatever, for the convenience of not having the remote "fly around" or easily get hooked onto something else. And just generally not dangling about when moving.

I do this with the LCD-less MZ-NH700 remote, too (RM-MC21). It's definitely not heavy, but clips are always handy. Sure, the bigger remotes can be weighty. But again, not really an issue when clipped.

I find cable lengths pretty ideal. Obviously there needs to be some slack to sell to taller customers and fit different placement configurations (in a pocket, on a belt clip, on a bag, etc).

Dunno if I can agree with MD units themselves being small enough to be operated without a remote. Remotes are highly useful to any unit that can't be wrapped around your neck easily, I reckon. I'm amused when I see people carrying their ipods in their hands while jogging, for instance. Or simply to just change a track on their nano or whatever. Especially to see that in 2007 on supposedly high-tech products. I couldn't live with it unless I were sitting stationary on public transport, and even then it would be a bit of a pain...

I'm going to have to agree with the others on disliking remotes.

I've tried to make myself like them... I've spent the last 4 days running the remote with my NH900 and even my RH10 (I still can't decide which of them I like the best). I just can't get around how cumbersome all that "wire" feels. Fickle? Maybe... but I can't imagine that it would have been a big leap to include the track info on the display of the RH1.

Unfortunately, this is probably going to keep me from buying an RH1... at least for right now. Too bad... I had almost talked myself into parting with the $$.

Thanks for the input. I'd welcome some advice on how to deal with the "wire".

I'm going to have to agree with the others on disliking remotes.

For sitting-at-the-desk purposes, I would agree. For playback while moving, I disagree.

A good on-unit display always goes a long way to unit usefulness, though.

Three things that bother me about the MZ-RH1:

*longevity of glowy display (if previous model is anything to go by...)

*reliability of upping the maximum RPMs the disc spins at (a couple of posts here saying recordings weren't saved)

*rudimentary on-unit display

Whats wrong with the wire the remote has? Doesn't your headphones have wires? And replacing the remote instead of the unit itself is a way better solution. I don't think they are trying to improve their sales on remotes. As for why the RH1 doesn't display title information I am just dumbfounded.

  • 2 weeks later...

Firstly I would like to say hello to all the members, as this is my first post, although I keep reading this forum for quite a long time.

Now, getting back to the topic: I will also probably stop myself from buying RH1, because of lack of the information about the tracks on main unit's display. I really dislike using remotes, mainly because I pretty hate internal headphones. I do enjoy my Sennheiser PX200, and together with it's one and a half meter cable, all the way from the main unit to the headphones would last for 2 meters I suppose, and that's too much for me. I would feel like all wrapped in cables. I do regret it, cause RH1 is so different and so much better from the last few models...

Well, I think I'll have to wait until Sony releases next one, and hope that it's drawbacks will be more acceptable for me(as it will have some for sure).

I suggest that you buy the RH1 anyways, nobody is sure that there will be another unit, even though we all hope there would be. Something like this shouldn't affect your decision, I'm sure you could get used to it, my headphone's cables alone are 3 metres.

Maybe You're right :P I have noticed that the longer I think about this RH1 unit, the more I like the idea of buying it. But still I leave myself some time to think it out.
