Ascariss
Why afraid?I've used it on a few occasions and had no problems, and my brother uses it all the time fro ebay auctions and buying stuff off websites, so far we both had no problems or concerns with paypal. Richard_p
That's obviously just a scare-page, i'd take it with apinch of salt. I've recently begun using paypal and have had no problems in around 15 transactions. My brother has been using it for years and all is well.I believe paypal works by keeping your bank details to themselves, and first withdraws money from your bank account and then put's it into the Paypal account of the person you were dealing with. This is much safer as it means you only need give your details to one large company (whgo i'm sure could be sued in-case of any wrong doing) rather loads of random individuals who may be hard to track down if they ripped you off. MDX-400
Also another website for you:http://www.paypalsucks.comA lot of interesting reading. I've been using PayPal for a number of years now and have never had a problem. But just because I haven't doesn't mean that a lot of people haven't as well. There are certainly a good number of people that have had problems with the service ranging from minor problems to very significant money losses. Not to scare you, but you should at least know there are dangers--don't just assume "it's safe" without knowing as much as you can about PayPal, the way it works and the pitfalls that may occur and what you can do to prevent such things from occuring...That's obviously just a scare-page, i'd take it with apinch of salt. I've recently begun using paypal and have had no problems in around 15 transactions. My brother has been using it for years and all is well.As for this ^ ... You've got to be kidding me right??? You've done just fifteen transactions with PayPal and assume people that say things can go wrong with it, are simply using scare tactics? LOL. You are joking right??? I've done probably around 100 PayPal transactions and, as I mentioned, I've never had any problems. Still I'm not going to say there aren't problems to be had with PayPal. There definitely are, and usually the way people find out about it is by being overly confident in PayPal, much like what it seems you are doing. I'm not saying "PayPal is bad"; or "don't use PayPal" but I'm saying don't think you're perfectly safe when that isn't entirely true. Richard_p
Well, o.k Perhpas i am being somewhat naive, but remember i did mention that my brother has had n o problems in the time he has been using it, (over 200 judging soley by his Ebay Feedback).I suppose by all means the individual should take on baord what the 'scare pages' (as i call them) warn of, but i really doubt it's worth letting them discourage you from using paypal. micknkeef
I've had hundreds of transactions using PayPal and while there are ups and downs with it, just like everything else, I use it for the convenience. I just sold 30 DVDs on eBay last week and I always require PayPal only payments within 1 day of the auction ending. It helps get the transaction over with quickly and when trying to sort out 30 shipments in 1 or 2 days, having PayPal linked to your eBay account really helps out.I only have two complaints myself. They used to only take the 2.9% but recently added a 30 cents per transaction fee which took an additional $9 out of my DVD auctions. Sucks but again, the convenience factor makes it tolerable I guess. The only real problem I had with them was a few years ago when I bought something from Taiwan. It was advertised as new and sealed and when it arrived, it was open and obivously used. Their policy might have changed since then but at the time, PayPal only wanted to step in if you actually didn't receive the item. If it arrived and was damaged or misrepresented, then that was something to be taken up with shipping or eBay. They refused to do anything and eBay also couldn't help me out other than advising me to try and work it out via email, which is hard to do when the seller ignores you. Not a big deal on a $15 item but still, the fact that the seller got away with it bothered me more than anything. That is the only complaint I really have about them. Again, convenience, convenience, convenience. I have over 500 transactions on eBay and before I hooked up with PayPal, I had to wait for checks and money orders which was always amusing. It helps get the transaction over with quickly and when trying to sort out 30 shipments in 1 or 2 days, having PayPal linked to your eBay account really helps out. It's always good to receive fast payments, yes; and, most good buyers will pay within a day... But you do know under eBay (US) rules you can't actually "require" payment within a day, right? Buyer has at least 7 days to pay for an item, regardless of what you say in an auction. Just try to file an unpaid item/NPB for an auction won and not paid before that, and you'll see--you can't do it until 7 days have passed at least. (There are a couple exceptions, but barring those, you can't state in the auction payment "must be made within 1 day" and have it actually be enforceable/effective.) The only way you can be guaranteed immediate payment is to use a BuyItNow with the immediate payment feature (meaning the buyer essentially has to pay before they can even use the BuyItNow feature). The only real problem I had with them was a few years ago when I bought something from Taiwan. It was advertised as new and sealed and when it arrived, it was open and obivously used. Not a big deal on a $15 item but still, the fact that the seller got away with it bothered me more than anything.Well this has changed in a sense... Since PayPal was taken over by eBay, PayPal insurance on eBay purchased items is actually over and above standard eBay ($200) purchase insurance (I think PayPal insures up to $1000 now on eBay purchases). Back then, however, you would have had to go through eBay insurance; but it wouldn't matter either way because there is a $25 claim deductible so a $15 item wouldn't be covered no matter what you do (and shipping isn't covered at all, just the item price). That is the only complaint I really have about them. Again, convenience, convenience, convenience. I have over 500 transactions on eBay and before I hooked up with PayPal, I had to wait for checks and money orders which was always amusing.Indeed, getting payments quickly is always good. With PayPal of course you pay for it, but that's to be expected. Some complain about their fees being too high but there aren't many alternatives and none as popular or widely used. PayPal and eBay alike eBay are fairly indispensible services despite what they charge. From a business standpoint, it was pretty much a no-brainer for eBay to buyout PayPal like they did a few years ago.

Richard_p
Like, i think, all insurance policies, this is known as an excess charge. It is to prevent the system from being abused. General thought is that $25 'won't be missed' of course this is very subjective depending on the circumstances of the buyer. However you are right, if low costitems are bought then it is too easy for sellers to get away with ripping people off as a claim may cost more than the buyer wil get back. thus meaning the seller has nothing to fear but the occcasional negative feedback, which is barely noticeable with powerseleers haing in excess of 1000 ratings. If a $200 item is bought, but the buyer is ripped off i am sure they would be 'happy' to pay the excess, as that reduces the loss significantly.
