Gizmodo, macnn, and ATRACLife are reporting that two hard-drive based mini component hi-fi systems, the M75HD and M95HD, will be released Oct. and Nov. in Japan, and will cost US$700 and US$1058, and have storage capacities of 80GB and 250GB, respectively. They will support MD and its ATRAC format (though not Hi-MD, only SP, LP and LP4). Thanks to Dr. Phil W for this tip!

So why does the last-but-one photo on AtracLife's page show a Hi-MD disc in the MD module?

You didn't look carefully: it's blue but it's 74 min MD...

Sony is insane! they spent lot of research and developpement with Hi-MD , and doesn't implement it in they new units!! :fool:

When you think himd unit can play and record in SP/mdlp modes, it's really a piece of nonsense !§*?§%??!! I think S as Sony, as Suicide...

I don't understand why Sony is doing this ? All connect web sights are closing by march 2008

and the compression format is moving from ATRAC to an ' open windows format ' This announcement can be viewed in the FQ section of the connect web site.

Question and answer section from connect music store

When is the store closing?

Specific timing will vary by region depending on market demand, but it will not be before March 2008. CONNECT customers will be informed of relevant details in advance.

Why is the store closing?

We are moving to the open Windows Media platform in North America. In line with that, Sony will phase out the CONNECT™ Music Service in the U.S. and Canada. Specific timing will depend on market demand, but will not be before March 2008. To be clear, the CONNECT eBook service for the Reader will not be affected.

What will happen to my library (content I own)?

Customers’ existing SonicStage music libraries are not at risk, but we recommend that customers archive their music libraries to audio CDs.

What about all the music I ripped from my CD collection?

Even after the store closes you will continue to be able to play, manage, and transfer the music in your SonicStage library and on your existing ATRAC devices. We will also provide a tool to allow you to convert any non-DRM music you imported (ripped) into SonicStage into MP3 format. This tool is available now at Sony Walkman Support. Note: Please read entire page of instructions before downloading.

What if I have problems after the store closes?

You will be able to download the latest version of SonicStage and have contact with CONNECT Support through at least March 2008. CONNECT customers will be informed of relevant details, including future support options. Support will also be available by visiting CONNECT Support and clicking on "Email Customer Support."

What will happen to any devices (music players) I currently own?

Even after the store closes you will continue to be able to play, manage, and transfer the music in your SonicStage library and on your existing ATRAC devices. Customers’ existing music libraries are not at risk, but we recommend that customers archive their music libraries to audio CDs.

What about any promotional credits I currently have?

We recommend that you redeem any unused codes before March 2008 so they do not go to waste. Promotional codes have no monetary value as per our Terms and Conditions. Click here to find out how to check and see if you have any credits in your account.

Will I be able to download music I paid for if I get a new computer?

You will be able to download any music you purchased from CONNECT via your Account section until at least March 2008. We recommend that customers archive their music libraries to audio CDs.

Will I still be able to transfer content to my device(s)?

Even after the store closes you will continue to be able to play, manage, and transfer the music in your SonicStage library and on your existing ATRAC devices. You may also transfer new music you may have bought online from an increasing number of DRM-free music retailers offering compatible formats, such as MP3.

Will Connect continue to add new songs to the store?

At some point we will stop adding new music to the store, but timing is still to be determined.

How will customers be informed of relevant details regarding the status of the music store?

Registered users will receive the information via the email address they have provided. Information will also be posted on the CONNECT Music Store and on the Sony Electronics customer service site.

Not sure exactly how the CONNECT service works, but I see only the two services, MORA and PLAYLOG on my jp ver of SonicStage.

They seem pretty healthy and haven't heard anything of closing.

They're probably just cutting support for everyone else besides japan. Which pretty much explains why these netjukes are japan-exclusive.

I was actually thinking of getting one of the 80gb netjukes while I was in japan just recently and if it wasn't for the 70,000yen price tag.... though i got a ps3 instead ;)

I have this exact same thing, it's called a computer.

That sums up my feelings pretty good.

Sony's a crazy company. They keep diluting the market with cool gadgets instead of trying to make a big splash with something important. Every time apple makes a new product, it creates a stir around the world. Sony, with all their brilliant and cool inventions, continue to implement them in equipment that always seems to fall short.

I don't think it would be fair to compare it to a computer, they have different purposes. And I would rather have those micro systems over a computer any day. Those things are special, a computer is just well a computer. However I don't understand why Sony didn't bother to include Hi-MD support. Lately they have been making some exceptionally stupid decisions. ie the new 40GB PS3 not supporting backwards compatibility....
