Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this site and so hope I have posted this in the correct place.

I would like and MD player for my car but I'd like one with 3.5mm jack so I can plug my ip*d in too (shhh! don't tell anyone!)

I'm hoping to rekindle my love for MD as all of my discs have been sat in a box for a couple of years. Can anyone recommend a good quality head unit, with 3.5mm jack input, for my car, pref with a double phono input at the back so I can hook my subwoofer up to it too.

Failing that I would try and get a CD head unit and buy a portable MD to plug in. I was thinking about a sony MZ-R50 which I have read is pretty good despite it's relative age...any other units that anyone could recommend?

I've also had a look at a SONY MZ-NH700 HI-MD...will I be able to play normal MDs on that too, is it worth the cash?

FInally, I'd greatly appreciate any tips on transfering normal MD data onto my computer (Vista system...grrr). It's a laptop and only has a mic input so I was thinking of getting a Behringer UCA202 U-Control USB Audio Interface but I'd rather have one with an optical in AND out. I have a seperate MD deck for my hifi so just need some tips on the best way to connect it to my PC.

So many questions, such little time!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Any HI-MD unit will play (and most will record) old-style MDs. To upload old-style MDs, though, you need the RH1. It's the only unit that can do it. Where are you located? I may be able to help if you send me your discs, I upload them to my computer and send you the discs plus the uploaded files back, minus the DRM.

Most decent car radios today have an AUX input on the front panel - just plug your MD into the radio AUX in (you can either use LINE OUT or normal OUT from the MD. Line in is better.

Radios often have a USB port as well -- unfortunately this is not compatable with MD (even on Sony car radios) !!!. The USB will work fine for other types of Music players.

You can still find some older Kenwood radios on Ebay etc -- but these will only play Net MD (no Hi-MD). and don't have an AUDIO in (or at least not one that you can access without a bit of fiddly work).

Radio waith AUX in is your best bet.

Cheers

I wonder how the sound quality is if you plug it in? Will it be same as playing from a regular in dash MD player?

Cool,

Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks for the offer but I live in London! Think it might cost a fair bit to send all my MDs to you and I don't think I trust the postal system with my beloved recordings. Thanks again.

Suggest you get an MDX-66XLP changer (look in the equipment browser) and pair it up with any Sony head unit in the car.

I'm not sure about the input but since the input to the Sony from the changer is 2xRCA phono plug, you could probably rig something up quite easily to switch the source (3.5mm jack to dual RCA is a $5 cable).

There are also kits to make either a PC or conceivably an MD portable look like a changer. The latter I am not sure about.

If you don't buy a Sony head unit, then you will end up (as I did) buying an RF modulator. The ones Sony makes are quite good.

I am not sure where you are located but I have a car mini disk player and it can play long play minis as well as short play. It can be rigged when installing to play your Ipod.

I have spotted several "double din" Japanese domestic market MD players for cars on eBay which have obviously come over in Japanese cars of some kind. As MD is not that popular in the UK, people remove these as soon as the cars come over and get rid of them on eBay.

I have noticed that some of the "double din" ones have a 3.5mm jack input on the front as well as some of them having a CD player slot as well as a minidisc slot.

These units are by Addzest (Clarion), Kenwood, Alpine etc. Never seen a Sony one with a 3.5mm input.

Remember if you buy a Japanese car unit you won't be able to receive the full range of UK FM stations unless you fit a band expander device (which don't cost much anyway).

Go to WWW.MINIDISC.ORG and browse equipment. Look at AUTOMOBILE section and check for any with 3.5mm inputs on the front.
