Yet another post... Deck Suggestions?

I just bought another 30 80 min discs off amazon... A little pricey(total of 54 bucks), but they're sony and brand new. I just have this fetish about liking brand new. So far, I have 20 80 minute discs, plus 1 that came with the dn430, plus the 4 coming with the new 707 unit, and another 30 coming next week from amazon. I'm thinking this might be enough. To complete my stock, I'm considering adding a minidisc deck that will play my mdlp discs. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I'd like it to be a nicer unit, with scrolling titles, group names, optical in and out. This will likely be my last major purchase for a long time. And by the way, what is up with ebay people charging an arm and a leg for new in the box hi-md units? 249? 275? Prices like this just tell me to never think too seriously about hi-md. It seems all the good equipment got snapped up by resellers who refuse to even consider lowering thier price. I emailed one of these and just said that you are killing the market for these machines, that people who might switch or are curious will never purchase at inflated prices, and that they eventually will have to sell at a lower price or eat the cost. I'm sure someone will, but new mdlp portables are fairly available and at a reasonable price.(rant over)

I like my JE-640. It doesn't give me those annoying "trprotect" messages when I try to work with stuff from SonicStage. Later decks do.

The creme de la creme is a JB980 if you can find it, since it does Type-S, the 640 does not - so I don't use for playback through stereo.

Muchos denarios is the Onkyo line which plays and records HiMD too. But likely new, and likely in the $400+ range. There are NO Sony decks available new except what you can buy in Japan at auction.

Another option is a CD-MD combo deck (discussed already)

Another option is to be a true blue audiophile and forget about LP2 for deck. Then there are LOTS of choices and almost anything will do. You may want a pre-MDLP combo (to go quickly from CD to MD) and/or an optical sound card (to go x1 from whatever deck optical out to puter), but you might have said you have one of those. Yeah, try to get a deck that has opti-out.

I can see you have got the bug :) HNY

For a deck I'd suggest the MDS-JB980, if you can get one, or the slightly lower spec MDS-JE780. Mine's been going over 6 years and is an absolute work-horse, and great sounding too. You'll want the ATRAC Type-S for playing your MDLP discs - older and non-Sony MDLP decks don't have Type-S and the difference is noticeable through a good home setup.

I suppose the prices are as new/unused units are getting scarcer, and Hi-MD customers are a captive market. Sadly there may be few completely new users, though a few do seem to pop up here!
