Editing tracks with a JB940

Sorry for the multiple new topics - but I just got the JB940 and so am reacquainting myself with MD after not having a recorder for over 14 years.

I used to just have an R30, so obviously this deck is much more advanced.

However, I'm really struggling to edit tracks. I can't remember how I used to do it on my portable, but I swear it wasn't this complicated, meaning I feel like I'm missing something.

If i record a song from vinyl, I used to start the recording just before the needle drops, and stop it after the song's finished, knowing I can edit it afterwards. I don't remember exactly how I used to do it - but I recall I simply listened for the moment the song started, and a fraction of a moment before I'd hit a track marker insert. the same goes for the end. Then I'd just delete the extra two tracks I'd have created.

With the JB940 - it seems much more complicated. I think I can do it two ways - either using divide, or A-B delete - but both seem really finicky.

Is there no way to do it my old way of just listening back to the song, and hitting one button to insert a track mark?

You can certainly press the record button again as it goes along whilst recording. The other way which SHOULD work (but nobody has actually confirmed) is to use M-Crew and do the whole thing remotely. Unconfirmed because the specs mention M-Crew and PCLK-MN10, but I don't think anyone with a 940 ever reported it working. This feature would make it the only model to support both keyboard and pclk, as far as I recollect.

I tried various methods (and understand the exact problem you refer to) over the years. The portables are better at putting in track marks, the decks are better at precise editing, and the bookshelves (like the PX3), through M-Crew, offer a combination of editing features which is better than either.

Problems:

1. PCLK-MN10 (or 20) is hard to find and expensive

2. M-Crew won't run properly on Windows 7.

You could mark them with a portable and then fine-tune the edit with your deck. One advantage of this is that you can use headphones whilst editing - saves wear and tear on your co-dwellers. Or buy an RH1, upload the WHOLE RECORDING via USB, then divide the tracks with Sound Forge (what I do), as well as removing noise from the recording as you go.

Hope this helps

Stephen

Hi

why not just use the "divide" to cut tracks? That´s not a big deal as you can edit this in very small steps with the jog lever on the Deck or remote.

The whole PCLK thing is hard to find and expensive.

All you have to do is divide and delete the other tracks.I miss the track mark button by myself but if you first got into the Decks features it is an easy thing.

I hope this helps out a bit

Yeah, I just find the divide thing finicky too - I think my jog wheel is a bit temperamental (it sometimes doesn't register a 'click', and other times might jump multiple steps. So hopefully when I get the right remote (see other thread), it will be much easier.

I just use divide myself manually after i have recorded vinyl.

The 940 is better quality than your portable so i would stick to recording with that assuming your source is up to it.

The 980 has slightly better editing features where you can set divide a track and fast forward/rewind skipping if you miss the point.

With the 940 you have to come out of divide and skip back. (less convienient)

You can use a ps2 keyboard to divide if you havent picked up a big remote yet.

I've left my headphones at work over the weekend, so will see if I can get into the divide feature once I bring them home. I'm sure it can't be that hard but is made more troublesome for me thanks to the sticking AMS wheel.

I've spent the weekend experimenting with how best to record playlists from my computer (in the absence of NetMD or anyway to transfer other than actually recording), and I've settled on actually inserting an mp3 of a minute's silence between each song. I don't know if it's a common feature, but the JB940 detects silence, and once it's broken, uses something called Smart Space to delete it and replace it with 3 seconds of its own, and starting a new track once music commences. I tried using mp3s of 3 and 5 seconds, but it didn't seem reliable enough and it would still record songs as one.

I know this is all old news, but I'm just figuring it out all over again.
