On a serious note (NW-A805)

Question

 I am so impressed with the NW-A805 that I am afraid to take it out of the house. Sad, I know but this device is so expertly put together that it would be a shame to get even the tiniest mark on it. As for the idea of ever dropping it, don't go there.Even my wife (who thinks I have a problem )has commented on how impressive this little gadget looks and sounds.

Which leads me to my point. I have searched the 'net and the high street for a leather case for the NW-A80* and so far I have failed to locate one. I read on some of the threads here that some people have purchased a case, I would be grateful if someone would let me know where to locate one and at what price.

It's time to cut the grass, I'll have take the NW-S703 I think.

Anthony, join the club! Most of us have the same problem. As for the wife, mine thinks I'm a bloody nutter with the precious things-(multiple walkman units). As for cases, the Sony Centres do a few both leather and skins for the NW-A8xx. Do you have a local Sony Centre? I think they should open a support group for us walkman freaks, Walkman's Annonymous maybe?

I agree completely... I am so impressed with my A808 which I bought last weekend. It's gorgeous.

Right after I'd bought it (from a Sony Centre) I went back to get a case. They had three on offer: silicon skins (two in a pack) for £19.99, a leather one at £19.99 and a hard, clear plastic shell for £17.99. I went with the shell and I have to say it's just perfect. It protects everything, including screen, and has its own sealed buttons which push down on the unit's buttons. It's an absolute perfect fit and I'd recommend it without hesitation.

Jrome, you definitely not nuts. Overly protective like me, definitely. The NW-A800 is very durable, with the metal casing and glass screen. I have used different methods to protect my gadgets over the past. Anyways, I would like to welcome you to the club.

Jrhughes, I bought the leather case and two screen protectors with my NW-A808. More because it hides the NW-A800 better. However, the unit seems to slide around in the case which can make operations difficult at first. Does, the plastic shell have a opening for the hold switch?

do the silicon cases protect the screen as well?

Jrome, The material that is used from the silicon case is not transparent, so unlike the plastic case there is an opening where the screen is suppose to be. The Sony branded silicon case here comes with one or two screen protectors. The screen protector is a must, based on my opinion not matter which case purchased.

I brought the 806 yesterday, from a Sony Centre, in West End London. The only case they had was a spiderman one. I too am waiting for the clear case, but not sure that this will be the best option. If you have A Sony Centre near you, that's the place to go.

Shinji, yes, the plastic shell does have an opening for the hold switch.

I almost went for the leather case, but decided on the shell because I wanted the player to remain very small and sleek and to have full protection. I have to say that this case is better than I was thinking it would be. The fit is absolutely perfect and the way the buttons work is such a good idea.

The opening for the hold switch is bevelled and is completely flush to the back of the player, so dust will have a hard time getting in. This is no cheap-looking plastic shell: it's quality stuff.

:) I contacted my local Sony Centre ( Cork,Ireland) today. They will have a range of accessories for the NW-A80* series delivered next week. I am told there are three different types of case due in.

Don't feel too awkward because I felt the same way about my player and I'm sure I can help you....please consider this jacket by DLO...I bought one two weeks ago and it is THE BEST player protector out there and yes it does cover the screen while allowing you access to all parts of the player.....and it fits the A series PERFECTLY....you won't regret it....a little trick I even use to clean both my player and the jacket if it should get fuzz is removing it with some regular tape..ha!..please consider this again!

Just bought an A808 and I have to admit; this thing is extremely cute.

But that's not gonna help him; I'll only use it for music so I don't mind little scratches on the screen, so, it's gonna life in a pocket, slone and unprotected. Bwuhahaha!

I had purchased the case and NW-S706 within a couple days. I notice a scratch on the screen about a month after purchasing the case  . I suspect that the scratch occurred when I placed the case on, since there is a large screen on the inside of the case. The scratch on the NW-S706 is unnoticeable :D , but stands out because of the larger scratch on the case.

The NW-A808 is extremely thin, and light. What Samsung model are you talking about aob9. It has been reported that the Samsung is slightly bigger than the NW-A800, but I can not find the review with those pictures.

Hi! I've a few questions:

Can the A800 or S700 series players playback mp3 or u have to convert them to atrac format?

What is the better buy: A806 or S706?

I'm going to U.K. this summer in july, how much do these players cost in the U.K.?

To answer your questions:

Both the A800 series, and the s700 series can play MP3s.

As I haven't listened to the S700 series I can't say which is the better, depends what you want. You can listen to both when you come over to the UK.

The a800 series starts at 119 GBP( 2 GB) 144 (4GB) and I think 179 (8GB) Not sure about the s700 series.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

All Sony players play MP3s natively - no conversion required.

As to what's the better buy, that probably depends on your needs and what price you can get them at. If you won't use video at all and would value built-in noise cancelling, the s700 series might be better for you. However, from all the hubbub here about the a800 series, it seems that there's just something 'cool' about the design and interface which, let's face it, is often half the fun when it comes to buying a new gadget. Don't quote me on this, but it also feels like Sony are actually supporting the a800 with a full range of accessories etc. - perhaps it's best in the long run?

I think you should read reviews and then, when you're in the UK, go to a shop and play around with both and see which one you like best.

Do you think higher capacity players like this will be released? 8GB is a big step down from my 20GB Walkman, and is very low considering the iPod Video has 80GB, which is also a flash player :s I love Walkman's, but when you have an iPod Video right there with 80gb for around the same price, it's difficult to choose which I'd prefer, quality over quantity!

Both the NW-A806 and NW-S706 support AAC, WMA and MP3 formats natively. The supplied software only transcode to ATRAC format.

The NW-A806 and NW-S706 are both excellent units, but work different. The major advantages of the NW-S700 series is built-in noise cancellation using the supplied headphones. The major advantage of the NW-A806 is 2" colour screen, which give you access to more detailed information. The form factor of both device are different.

What would be your primary purpose for the DAP?

Most members believe that Sony will release a higher capacity hard drive to compete which other players in that category such as the Video iPods. The largest capacity flash drive players are 8GB, but some ingenious people have replace the hard drive in iPods with flash drives. The best suggestion is to wait, and see what Sony releases over the next months.

And memory prices are falling rapidly, I can buy 2Gb flashcards nowadays for under €15, that costed >100,- 1.5 years ago, so no doubt available DAP-memory size will double at least once a year.

I make do with a 8Gb 8xx, but no doubt I'll buy a 32Gb player within 2 years, hopefully a Sony.

I wonder how many people use all 30 Gbs 0r 80gbs of their available space. When i had an ipod, I never had more than 1000 songs on their as I choose the songs I liked on a CD & ripped those onto the player, as opposed to putting my whole music collection on. Also I wasn't one who put pictures on. Besides my friends who had 1000s of songs on their Ipods had barely listened to half of them. 4 or 8 gb is enough for me.

I have a 20GB NW-HD3 which I use solely for the car. I have a 35 mile (each way ) commute daily. Once a week I bring the walkman indoors to recharge the battery and synch any new downloads via Sonicstage. To answer your question, yes, I have use for a high capacity walkman, my entire music collection is on the HD3.However, I use my S703 around town and my A805 for admiring technological advancement.

80GB iPod is not flash played, as I know 80GB flash memory doesn't exists nowadays. Anyway 4 or 8GB is absolutely enough for music.

How do these players play MP3?

By transferring the MP3 files in your library to the NW-A800 player.

There is an option for this in SonicStage?

In the transfer setting for SonicStage 4.3 by setting the 'Transfer Mode Settings' to 'Standard Transfer Mode'. Now MP3 files will be transferred as MP3 files to NW-A800.

SonicStage is a media Library manager. You have to let SonicStage know where your files are on your computer. By dragging-and-dropping files or directories into SonicStage, SonicStage will store the location of these files. SonicStage also imports CDs, and create files on your computer that can later be transfered the NW-A800 player.

SonicStage 4.3

- Download music from Connect (region that computer is connected to has a Connect store)

- Import files (either audio files or CD files)

- Transcode to ATRAC

- Manage audio files on NW-A800 and computer

- Transfer audio files between NW-A800 and computer

This works with Memory Stick's and various Network Walkmans (which include NW-A800 and NW-S600/S700 series).
