Question

i just got my black A818 at sony style...and my very first time, the player ran out of battery the next day. iono why...maybe i left it on play? im not sure...so right now im testing how long the battery will last...to see if mine is defective. it started today at 4:30pm and now it is 10:50pm and one bar has been gone.

so i have 2 questions:

1. how long does your batttery last, for those who have this player?

2. if IT is defective, will sony style give me a new one and take this one back? i bought it on November 30, 2007.

I have a NW-A806 and I listen to it moderately. My battery usually lasts me a week. Sometimes when I listen to it alot in one day, one bar would disappear sometime near the end of the day, but normally one bar would go away after 1 and a half days of moderate use. I have no clue if yours is a defect or not but if it does turn out to be one, I'm pretty sure Sony would replace or fix it for free if it is still under warranty.

My battery lasts about 20 hours, and when it gets down to one bar - it goes on for hours afterwards.

It's possible you left it on, I've done that a couple of times. But it seems you'd had the player on for over 6 hours before one bar droppped? That sounds about right.

I'm not sure how long mine lasts as I often end up adding new files (and charging it as it is connected to the computer) before the battery runs down. One thing is for sure. It runs down a lot quicker using the video part. It also depletes faster if you are using the video display when listening to Mp3s (you don't have the screen saver on).

You may need to "condition" it. Let the battery run down completely then recharge completely. Do this a few times then use it "normally" and see how long it lasts.

If it is a lithium ion battery you DO NOT want to condition it. These batteries do not like being run down to nothing as you will reduce their service life.

I do not know what battery the NWA is, but could any-one that knows find out?

Thanks for pointing this out Clockwork. I checked the manual and under "Power source" (page 134 in my version) it states that it contains a "rechargeable lithium-ion battery".

However, in the troubleshooting section under "battery life is short" it states, "The efficiency of the battery will be improved by repeatedly charging and discharging it" (page 112).

So my suggestion of letting it run down completely is incorrect but the idea of repeatedly recharging it appears to be correct.

I have no idea how long the battery lasts in my *805. If I am not using it I have it in the cradle charging. I had to develop this habit so I always know where it is. I tend to lose things and end up doing something stupid like sitting on them. As for the LiI battery, I am glad to hear that they do not like being fully discharged, I tought I was shortening my battery life my never letting it run down beyond half way.
