allan
Hi Just bought a Nh-900 in Singapore price is US$305.00 Approx.. The NH-800 is US$280 here.. I was going to get the NH-800 with FM radio UNTIL i found out that the NH-800 radio is IN THE HAND control!!! NH-800 CANNOT record FM/AM It has a very BULKY handcontrol and a VERY HEAVY TRANSFORMER based charger. It works on 1 AA cell. Because it uses a AA cell battery compartment it is very bulky and UGLY. NH-900 Works on flat NIHM and comes with AA cell adaptor, Charging Cradle It also has very light 100-200 volt Switching power supply. Both are made in Malaysia. The NH-800 looks very ugly with a very rough large handcontrol because of the radio and NO cradle. I would not mind living with the large radio but since it could NOT record radio programs, I decided to give it a miss. NH-900 is a very good buy with good feature list. However the finishing is not expected of such a high priced device.. looks like a plastic toy. Anyway bottom line is the electronics and runtime. I record nature sounds and this is my main purpose. blazer78
can anyone that actually owns a nhf800 confirm that the remote supplied with the nhf800 has a backlight?
DrZhivago
can anyone that actually owns a nhf800 confirm that the remote supplied with the nhf800 has a backlight? I don't own nh800,but I can confirm that it doesn't have a backlight.

jadeclaw
The manual doesn't mention backlight at all. So, went Sony into stupidity overkill mode now and produces even more different versions now??? Or where is sup8's recorder coming from? crazeybt1
remotes with display and no lights nowadays just doesn't make "sense"
Christopher
That's very odd. I've never heard of regional backlit/non-backlit differences..
sup8
I think the name was Hype Audio. I got it for $236, but they charged me $20 for shipping.
blazer78
hmm.. yeah, i was also under the impression that the nhf800's don't come with a backlight.. otherwise they would stress in their specifications list a "backlit" lcd remote with tuner functions hehe. so now i guess i'll have to take one step up and get the nh900 just for the backlit remote... =(
Cadevil5
so now i guess i'll have to take one step up and get the nh900 just for the backlit remote... =(Other reasons for the step up: Sony's Digital Amp (I think that thing adds amazing sound) Better aesthetics (jog dial's cool, no big battery hump) Charging Cradle The NH900 is pretty sweet... blazer78
and the half plastic/alloy construction hehe
Ppk3000
and the half plastic/alloy construction hehe :laugh:Both halves of the NH900's construction looks pretty similar through an average glance. The NH1's harder magnesium shell might serve well against being pancaked, but both the NH1's and NH900's internals are going to break in any serious freefall accidents... and we know it's the "guts" that matter the most in the end

blazer78
yeah, pics are proof enough for me.. btw about the nh-700's they don't appear to have a VPT accoustic engine, now i want to know whether that makes music sound a lot better or is it just a minor feature? i could save 200 AUD here and get a non-backlit remote =) otherwise, its nh900 for me
KJ_Palmer
I never use the VPT at all, it just seems to distort the music badly, and to me seems very unpleasant indeed. Some people, of course might like that. On the other hand the digital amp on the NH900 is very nice to listen to (well IMO ) . skyther
If I were stuck with a choice between the 2, I'd opt for the NH900. The NH700 is uber plasticky, sure as hell ain't worth the AUD499 it's being sold for.
Cadevil5
The digital amp makes the 900 worth it...great sound
minidisco.com
Our NHF800 remote does not have a backlight. Sony certainly has confused the matter by posting pictures of the unit with a backlit remote. Perhaps this is a regional difference (UK model?) In any case, if you buy the US model, do NOT expect a backlit remote. -Matt

The photos of the NF520D (netmd downloader) also show the RM-MC34LT remote as being backlit, but it's not. I know for a fact; I've owned this unit (bought it for my best friend). What's odd is while the pictures show a backlight, the description text at SonyStyle does not mention one... but on units with a backlit remote, it does state that the remote is backlit. Smells like subtle false advertisement to me.
Christopher
Indeed. I've even called Sony about the NF520D business and they said that it had a backlit remote! :whatever:

The Rule
Personally i'd go with the 900...the 700 is too plain for my tastes.
