It's the mode where you can play with your unit internal settings (laser power, aligment, power tweaks, etc...) which is saved in the eeprom and since all units of the same series feature the same chipset, functions are desabled via software mode

OMG, don't people read before posting??? Type-R is no way related to ATRAC3! Type-R is the newest version (4.5+?) of ATRAC (SP) encoding And Type-S is only active when playing back LP2/4 tracks, NOT when recording
