  1. Could go either way... Although I cannot see Sony liking the idea of being bed-mates with one of it's biggest portable competitors.
  2. No offense, but it seems just a tiny bit foolish to just have Diner's club. Other than sifting through the vastness of the internet looking for a retailer that accepts DCI I would apply for a Visa or MC and transfer money from your DCI to the new Credit Card. Well I guess if you can do that...... I just turned 18 and I'm on way to my 1st credit card ever.
  3. -Student -Listener of music -Pretends to try and make music -Own/operate a Blog -Hopefully will be a Radio DJ come fall -lives independant of my parents -works at a nightclub, but hates the music -enjoys staying up really really late (it's 6:15 am) -strikes out with the girls
  4. Wow, slick thinking. To bad you have to transcode it, but then again, it's hard to pick up on the sublety of compression while driving.
  5. Airport Express. The 2 words are were like a faint symphony in my ears until today. I will now let you all in on the wonderment that is wireless networking. So today I got my ADSL hooked up in my new pad, and so I decided to call the computer department at London Drugs to see if they had my Airport Express base station ready, and they kind of did. So I get to the store and ask them for my basestation and the lady pulls out this regular airport base station and tells me that I cannot buy it because she ordered it for her own customer. (I was going to let her sell me an airport extreme base station at the price quoted on my order (170 CAD instead of 299 CAD)). So disapointed that I wouldn't be able to surf wirelessly for another day or two, I decided to look at the iPods and the collection of G4 iMacs (complete with out-dated copies of OSX!). Just when I was about to leave the store the sales-lady comes up to me and says "Is this what you ordered?" and so I walked out 200 dollars poorer and much happier than when I left. Now for the real impressions: Size/ergonomics/style: This thing is little, pretty and extremely easy to work with. Plug into the wall, plug the lan cable in and it practically disapears from sight. The all white blends in with the wall-socket so I don't have to look at another ugly router. (My Linksys 4 port router is the ugliest thing in the entire world) Features: I plugged a mini-to-toslink cable into the audio out of the base station, set my iTunes to play in my bedroom and hit play. I haven't attempted to listen to the music, but there was infact a red-light coming from the end of the cable, ensuring that it did work. I'll need to try a few listening tests to see if the sound is at all compressed before transmission, although at 54 MB/s I'd be surprised if it needed it. As of this review I have not attempted to use the base station as a wireless printing hub. Functionality: After installing something from the CD that apple supplied with the base station, the network was no more than a hop-skip and jump away from being set-up. Not longer after that I realized that with my ISP I had to get them to register my router before I could use it. However, that surely is not Apple's fault. (Of course not, and do not call me Shirley) Overall: With WiFi making leaps and bounds in the new-age, I think we are all going to be in for a real treat in the years to come. Saying that, I really belive that the Apple Airport Express is a clear look into the not-so-distant future of WiFi.
  6. You need to think about how you are going to use your player before you just get someone to tell you what to buy. If you have a Mac for example, go with the iPod or iRiver. The iPod works seamlessly with the Mac iTunes, and the iRiver works as a mass storage drive. You can also use Hi-MD if you don't mind real-time recording. If you have a PC and alot of MP3s, the iPod, iRiver and the Creative models are all pretty good choices. With the iPod leading the pack as it has the easiest GUI and sounds great. The Creative Zen, Iriver IHP-120 and the iPod and iPod mini are all worthy contenders. The only real advantage HI-MD has is its ability to make high-quality recordings from sources other than computers, as well as it has removable media.
  7. Well, I had the gist of it down, even if most of the details were wrong. Thermal laser + Magnetic head I won't forget now.
  8. Well there is an thermal head and an optical head in the Minidisc recorder. The thermal head heats the surface of the disk and then the laser changes the Ones and zeros. One isn't doing it's job and I belive it is usually blamed on the Thermal mechanism.
  9. You may have a thermal head problem. I suggest trying to record a disc using the conventional recording method and seeing if you still cannot make a track.
  10. Groups don't act as playlists in the sense that you can have several groups with the same track.
  11. I can only answer question 1 and 3, The digital amp only pertains to listening. I belive it is a class D amp and by definition, should sound better. Although the AUVI amp that sharp makes is better, it is still an improvement. 3. Hi-MD is the coice for live recording. Digital Uploading is available for Hi-MD, whereas Net/MD doesn't have any uploading. Also, you can record using an Uncompressed format (PCM) whereas regular MD must be compressed using either SP or LP2/LP4. Hope that helps.
  12. While the MD-2070 looks like a very feature rich deck, I belive it pre-dates MDLP and isn't compatible.
  13. I beg to differ SKyther, Checking your contact list/emailing from 150 feet away on your laptop? Pretty rad methinks. Wireless for a desktop is abit silly though.
  14. I had a similar problem awhile back when I switched from Cable to ADSL. I'm not sure what PPPoE is, but you may have to call your tech support and talk to them. Or you could wait for Kurisu to reply, who is infact tech support.
  15. While I have no idea why Sony is staffed by Cacti and male genitalia. I belive there will be announcements of Sharp and other brand Hi-MD once the technology matures abit. If there is a problem with other brands, it will be that they must license the Hi-MD technology.
  16. IIRC the r700 was plastic too no? Is the h800 just poorly constructed compared to the r700? Or are you just un-impressed with the way Sony put the unit together?
  17. Justly said, although I just made assumptions about what I thought about the situation. The LP4 was just an example to pad my "shot in the dark", Since all of Sony's bitrates are meant to please the ear more than copy the original.
  18. I can't wait until the recording industry kills itself. Record industry slump eh? I bet they didn't factor in things like: Losing customers to indie labels, Losing customers to recycle/second hand/pawn shops, Losing customers due to a slumping economy, Losing customers because 90% of their music is crap. SO whatever % the RIAA claim they have lost due to piracy, we can probally take 1/4 off of that number. (Yeah, that was super biased and un-researched, but it is valid)
  19. The label does not affect or effect recording. Simply if you put a "Radiohead" label on a disc that you then re-recorded with "The Pixies" then you would have a odd disc, and the label wouldn't be too helpful
  20. I just recently turned 18! Hello bar scene!
  21. Sadly, I think the record industry thinks that this flash animation is both making Jibjab thousands of dollars and killing all of Woody Guthrie's record sales. I know I recorded it to my minidisc player and DIDN'T buy "The Best of Woody Guthrie" since listening to a parody song is the same thing.
  22. If I can remember properly, Sony's Atrac 1st point of the agenda is to make a pleasing audio-codec, second is trying to sound like the original. I.e "I belive low bit-rate mp3s are less-pleasing than LP4." Hope that answers the question.....
  23. No doubt the power from the main unit comes to the remote via the remote jack. Therefore, the radio probally wouldn't be able to be powered using a conventional MD unit. Although having an extra remote wouldn't hurt!
  24. So you are recording MD->PC? There may be a problem with the frequency of the je510 not being compatible with the freq of the sound card you are using. (Maybe Frequency is the wrong word, kHz is what I am trying to get at.) Tips: Try encoding the MP3 at some different Bit rates as well as kHz. Sorry if that doesn't help.
  25. You may have to just try it out. It will work like it should, but the life may be diminished. The way to fix this is by draining the battery, then charging, then draining it a few times till it is back to normal.
