Hints: How to Control Your Levels and Make Undistorted Recordings
raintheory replied to dex Otaku's topic in Live Recording
nice job! I like the little disclaimer at the end. But seriously, well done! Should defintely be sticky/pinned! -
Using SonicStage to transfer tracks to Hi-MD you can also record at 352kbps which is pretty good high-quality compression. 352kbps is only available via SonicStage, so you wouldn't be able to record a track via mic or line-in at that bitrate. True SP isn't available in any Hi-MD units. There is a "fake" SP (which is actually LP2 dressed like SP) for compatibility with older units. Although you can only record this way through SonicStage. I use Hi-SP personally for just about anything except for mastering (I use Hi-MD pretty recularly for my own music).

With no compression at all (i.e. PCM/WAV format) you would get probably an album and a half on a 1gb Hi-MD disc. Maybe 2 albums depending on their lengths. As far as your old recorder, the standard recording format would be SP which is ~292kbps (for contrast PCM is 1.4Mbps). Hi-MD recorders can reord in Hi-SP (~256kbps) which would basically be the quivalent of SP on your older recorder. Actually it would most likely sound better because of advancements in the ATRAC encoding. With Hi-SP you would be able to get probably 8 or so albums on a 1gb Hi-MD disc. Close to 8 hours recording time. Hope this clears things up a bit. EDIT: I thought the MZ-E20 was just a player and couldn't record.? Also, great avatar, love king crimson

Hi-MD 1gb discs can cold ~1h34min PCM uncompressed. http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html#_q93 So maybe 8 albums if they are 12min long.

I believe planet minidisc is the same as minidisco ( http://www.minidisco.com ) which I have ordered from numerous times and would highly recommend. The only difference I am aware of between the M10 and M100 is the OLED display, the M10 has LCD. The OLED display is awesome as long as you aren't in bright sunlight (can be kind of hard to see). As far as the Mic that is included with the M100, I haven't actually used that particular mic so I can't comment on it. Seems like it should work just fine though. To me it sounds like a better deal to go for the M100, unless you are fine with LCD in which case the M10 is essentially the same unit. I wish the M100 had been available for only $20 more back when I got my RH10!

If you are debating between those models the only difference is that the MZ-M100 is Mac-compatible (in regards to uploading PCM recordings). the RH10 won't work on a mac. You may want to research the upcoming RH1 though if you are working at all with a Mac, mainly because you will be able to upload Hi-SP/Hi-LP as well (not just PCM like the M100), also there is supposedly going to be software coming out that will allow transfer of tracks to the RH1 from Mac. The M100 only allows uploads, and only in PCM format. If you don't need Mac support, the RH10 would suffice, but there are additional features of the RH1 that may be worth the extra cash (soundprofessionals is taking pre-orders for the RH1 for $299). Read the specs page below, and the review posted there for more in-depth info. Hope this helps some... RH10/M100 Specs: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-M100+RH10.html RH1 Specs: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-RH1.html EDIT: Welcome to the forums by the way.

If you are referring to the NE810, which is NetMD. You are unable to hear the sounds via usb/computer, you can control the unit via sonicstage but the sound comes from the unit's headphone jack.

Try this out: http://www.macropool.com/en/download/repair_mdac.html Welcome to the forums! EDIT: What version of SonicStage are you using?

About to lie down to try to cope with a pretty severe migraine... blah.

If there isn't anything inside "C:\Program Files\Sony\SonicStage" then it is possible that the add/remove entry is keeping the reinstall from working even though SonicStage is uninstalled. If the aforementioned directory doesn't contain a bunch of files and folders: The add/Remove entry can be removed by:

Do some reading on TOC cloning here: http://www.minidisc.org/part_hacking.html To my knowlegde this is not possible with the N707, but if you know someone with any of the models discussed, you may be in luck.
-
If you remove all sources of power (AC & battery) before the TOC is re-written, then the track will not be erased. Otherwise you will have to look into TOC cloning in order to get the track back. Basically this means you would have to get a MD with one track (the entire length of the disc) in the same format you originally recorded on, and trick an MD recorder into writing that TOC onto the disc that you erased your track from.

I'm not real sure on that. I'm in the process of backing up my data and reinstalling XP as well so I guess we'll find out.

The JE470 is just a home deck, These are our Pro decks: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-E10.html http://www.minidisc.org/part_Tascam_MD-350.html The Tascam MD-350 has Balanced XLR Inputs/Outputs, both the MDS-E10 & the MD-350 have optical outs. Those features combined with the editing features, speed control, and TOC RAM editing (on the MDS-E10) were the differences between these pro decks and standard MD decks. The XLR in particular on the MD-350 we needed for good implementation into our studio. I'm actually debating selling one of the pro decks to get some cash towards the RH1, but I haven't decided which one yet. Probably the MDS-E10 because it lacks the XLR. But like you saod, they would be overkill for anyone without a studio or need for the extra features.

True... Although there may be an oddball registry entry for it that isn't in the usual places. Other than that, have you updated anything recently? OS? WMP?
-
This may be a silly question, but "Muting" isn't checked under the drop down list "Controls" is it?
-
I use my PRO Decks extensively. Selling my JE470 though.
-
Do you have system restore activated on your system? If so, you could roll-back to a restore point prior to installing sonicstage and start over. Otherwise, are you comfortable editing the registry?
-
You know I was just thinking. For the sake of the RH1 being a professional recording solution, why didn't they implement any kind of "time-machine" recording on the unit?
-
Quality-wise you would definitely want to go for a Hi-MD model, most of the mid/high-end models have line/optical input as well as Mic-input, and can record in uncompressed PCM (44.1hz, 16bit). Also only Hi-MD models will allow you to upload recordings from Hi-MD>PC. As far as a limiter, all models with recording capabilities have AGC (though I never use it because it tends to mess with the levels too much). Have a look at the models here: http://www.minidisc.org/himd_table.html

Are the tracks named on the HiMD prior to uploading, or are they "untitled"? Try this: Right-click on one of the column titles in "My Library"... You should see a list of different fields available (No., Title, Artist, Length, etc.). About 3/4 of the way down you should see "file path", click on that. Now scroll to the right in My Library and left-click on the top of the column where it says "File Path". Your files should now be organized by file name instead of title. This should put them in the right order. Let me know if this works or if you need me to elaborate or try something else.
