  1. OMFG *gagagagaga*... 500 AUD and I'd buy it
  2. Yes, please be gentle... use a hammer.
  3. ^ Oh boy. Spare me the thought, please.
  4. It's just a matter of time before your heart stops beating, your brain stops functioning or the sun blows up and a comet hits your house. Point being nothing is infinite. No personal consumer grade electronics, ie. mobile phones, PDAs, laptops or what not will last over 5 years. AppleCare extends your warranty to 3 years should anything go wrong. When those 3 years are up, there'll be something else worth upgrading to anyway.
  5. Jimmy, I offer my sincere apologies on behalf of the forum and I acknowledge and appreciate that you were only trying to help. Welcome and please do stay! Should there be any issues troubling you, don't hesitate to PM me... I will indeed ensure that you are well taken care off.
  6. Not true. In fact, it's the exact opposite re boot times when you take into account of the boot ROM loading times. Where I noticed made the most difference was over time when you fill your PC up with junk, it still remains relatively responsive compared to a single drive system. Raptors are a waste of money unless you're after extreme performance, and don't forget it's only 74GBs. I could fill that up easy in a month or 2, which is why I store only system files on the Raptors and use the Caviars for games, apps and stuff. A 20% increase in performance sounds about right, but like I said - it's not all about loading times. Instead of buying a single Raptor, buy 2 120GBs and RAID them - similar price, slightly better performance, triple the storage and less heat + noise. These 10k RPM beasts get REALLY hot. The only intake fan in my entire system is to cool these.
  7. Rofl. Well, it's not loud as in *VROOOOM* loud, but WDs have this really irritating high pitched whiny sound that won't get masked by fans or possibly your A/C. Hard drives (standard 8MB cache 7200 RPM ones) are pretty cheap nowadays. The RAID card might cost a bit, but the performance with a quad RAID will be every bit as good as dual Raptors. If you run a Raptor without RAID, it defeats the purpose as you're not going to get much improvement.
  8. LOL, you don't want a Raptor - they're unbearably loud. I'm planning of getting rid of mine (well, moving it to the other comp) and going for a quad RAID config instead.
  9. Macs read FAT/FAT32, so I don't find it suprising.
  10. It wasn't, it was directed at Qwarkz. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.p...iewmonth=200308 I have over 2 and a half thousand audio files archived in FLAC on this PC. FLAC does not use joint-stereo. Consider doing more research before assuming the meaning of terms.
  11. It's more of a 'best of' music collection sorta thing... a really big collection, since it'll store up to around 450 average sized ~270ish kbps VBR Nero LC-AAC files. Big pod stores ALAC and full albums. It's actually difficult to manage the use of both, more often than not I'm using the mini due to it's smaller size, and never at any point in time have I required even half the amount of music it stores for any single outing. I suppose it'll be useful at transporting my entire music archive when I'm off to Malaysia for the holidays, but while a 20GB has it's use, it's not really that useful any longer. TBH I wonder why people complain about space in the mini. I'm using uber high bitrate stuff and I've got more space than I'll ever need.
  12. iTunes doesn't sell MP3s. And AAC isn't Apple software. AAC = MP4.
  13. ^ No. The MC40EL (NH1/NH3D/NH900J/EH1) is inferior in almost every way compared to the iHP remote. For recording, I think most people prefer to have controls on the main unit which aren't cluttered, and a large display with level meters. Remotes are troublesome enough as they are, let alone be used for recording.
  14. ^^ Is that a smart alec remark I see? Um, 50 states, 3,537,441 square miles and that's not including Canada. Gee, "NH600D" tells me a lot. I'm not American, but at least I have enough brains to know how big NA is.
  15. I just told you what it is. Read up. You gave me the link, I gave you the reference. Surely you can check the page that says section 3/5 and look for the grid number. : In in doubt, Google is your friend.
  16. Yep, you've got an optical out. There's a section in the schematic under Main Section 3/5 F13 where it says there's a digital out (IC402, TOTX178) which is an optical transmitter. Bear in mind that the TOTX178 will only work on optical cables less than 5m in length. Pretty cool stuff, btw. The power amp stage has a built-in thermostat for overheating protection.
  17. Yeah but the DS8 isn't your cheapie everyday Sharp. It's a premium Sharp model intended for Japan domestic use.

    Dilema

You can use Ni-CD/MH AAs, but it's not recommended. It's been stated in the Sharp manual that you should only use alkaline AAs, and I don't think we've got anyone here who's experienced enough with internal electronics to give a conclusion on why you can't do that. No it won't. 10WM = 1000mAh, 14WM = 1350mAh. You'd get around 30% increased playback time, give or take a few, but definately not double the original amount. PS. Those of us who have been using MDs since the pre-NetMD days (especially those with R55/R90s) will know from experience that Sony greatly exaggerates battery life figures. Since battery life is no longer an issue in modern day portables (in exchange for deteriorating sound quality), most people no longer care about how much their real battery life falls short of the quoted figures.
  19. Um... wth? I don't know about you, but I think buy things because they work as advertised... if Starbucks makes good frappes then I buy from them? This isn't making any sense IMO. If you bump a guy's shoulder in a crowded subway and apologise, are you really sorry about it? Obviously you can't expect the cashier or salesman or whoever you see in the street to have a genuine concern about your life, they ask because it's courtesy which gives the impression of good customer service. It's good manners and practice and I encourage more companies to do that. Would you rather speak to a phone drone or an automated answering service? Personally I'd rather speak to a human than be told to "press 1 for telephone banking". Carefactor 0, mate. Let's talk about something relevant, a whinge because you've had a bad day with WalMart or Starbucks or whatever doesn't really belong here.
  20. Not less lossy in terms of data but maybe more 'efficient' is the key word here in the sense that it works (marginally) better than old ATRAC at psychoacoustic compression techniques. At it's current iteration, SP is still a superior codec (IMO) given it's higher bitrate, but ATRAC3+ will improve later. The difference won't be noticable for 99% of people, I myself wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Hi-SP and SP without an A to B comparison. This is common to every other lossy codec around, in the same way that --alt-preset-insane LAME would be better than 256kbps VBR OGG, but the noticable difference at such bitrates would really be negligible.
  21. ^ Like, in 2 years time? <-- will be having 2G Mini by then. Nice one Chris, start a thread like this with no pictures in it. The childrens' toys: Then, the real stuff: Cables are self-made (with the help of a friend). :rasp:
