EX71s are the 'forgiving' one in the sense that they mask out artifacts pretty well, muddying everything else along with it.

20 on a Sharp would be around ~17 on a recent Sony (5mW@16Ohms x2) portable. The Sharp will power all phones better, but not necessarily louder.

Erm for 2.4 grand I'd expect paper in oil/polyprop caps and wirewound resistors. Not that it'd fit in a portable. :rasp: My PC1 is full of Elna caps and standard grade metal film resistors, which isn't bad. Sony does put a reasonable amount of effort into details like these in their medium-higher grade decks/home components and stuff.

Some guy at Head-Fi has had a close-up with many of the Qualia line at Sony's HQ in Tokyo. IIRC he did confirm that the 017 is just an E10 in a brass shell.

Hi-MD doesn't support ID3. It doesn't support MP3. It doesn't support AAC. It only supports ATRAC, ATRAC3 and ATRAC3+. Sonicstage (the crap that comes with it) will support MP3 and transcode it into ATRAC3+ for you.
