  1. If all you use WMA for is for import and transfer to SS (and I assume you later delete it) try installing JetAudio 6. It's free and it can encode and transcode from any of the supported formats to any other. (Except to MP3, which requires registration.) I convert my FLACs to WMA-L, import, transfer and then wipe them out. That's the only use I have for WMA.
  2. You can try and convert to WMA lossless instead of wav. Takes about 40% less space and sounds the same.
  3. Also, try recording something else (CD from your DVD player through optical) to the MD and then transfer that to the computer. That'll help nab the culprit
  4. Norton. Yeah, it's crappy. But I got it for free with an off-lease laptop. And it's the enterprise edition, with free lifetime definitions. But the computer that got that trojan is my brother's, with MacAfee and MS antispyware and AdAware. Spybot came and Pwned them all.
  5. Spybot was the only app capable of stopping a trojan that kept on regenerating on my computer, even after Ad-Aware and MS Antispyware had already cleaned it. That's not overrated in my book.
  6. Hold it. I think that means that someone who knows how the actual hardware units work, will be in charge of managing the software too. Which could be good, as now Sony's right hand and left hand will know what the other's doing.
  7. Yes, they are. But without the heat of a laser to warm the disc up, the magnetic info cannot be changed. I think only one of those magnets used in car junkyards would be strong enough to damage a MD.
  8. Did you use the backup tool, or simply dragged and dropped?
  9. I can't believe no one has mentioned that HI-MD 2nd Gen can play MP3s.
  10. It stores slightly less than 1 GB on the disc. It has to take some space for file system data and some other things. That's when it comes to files. It works like a giant floppy disk. Time is only taken into consideration when you're using music through SonicStage, though it will only show you available space and not remaining time. The unit will tell you about time available, but only when directly recording to it. I think it works with MP3s from 64 to 320 CBR. VBR can make them choke. It will work on USB 2.0 but at USB 1.1 speeds. No. It's like having a CD player read two tracks at the same time. Only the NHF800 has radio. That depends on the codec, if you are using the external battery, amount of shock the unit is subjected to and other factors. I usually only recharge my NH900 once a week. 12 hours or more on Hi-SP mode is what I get on mine, IIRC.
  11. Dude, just google for the SP2. I downloaded it last week from a third party (Legal) site and installed it. No authentication BS. (Can't get the CD because the laptop belongs to my brother's company, and they're a bunch of cheapskates) :EDIT: http://windows.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsit...6displaylang=en Disregard the "IT pro" crap. Just give it time. All that authentication talk is BS. (See my sig. :-p)
  12. I can carry about a third of what I would fit on a HI-MD. So why toss them away? I use them to move data between my PS2 and my computer.
  13. My only problem with gay people is when lesbians treat me like scum just because I have a... Y chromosome. Allow me to explain. Not all of them are mean to me. It's happened once or twice, but boy they sure acted as if I had killed their little brother and their dog and tore up their toys when they were kids. They come to the window I work at and they ALWAYS have to come complaining about how the company discriminates against them because they're not hetero. (which we didn't know until that point). Didn't get 10% discount on their bill? OMFG WE'RE BEING TEH HOMOPHOBIC!!!11!!!ONE!! Credit card got declined? OMFG! WE DON'T LIKE GAY PEOPLE!!11!! Account closed due to non-payment? OMFG!! I'M A JERK WHO THINKS I'M BETTER BECAUSE I'M STRAIGHT!!11!!. (Which they don't know. I could be bi or gay too, but they are judging me based on looks. Go figure.) Seriously, I really wish that those who are always clamoring for acceptance due to being different stopped giving me a hard time because I happen to have a pe*is and my sexual preference is different from theirs. Sorry for the rant. That being said, I have several gay co-workers who don't go mixing their sexuality with every other little aspect of their lives, and treat me the exact way they expect to be treated: Like a human being who deserves respect and has something good to give. Of course they get that respect in return from me. About the movie. I find it really stupid how Hollywood cannot portray straight men as sensitive, caring and loving. Sure, I love being seen as masculine, firm and all that which is expected of a guy nowadays. But sheesh, it's not like we're all stone-hearted emotionless statues. Yes, I'm the kind of guy who still buys flowers for a girl and likes to kiss their wrist if they let me. So I agree with Volta's comment on it. Thanks and sorry if I said too much.
  14. Just use Atrac at 66 or 132kbps. Mono SP is only available for real time recording. Besides, since the original signal is mono, you'll get binaural sound even when SS converts it to stereo. Two channels with the same info at the same time. Also, it's not that they are afraid of mono. There's simply no point in developing a mono-only bitrate when 48 or 66 kpbs stereo will do. Besides, if there was a mono codec with coud be therefore 33 or 24 kbps (since it's half of the bitrate needed for stereo) who has the time and patience to record 200+ hours of speech?
  15. Do post them for sale. I wanted to get one to my brother and another to my friend for her birthday. And keep two or three for nostalgia's sake and for the future. Who knows when we'll be able to get a digital recorder that can upload.
  16. I'm not good enough with DOS. Started on Winblows, and got to like it only if it's 2K. XP looks too kiddy for me. I didn't deal with the nightmares of 98. As much as I think Linux is the cure for many of our computer woes, I still can't get out of my head the thought that only Uber-Nerds capable of holding entire conversations using command lines can handle it.
  17. Sounds like the recording block is going to kick the bucket. Try getting another player, a solid state one as mentioned above.
  18. Try editing with something else but Nero (Audacity, for example, which is free.) I've had Nero muck up some FLACs I edited with it, so I think that's where the problem stems from. Or maybe one of your HI-MD Renderer Dlls might be corrupt. It doesn't hurt to re-download them.
  19. Try ripping to Windows Media Lossless. No, seriously. This is one WMA that doesn't suck. SS sees WMA-L as variable bitrate, and AFAIK, my Hi-MDs made from those are very gapless. Way better than Atrac Lossless.
  20. You can try the Total Recorder and real-time playback through USB method. Slow, but safe and 100% digital.
  21. Only once. I somehow overtaxed the CPU opening two more apps when SS was splitting and then it gave me the same error. (Tracks coming from another computer? What the heck have you been smoking, Sony?). By a shot of sheer luck, HI-MDRenderer was able to convert that file. Talk about odds.
