Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
aeriyn replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
Even with the backlight set to "auto" the remote's effect on the unit's battery life is next to negligible. -
Um... there are no Hi-MD models that will do linear PCM for under $150. The only one under $200 is the NH600D, and you can't put PCM directly onto the discs with it. Also, iPod Mini is a whole lot smaller than any of these Hi-MD units. It's smaller (and about the same weight, maybe a bit lighter) than my Sharp MD-DS8... It plays both .wav and Apple Lossless. And you don't have to record in realtime. Fast 2.4mb/s USB2.0/Firewire transfers, my friend. Battery life... meh, it's not that big of a deal with Li-Ion batteries, since you don't have to wait until they die to charge them. Just toss it on the dock every night when you go to bed. When you arise, behold! A freshly charged Li-Ion. (although that is indeed one of my gripes with iPods... I like my DS8's 28-30 hour battery life using SP mode.) Most of the Hi-MD units don't have all that much battery life either. *points at the NH1*

Moving to correct forum... I don't think I've ever actually resoldered headphones before... so I don't think I can help you there. There's a rather extensive recommended 'phones section in here, but if you're looking to spend minimal money... I really don't know. The senns aren't too bad, but they may not give you the bass you're looking for. Maybe EX71s, although I'm a bit reluctant to recommend them because I don't like them all that much myself.

Um... that is what SonicStage does when it converts an MP3 to ATRAC3. It decodes the MP3 track to PCM .wav format and then encodes it in ATRAC3 ~132kbps (LP2). However... hmm... you might notice an increase in quality if you use a program other than SonicStage to do the decoding, since SonicStage's MP3 decoder is not the best in the world. I might see about this and find out if it makes a noticeable difference. I wonder... *runs off to try it*

Hi there. Welcome to the forums. To answer your question, no, you can't upload tracks recorded in "standard MD" mode with any unit, Hi-MD or otherwise. Only those tracks recorded in Hi-MD mode and in analog, such as from a microphone, can be uploaded. Even then, it's uploaded in a nearly useless locked format (OpenMG) which can only be accessed with SonicStage.

The R900 uses a 3vDCin wall wart, which I believe you can find quite easily at radio shack or the like.

Recording lectures, hmm? Is that all you're going to do with it? If so, I'm sure you could snag an older MD unit (such as the Sony MZ-R50 or Sharp MD-MS702) for around 30-40 bucks on eBay; maybe cheaper. They all have microphone jacks. However, all are not MDLP compatible, so only 80 minutes per disc (or 160 in mono, which would likely be just fine for lecture recordings). If you are also going to use it as a music player... well, that's different then. It opens up a whole lot of new questions before I can make recommendations. First off, will you use it as more than a lecture recorder? Will you want to be able to quickly transfer MP3 tracks to MD? Do you want new or used? I'll help as best as I can.

You're using Sound Forge? I did not know you could do that. Try SonicStage. You can download it from http://www.connect.com.

Would English Sonic Stage 2.1 Work With Japanese Model NH1?
aeriyn replied to Aznsilvrboy's topic in Minidisc
Yes. It will work. -
Is that all you changed? And, did you write down the original entries in case you had to switch it back? If so, change the altered codes back to original settings.

Yet another HiMD wish which Sony should of thought of
aeriyn replied to kickingVegas's topic in Minidisc
The NH1's cable is... different. It's the same one used by the N10, and it is not standard at all. Only Sony makes it, and there are no adapters. -
... why me? Apparently banning you didn't have the desired effect. Please, please do not dig up old posts.

Eek. The MZ-R909 is already a full-featured MD unit. It doesn't need to be hacked. The hex addresses in the R909's service mode will definitely be different than the ones in the N707... I'm afraid you probably messed some things up. And I don't know the factory defaults for the R909.

I just think we should stop expecting Sony to give us anything new with MD/Hi-MD and just hack the shit ourselves.

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
aeriyn replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
 If my country would deal with fission fragments intelligently, you would be wrong. Sadly, though, you are correct. Sinking a concrete vault 2 kilometers beneath parts of the desert in the southwest would be the way to go, using sealed containers filled with a concrete backwall. Now let's get back on topic, plzkthnx. -
Latexxx, I believe he is meaning Hi-SP transcoded from some lower-bitrate MP3. That, actually, would kinda suck.

As a citizen of the US, I'd prefer if they'd shut down coal or oil plants when we yank our wall warts out. Nuclear is a good deal cleaner. -
Spectrum analyzation of WAV, 256kbps ATRAC3+, 132kbps ATRAC3
aeriyn replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
By default SonicStage transcodes everything to Hi-LP 64kbps ATRAC3+. In order for you to get it to transcode tracks to Hi-SP, you have to fiddle with the options a bit. -
By the way, Zammy, the NF520D is a downloader only and you lose the ability to record SP mode discs. Also, SonicStage's software encoder is not nearly as good at encoding as the recorder's internal ATRAC DSP... so even the LP2 is going to not sound so hot. Just my two cents. :rasp:

Spectrum analyzation of WAV, 256kbps ATRAC3+, 132kbps ATRAC3
aeriyn replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
It all depends on what you're after. IMO, Hi-LP mangles most music into muddy, unrecognizeable blobs of sound, however it's perfectly acceptible for talk radio recordings, stand up comedy, audiobooks, etc. For music, for anything with more complex instrumentation than your basic pop, I'd suggest Hi-SP. Since I do not own a Hi-MD unit myself (just basic old MD stuff) I use old SP mode, and I imagine that Hi-SP is pretty similar. Although several people have claimed that ATRAC 4.5R is superior to Hi-SP. Since I have no Hi-MD equipment, testing that would be difficult for me. -
Telep, when browsing the forum, try not to dig up threads that are more than a few weeks old, kthnx. :whatever: Oh, and welcome to the forums.
-
Actually... I don't know how to manually do it. Windows XP did it for me automatically.
-
There's one that has twenty times what Hi-MD has and plays lossless/linear PCM. And it fits in your pocket quite well. iPod. Not $150, but neither is Hi-MD. Only the NH600D is under $200, and because it only uses SonicStage, the highest you can go on it is Hi-SP.

Dunno where you can get JP SonicStage. Romaji is Japanese/Chinese words written in Roman (english) characters.
-
The Japanese version of SonicStage allows the input of Kanji and Kana characters. Why not just put them in romaji?
