Make sure your menu mode is always set to "Advanced" when making those type of changes or you may never see all the important user settings.

p. 75 of the manual. Menu options on the recorder or the remote, select "Beep" under options. I haven't heard a beep since the first day. In other words, it saves the setting.

The RM-MC40ELK is the remote that ships with the NH1 and the NH900 "World Traveler" version. It is a nice 3 line remote that will show you recording levels in the dark due to the backlight. One caveat, it ain't the brightest in the world but readable in the dark clubs, etc without a problem. It will run you about $80 with shipping. Check on ebay for bargaining4all.com. It takes about 2 weeks to ship from China but it's the best price you can get and it's a worthwhile upgrade. While you are at it, buy a NiMh gumstick from him as well to replace the one that ships with the NH900.

Don't forget the "issues" with NH1: expensive Lithium Ion battery and you can't add a dry cell attachment (say you are in the field or at a music festival and you can't recharge the Li ion, you might be out of luck). I say the NH900 is the better deal if you buy the RM-MC40ELK remote for your NH900, you have the best of both worlds and it's still cheaper in the long run (battery replacement included)

I really don't think the MD is the problem since I have had screwups and then re-recorded and uploaded without problem off the same MD. I really think the big problem I was having was the size of the data chunk being re-written back to the MD. If I track my shows before uploading, I do NOT have any screwups. Just my experience.
-
I am fairly confident that the software is doing the encoding. Camp... if you want the best sounding MD files, then you will need to hook an optical input to your MD from your CD source. It's real time but you will get the best sound if you let the MD do the encoding and recording. It's a slow process but a few folks swear by it. I just rip it with Simple Burner (if I have the CD) or SS if I don't. I haven't personally been able to tell the difference or tried to listen that hard :wacky: So, in other words SS or SB: the software is encoding and transferring the files (the MD is not really "recording" just writing to disc) Realtime optical or analog connections: MD is recording and encoding (some say this sounds better)

My old Sharp DR7 is made just like my NH900, metal front and hard plastic back. I put that recorder through some trials at shows, including recording at Smilefest for 3 days in a barn with a saw dust floor and it never gave me any problems. Just last week, my NH900 slipped out of my hand, hit the desk and chair and landed on the carpet. My 3 year old and I both just stood there in shock and awe. Well, it recorded just fine on Saturday night afterwards at the Umphrey's McGee show in Charleston. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6995 These things are pretty sturdy if you ask me but I still carry it around in a padded Otterbox just because I do still worry about taking care of it. I'm weird too.

Here's another show I recorded this weekend in Charleston, SC of Umphrey's McGee with my Audio Technica AT822 straight into the line in on my NH900 with the bass rolloff active. Sounds really good in my opinion. I still recommend to Hi-MD recorders to make tracks on the MD before uploading, the system failure only rears its head when I try to upload 1 large track. When I make track marks, I have not had any problems. Another great Hi-MD recording... http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details...db.php?id=20349

How much of a gap in recording whilst switching disks?
mrsoul replied to pneumad's topic in Live Recording
If you have Hi-MD you definitely don't have to change that often. Especially if you record in Hi-SP. Even PCM gives you 94 minutes and I have found that to be adequate for all of my recordings. I have found that if you write a label in your blanks, you get a faster cycle when you switch MDs. In other words, prep your blanks with a disc title in the TOC and your recorder will "recognize" it faster. I always did that with standard MDs and I used mono SP back then for more time and less disc changes, etc. -
I am running this upgrade so far without any hassles or bugs noted. I REALLY like not having Connect in this one. It's a drag if you ask me. The Create an Audio CD option is cool but nothing fancy but it's got the restrictions of OpenMG and counts the transfers like anything else. No problem adding a WAV file that was converted from an uploaded PCM OMA for recording to CD. So, I guess that is one purpose but I think I will stick with Nero. Overall, other than Connect being gone, there's not much difference and I can't tell any difference in the layout.

Read what you just posted. You are stating that I can't tell the difference between gray/silver and black. That's a bold statement to make and something that made me laugh. My NH900 has a silver body but the area around the LCD is BLACK as night. Take a look again at the minidisc.org site and at my images. I promise you that is a BLACK area around my LCD; it is NOT silver or even gray. If you want me to take some other pictures, not a problem. Certainly, I am not the only NH900 owner that has a black area around the LCD screen unlike the totally silver ones. I realize it is not all black but it is not all silver or gray. Look at this: http://minidisc.org/images/sony_mznh900_avwatch.jpg Whatever the color, congratulations on your purchase. It's a solid piece of hardware that has not shown any problems, unlike the software... I am very happy that I sold my DR7 and my MXD-D400 and replaced them both with the NH900, it does the job of both very well.

What a minute. There must be 3 versions of this model out there. If you look at this page on minidisc.org http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH900.html you will see 3 different models: a totally silver model, a silver model with a black face (I guess that's what we call mine) and a totally black model. To be honest, I had not paid attention to that totally black model as an option. I guess what I am referring to is this "I expected to get the one with a totally silver face and body and that was not my preference since I wanted the one with a black face and I was pleasantly surprised to receive the black face model." Oops! Maybe yours will have a black face, I have the red face now :wacky:

I have the paper receipt right here on my desk and there is no reference to black on the NH900 order. The item listed as SONMZNH900 but it is the black one. Here's a link to a picture of my setup: http://home.earthlink.net/~mhjohns_music2/...x/otterbox.html Sorry you are not getting anywhere with my lead, I got the NH900 black from Etronics whether on purpose or not. It's a shame Sony isn't pushing both in the US. I think the black does look better and that's why I wanted one. I guess I should consider myself lucky.

Battery Life Extention -- Using AA NiMH with NH900?
mrsoul replied to etotheix's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I think the NH900 will calculate how much battery power it needs to write the TOC and reserve that when recording just so you will have enough to write the TOC, it makes the meter adjustments based on what it needs. You probably have read the many warnings Sony provided about not having enough power, etc. Just make sure you get that TOC written to the MD before losing all power. If the battery runs down while recording and the TOC has not been written, you may be out of luck. I haven't tried that yet personally. Yes, you can swap the external out when recording, I just don't think the battery level will change but you should still have the added power if that makes sense. -
I also was not trying to discredit what you said, I was caught on a saracastic moment. I also went to the site and it no longer list the item as black but that is what I have and I got it late September which wasn't that long ago. I was surprised to get the black one since that I is what I wanted and I couldn't find it in the U.S. It was a cool surprise when I opened the package. Hope that helps since my receipt does NOT list NH900 Black just NH900. Maybe you can call them. I have bought 2 MDs from them and I have never had a problem, fast shipping and good prices. Just my experience with them of course.

You can record to a standard MD from a Hi-MD in Atrac3 (the older version of MD or MDLP, whatver you want to call it: SP, LP2 and LP4) or you can reformat the standard MD to Hi-MD format and record in Hi-MD Atrac3+ (PCM, Hi-SP, Hi-LP and the Low 48 Hi-LP). You get the best of both if you ask me. I think a simple check of the minidisc.org FAQ would help you: http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html

You want a picture of my black NH900 next to my receipt for that other net vendor to see? I would be happy to provide the details.

I got my NH900 Black from Etronics in late September and I have really enjoyed this unit other than a few problems with Sonic Stage. This is a solid recorder, reminds me of the Sharp DR7 build with metal front and hard plastic back. Check this link for the Etronics page http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_co...ore=&catid=4353 I would highly recommend that you upgrade your remote and gumsticks for the optimal experience. The RM-MC40ELK is a worthy upgrade and you can find better gumsticks. You can also use a AA dry cell alkaline and get over 2 hours of PCM recording. A great unit and something I enjoy using. Checkout the manual while you decide: http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH900.html

Yeah, the MZ-S1 just scrolls the track title, nothing fixed during playback. My NH900 does show more info like Disc Title, Artist, Group Title depending on which of a number of display options I choose. Not sure if the NH600 has the same options, did you try downloading the manual from minidisc.org? Take a look here for display options: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/MZNH600D.pdf

Welcome to the forum. You should check the minidisc.org site for info on the HI-MD but to answer your final question, you can record and play the standard MDs on the Hi-MD but you only get 1/3 the amount of memory on the reformatted MDs compared to a Hi-MD disc. My MZ-S1 Net MD shows the title of the track on the LCD, not sure if that answers your question.
-
You can set SS to NOT delete the copy off the Hi-MD after transfer. You would only be able to play the original off the Hi-MD through SS, no more uploads but you can still play back and record to your HD and then burn if need be.
-
Use this link for the most current version of Sonic Stage. (I did NOT use any of the CD software when I got my NH900 or MZ-S1, just the online versions and I have had no problems) http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=4642 Also, check here for the Simple Burner 2.0 if you ever decide to load music from your PC to Hi-MD. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=5552 Sounds like you might need to uninstall any of the old NetMD or OMG Jukebox software before attempting to reload the new version of SS 2.x. Battery Life Extention -- Using AA NiMH with NH900?
mrsoul replied to etotheix's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I thought I submitted a post last night, well here goes again. I did test the NH900 with an AA alkaline and the NiMH AA form factor 2000 mAh 1.2v from Rayovac. Really surprised with my results. Nothing like the last time I tried the NiMh AA alone. I guess it had a low charge, I never got a message about insufficient power this time but I confident that I remember it showing 4 bars when just playing in the first test. That is why this 2nd test was so surprising. 1. Power Gold (generic from Dollar store, cheap) AA dry cell alkaline: PCM mode with optical input recording. Battery level meter showed 4 of 4 bars at the beginning. I recorded the first full Hi-MD (@ 92 mins) and then put in another Hi-MD. I recorded until about 38 min on the 2nd Hi-MD before I noticed the battery meter flashing. Once I stopped and saved to disc, the meter went up to 2 bars. I guess it was calculating what it needed to write the TOC, etc. I was very happy to see my AA test worked. It amazes me that I can get at almost 2.5 hours with a regular AA battery. Can anything else touch that when recording PCM WAV? 2. NiMh AA form factor 1.2v battery 2000 mAh from Rayovac with fresh charge: PCM mode with optical input recording The battery level only showed 3 of 4 meters when starting the recording, but it did start recording and I stopped the recording after about 15 minutes because I needed to get to sleep. When I stopped and the TOC was written, the meter again went back to 4 of 4 bars. I guess the 1.5v vs. 1.2v makes that a difference for the meter. Well, I cannot explain the results of my first test that I reported in another post regarding the NiMh. I will have to do so more testing with the NiMh AA when I get some time, I will post the max time with a fresh charge when I test again. But, I am very pleased to know that I can use just a alkaline AA battery to at least fill a Hi-MD in PCM.If you have to change the disc, why not just change the battery? Just use a gumstick and a AA if you don't want to spend time changing both the disc and the power supply. Again, is there anything out there that will record this much with just 1 AA battery? Hope this helps some others looking at the NH900. It made the difference for me in looking at the NH1 and the NH900, now I am really glad I went with the NH900. -
Battery Life Extention -- Using AA NiMH with NH900?
mrsoul replied to etotheix's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Like Latexxx stated, you need an external charger for that AA form factor NiMh because the dry cell pack attachment blocks access to the AC power source connection. I have used alkaline in my old mp3 player (now my wife is using it) and I can attest that the Rayovac NiMh rechargeables gave me at least 2-3 times the playing time at the gym with that mp3 player. I have only used the NiMh AA in the dry cell pack on my NH900 so I don't know what difference the Hi-MD use would produce but I am inclined to think it would be equivalent. I plan to test the AA alone some more with my NH900. I have noted that you need to power cycle the recorder off for it to recognize the AA dry cell. In other words, if you add the AA while the recorder is playing off the gumstick alone, the battery level does NOT change. If you cycle the power, the recorder's battery level will go up (the dry cell is recognized at the point???) Anybody have insight? I am going to try the AA alone for editing and recording again tonight if I get the chance. The last time, I got the insufficient power warning with just the AA. When recording shows in PCM, I usually change the gumstick out during set change since I have an extra but usually I have more than enough power on the first to continue but I like to play it safe, that's also why I always use the AA dry cell pack too. I also drain the gumsticks and the AA at least once a month to keep them fresh. It was the main reason I went with the Nh900 over the NH1 but like I stated above, it only supplements the gumstick and does not work alone when recording. Any suggestions are appreciated. http://www.minidisc.org/himd_2004_comparis...ison_table.html (check this table for estimates about recording time in PCM with the NH900) Interesting to note it lists recording time with an AA alone. Makes me wonder what I am doing wrong... -
I stand corrected. The batteries were from Hong Kong and don't have a label. I had to find the old email receipt and go back to the site. They are 1400mAh gumsticks. Still better than the 900 that comes with the NH900. I was very wrong about the mAh on those batteries. I have corrected my post. Here is a link to a previous discussion about these batteries and the AA. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t...6295&highlight= BTW, I have used a rechargeable NiMh AA (that one is positively 2000 mAh) from Rayovac (the 15 minute type) and I have had no problem. My old Sharp DR7 manual said to avoid mixing the rechargeable alkaline and the NiMh but since they are both NiMh, I figured it would be okay, I have not had any problems with that combo. The only weird thing is this: if you use just a fresh AA NiMh in the dry cell you CANNOT record or edit, only if there is a gumstick in place. It will play but no editing or recording and the battery level will be full. Weird. Again, sorry for the confusion. :wacky:
