  1. and it would not help any to upgrade to usb2 as the media itself have a upper speed limit. that is unless you use a stronger laser and a faster motor so that you can heat and spin the disc faster. problem is that then one would most likely go above the 5 volts that a usb can deliver...
  2. if it wasnt for those icons in the upper right corner i would have sworn that it was a mac app hmm, i have a feel that the md will be moved into the realm of pro music more and more. this including simpler and simpler software to get ones recordings off the unit but no support for people that want to use it as a dap outside of pcm and maybe atrac home recordings. ie, this to stop the music hardware section and the electronics section of sony from competeing for marketshare in the same area.
  3. so one can then assume that sonicstage is repackaging the data after the transfer? as i recall some older reports that the files created after a upload are diffrent from the ones on the disc. hmm, could one trick the atrac codec into playing the uploaded file without requireing a repackage... but yes, one needs to get the data transfer system working. then atleast one can make reliable backups.
  4. or basicly write a replacement. as in get hold of the right signals to pass on to the hardware to get the transfer going. the real problem comes from playing back the then uploaded atrac tracks. that is unless one stays with pcm and mp3
  5. so are the files decrypted and reencrypted when transferd to or from the computer and if so where is it done? and if its done by the player, can we fool it into talking to software outside of the sony ones so that we can upload and download files any number of times? hmm, it would be even better if said software could be run of a md as in, drop the app onto the md as data, then use the app to up- or down-load to said md and could someone maybe produce some traffic of a mp3 transfer to the 2. gen units? and, is it the software or the unit that upholds the uploaded flag on recordings? as in, does the software check and refuse to accept the data if it have the flag set, or is it the unit that refuse to send a recording that have the uploaded flag set? sure, this may not be relevant for new recordings with SS 3.2 or whatever the new version is. but from what i understand there are still people out there that have recordings with said flag set. ok so there is tools available to get around that but it would still be nice to know
  6. im voting for one of the slotloads. or hell, how about a 3,5" internal drive version? son of the floppy ok, i know thats no design but i just love the idea of a 1GB "floppy"
  7. and i take it that the commands used to read said areas are ecrypted and so cant be reproduced unless its cracked somehow? for if its cracked then a special program should be able to clone a md, or even allow for a simple file transfer app outside of simpleburner or sonicstage. im guessing that the boot zone contains a disc specific key thats changed every time you initialize the disc. and the system zone contains a list of keys for the on disc music files.
  8. it smells like the hi-md is being dumped in europe. atleast one of the biggest scandinavian home entertainment chains have started to sell a bunch of the 600 insanely cheap. its as if they are cleaning out stock.
  9. figures... this is paranoid stuff... kinda funny that there are reports of the intel devel machines that apple is shipping ahead of the mac-on-intel release have tpm chips on them. this is interesting times indeed.
  10. so in theory one can change said fields and maybe be able to upload again? or is there a hidden checksum somewhere that will trash the file completly if one tryes that? anyone willing to risk it?
  11. most of them should be matched by a 1GB flash card, only one thats not matched is the cost. for the cost of one of those cards you should be able to get atleast 10-20 himd discs
  12. and with a properly designed digital recorder the recorded audio would show up as wav files, or your prefered compressed format if the recorder can deal with it, so that all you have to do is access the usb storage media that pops up when you plug the player in and drag the files over. no messing with recorder software on the computer or queing the player and similar. basicly the perfect dap would not need a program like itunes or sonicstage to perform basic functions. they would instead enhance said functions when available by allowing you to set up playlists and similar and then transfer those to the player. and it would have cheap removable media that was fully rw (not this simulated rw that you have with dvd and cd rw media. you should have the ability to delete any file on the media and be able to use the new free space to store new files without having to "format" it every time). the hi-md have so much promise in its basic design. but with all the drm paranoia that sony wraps it in it's getting strangled. im starting to wonder what kind of cost and limits sony puts on a technology licence as i would love to start a company, licence the hi-md tech and make a drm free player with the same capabilitys as a iriver or iaudio player. if that dont have for a ipod "killer" nothing does
  13. but drm is still a requirement for mp3's?
  14. i dont think any have been anounced. that is unless those new ones count as 3rd gen...
  15. that sounds like the sony we have all come to know, yes. but do allow people to dream i would love to see sony drop drm requirements for mp3 files as they would then see the salesnumbers shoot thru the roof by my guesstimates. they would open up the market not only to windows users but any os out there that supports usb mass storage devices! but with the piracy paranoia that goes around these days it seems the only companys that can put out stuff like these are south korean ones that do not have any times to a record studio...
  16. hmm, was it not y's that got a letter from apple telling him to can that dock as it was to close to how the one in os x worked?
  17. man i wish one would know for sure as one of the local electronics chains had a limited sale on the 600 these days. i im partial to getting it but i would love to have native playback of mp3s rather then having to recode everyone of them...
  18. what will be interesting is if the mac app for uploading will be available for download and will work for older hi-md recorders...
  19. i can fully relate to the people that want to select hdd based players. why? well if i get a iriver or iaudio player i have about 30GB (seems to be best cost vs capasity at the moment) of storage that i can hook up to any recent computer and drag music to and from, plus any other files for that matter. only thing missing as that one of those companys goes full throttle and puts a touchscreen across the whole front of the player, a linux based pda interface on the drive and and still keeps the simple drag and drop interface available. hell, make the linux enviroment bootable off the drive so that if you have a computer that can boot from usb then you can fire up a fully working linux enviroment on it all this on a iaudio in combo with the big screen remote they have and i would be hooked for sure the funny thing is that both brands of players are made by south-korean companys from what i understand. basicly south-korea have overtaken japan in creating next gen gizmos only thing missing would be the ability to have this system hook up to my cellphone so that i could use the remote of the player to control my phone, checking who calls, making calls from my phonebook and so on. and dont forget about including a cable that have a handfree mic on it and allow the user to connect any kind of headset to it so that you can use your favorite headset and make calls without having to remove them
  20. like i have stated other places, this can only happen is sony sells of their record label and their movie studio. then they can go back to what they at one time did best, make tech gadgets this would basicly turn the md into the new casette, and we all know what a killing sony made with that and the walkman brand hell, given that aol and timewarner split up not to long ago should be a indication that its not allways good to mix both sides of the coin in one company. even less so if diffrent sides cant agree or have diffrent view on how the world should be shaped (round or flat, guess who have what view). but if this where to happen, i think that md would hold its own until the day that small, cheap, fully rw (cd/dvd-rw is a joke, you cant delete a file and reclaim space without reburning the disc), holographic media came around. it would basicly make md the new floppy so, i wonder what kinds of limits sony have on licencing out their md format...
  21. if you look into the news about some repackaged 2nd gen hardware you will see that they are going to pitch it as a PCM DAT replacement. complete with microphone in the package and a apple mac wav upload app.
  22. so basicly the only diff is that they have packaged a mac app for uploading pcm. cute. i have a feel someone over on the hi-md forum would be interested in that app
  23. as in recordings done to atrac? that depends. i dont think they are putting out a mac codec for atrac so i wonder how much use that will be.
  24. err, so umd use mo to store data? or is it that it uses the same buildtin lense trick that hi-md does so that you can spread a smaller point over a larger area for reading?
  25. simple, you dont. what you do instead is give the kids all kinds of bling bling functions to play with its funny realy that a brick like the ipod is hailed for its simple and functional design. yet it seems that the shuffle isnt selling to well as it dont have a disply http://asono.com/ anyone? i guess im one of those tech geeks that will never understand the concept of clean lines...
