  1. if the content of the database cant be understood then the security of the database is not important...
  2. still, can you get a box of 10 usb tumbs?
  3. i would not call usb flash storage a floppy replacement by a long shot for a very important reason: the usb stick is to expensive to give away to someone. a floppy you can just hand of and forget about it as you can allways grab a new box of 10-20 floppys cheap. so we have 2-3 media formats that hva some of the functions of the classical floppy; cd/dvd: cheap media, but no ram-like rewritability. usb sticks: expensive media, ram-like rewriteability. the only formats that have come close to copying the floppy is the jazz and zip formats, a floppy extension that bombed (could read both old floppys and new 120mb discs) and the minidisc for general public use. atleast thats my opinion. so i would love to see sony open up their usb storage unit info so that companys could start making internal versions for use like the old floppy drive. yes, i know that these days you get flash readers in that slot but they have the problem of supporting 101 diffrent flash types and more are announced every month! the minidisc as a storage media is a stroke of genius, but sony's paranoia about pirates have turned it into a mess.
  4. not likely unless one takes apart the file logics of the game as im guessing that most games are coded to expect all files to be available and will crash badly if this is not the case.
  5. just what the world needs, another high capacity WORM media. i dont see this as a floppy replacement even tho it have a similar design (case and all that). to be a floppy replacement it have to be basicly like the md, fully randomly rewriteable. even the dvd/cd rw's are only rewriteable if you erase its toc first, you cant delete a file in the middle of it and reclaim the space it used...
  6. its kinda like the old record player that used bumps to record analog audio, but this uses a 1 atom "needle" to register and create pits in a digital grip pattern by moving individual atoms. basicly you have a row of needles that are dragged along the surface, registrering the small pits when reading. the thing is that i think this can be put into a housing similar to todays chips, and is fully RW able.
  7. yes originaly a kilobyte was equal to 1024 byte, but as kilo is normaly equal 1000 they introduced some time ago the expression kibi (i think it was that) to cover their asses when storage media had their space calculated in 1000 rather then 1024. even more funny is that a os like say windows calculate in 1024 but lable it kilobyte rather then kibibyte...
  8. only happens if some company start making em in bulk, and then only if they get competition...
  9. this is what hi-md need, good looking and easy to get hold of media!
  10. so the question becomes, how detailed is the musical image. more detailed equals needs higher bitrate. this is why vbr mode for mp3 is kinda nice as then the more detailed bits get a higher bitrate while the simple ones gets a lower one, nice compromise on quality vs space. still, if your going do to something to the music after its recorded (like say speeding it up and so on) you should go pcm as then "all" info is saved (pcm equals whats used on cds).
  11. my bad, i was thinking of that program talked about in the news section that was able to transfer mp3s to the hd players without needing a sony app. it would be nice to know if that one works on 2nd gen hi-md players to. the app your talking about is a diffrent, right?

    I'm Scared

most likely the charger is fried but gave no current on to the battery. atleast if i got my electric knowhow in the right order... alltho im a bit surprised that the friend didnt get any special effect out of this trick, stuffing 220 onto a 110 should in theory lead to a spectacular overload (or maybe the watts pulled wasnt enough, i have my info from people flipping the pc power unit to the wrong current).
  13. could anyone be botherd to test the mp3 manager in combo with a md player?
  14. any news on this in combo with the latest hi-md units? it would be ncie to know that one dont need sonicstage to dump mp3s onto it
  15. hmm, are they talking the entire line or just md's but not hi-md's? as for the production of discs, tdk makes md's i think but hi-md's are so far sony only iirc...
  16. man i hope that the D10 comes to norway soon, but the only one i have spotted so far in a local shop is a 600 or something like that and it was priced way out of my range
  17. the thing is that you cant give away usb sticks highlandsun. with floppys you could and forget about it, same with cd-r's right now. and maybe in the future dvd-r's, but right now there are to many legacy systems that have only a cd-rom unit. if the data only hi-md unit is cheap, the media even cheaper, and you can get it in boxes of 10 or more allmost anywhere then i think the uptake may well get a boost. cd-r's have become more or less throw-away. but cd-r's can only be written ones. a hi-md you can rewrite and even delete some files to make up space without doing a complete wipe like on a cd-rw. the thing is that hi-mds are as flexible as floppys but with a greater storage.
  18. the design may be cloned but im guessing the hardware and firmware is buffalo made...
  19. hmm, that buffalo unit have me a bit worryed. the more i look into it the more it seems to be a japan only item. and it looks to be damn hard to get hold of where i live, norway...
  20. i think the reason that they write panther is that its the latest official os from apple, and the latest they have been able to test it on. i fail to see how apple can mess up the application compatiblity that badly as tiger is basicly just a updated panther.
  21. yes, its realy sonicstage thats the problem with atrac files as its the only program that can play them. still, i wonder what they are doing with the pcm files. if they are doing something similar then atleast mp3 and pcm transfers should be teoreticaly doable outside of sonicstage. and with 128-bit mp3 recording for stuff that dont need high quality and pcm for the rest you dont realy need atrac unless your using it to get some extra recordingtime out of your md's...
  22. hang on, native *.mp3 playback? gimme gimme gimme! so i can then just drag-n-drop files onto the media, stuff it in the player and boom i have playback? how the hell did sony let this slip past em? this sucker will outsell their players by a longshot! as for 11mbps transfer, thats what usb1 can handle at peak performance... heh, it would be nice if they made a internal variant on that storage device that could either use floppy or (s)ata cable. that way i could replace those old floppy drives
  23. that depends on how you use the camera. for the picture taking itself is fast, just like any other camera. what takes time is the writing to disk bit. but if your like most other happy snappers the time should not be that much more diffrent to say a flashbulb charging... as for bulky, its hard to tell from the images but i dont think that is much more then a slightly fat md player given how small they can make a digital camera if they remove any optical zoom abiility and the mechanical parts needed for that... still, like the article say, the electronics needed for the image prosessing takes up a nice bit of area. thats why they have removed the recording ability i think i will find a device like this useable, now if only sony can get working on some massproduction of hi-md media!
  24. that realy depends. and the smaller a hdd drive becomes, the less storage i have. but if your comparing storage of one hdd (like say a ipod mini) with a hi-md in combo with the equivalent storage in hi-md disks then the bulk of disks is bigger, yes...
