Is the Hiss causes by the amp though?
-
What do you think they have. Low Definition Analog Amps?
-
I think I'd go to Cowon mainly because its UMS.
-
LOL I was wondering. I thought there used to be a lot more.
-
Theres actually not that many HiMD units on eBay. Losts of older MD and Net MD and loads of disks, but hardly any HiMD.
-
Can you give some info on which amps are in which players HiMD vs HD/Flash players?
-
Well it can only be done in real time, ie you have to playback the LP and record it. Personally I don't bother with declicking, noise reduction I don't like the result. How do HiMD units have BETTER playback?
-
As a recorder I think theres still a market for MD/HiMD. It maybe that in the future we'll have to order everything from Japan but I think there'll still be units around. I use HiMD to record old cassettes etc. I convert the recordings to WAV. Then edit them as I want, and then re encode them to the format I want. I use a cassette adapter to my car stereo and it works well enough. I reckon the models with the control stick are easer to use in the car.

Why do you run a server OS?

"...My brother Justin loved his 20 gig 4th generation ipod until he dropped it at the gym one day..." A HD player isn't designed to be used in a gym. You use a flash player or MD for that. "The technique involves domestic violence " That because he didn't want to pay Apple to do it so he did it himself, and saved himself some money. Which is fair enough. Slapping is only nudging a loose connection. Continual slapping is likely damage the drive or some other component.

As a side issue many people on Head-Fi use their iPods with a line out on the portable dock to an portable amp and load up their iPod with AAC lossless. The current 5G has a much improved headphone out aswell, so many would forgoe the amp. A purist would always use an amp though. The whole point of capacity it not about how much you can carry so much as you never need to think or spending time choosing what music to bring with you. You always have what you want with you. You have one small unit to carry. A HiMD and even a couple of discs is bigger than an iPod. I don't see the point of arguing about it though. The iPod has its own market that the MD never captured even at the height of its popularity. MD has ALWAYS been a niche market. It simply has never caught the interest of the general public outside of Japan.

What do you use to transcode from Apples AAC to ATRAC? Wy do you think HD crumble from heavy use? Oldest HD I have is over 10yrs old and still going strong. On the iPod, as on other DAP's when you play a song it caches it in memory, it doesn't use the HD 100% of the time. Why would you lose all your music. Its still on the computer you connect the iPod to. The iPod has been around 5yrs and I've haven't heard about HD crumbling. The big issue used to be the batteries but you can replace them. I'm not a big fan of iPods in general but the majority of iPod complaints on this forum make little sense.

Sony Hi-MD RH1 (Black) pictorial

Out of curiosity what camera/lense did you use and what kind of lighting? -
Thanks. Much appreciated! The new remote makes the HiMD much more usable as a player! I never liked using it as player before.

Well I'm in the process of converting my cassettes to MP3. Only my favorite ones though. Most of them are degraded too badly to keep. I don't have a problem with keeping data on HD's. You just have do a backup on a regular basis. Thats normal with all computers.

Nice Photos. I don't really understand the logic to the of layout of the buttons on the RH1 but I think it looks great. -
Just picked up a MC38EL on ebay for my NH700. I don't have a manual for it. Any know where I can get a manual or a link to where I can find out all the options etc. I did a quick search on Sonys website but didn't find anyhting yet.

Trancoding results vary a lot, depending on the qulaity of the source and the type of music. Some tracks aren't too bad, but some are terrible. Thats 256 going to 160~192kps. You get the dreaded swirly sound.
-
Some want to carry all the music they love, hence a HD DAP. In the HD world you can make a backup.

Are you comparing the life of Flash memory to batteries?
-
You CAN use a iPod to get decent SQ or you can use it to get bad SQ. Thats up to the person using it. Like you can have a badly encoded low quality 320kps MP3 which is worse than a well encoded 192kps file. So apologies if I'm dismissive of vague sweeping generalisations. In one hand you desire MD to be come more popular, yet you completely fail to grasp the key features that make the iPod popular. iPod use is increasing, and a lot of that is repeat customers who like the product and buy the newer model. Whereas lots of people by MD/HiMD hate it and switch to an iPod. Thats not just marketing. The RH1 is big improvement over whats gone before, for MD users. But its a very different product to an iPod, it simply lacks the features and ease of use that they want. That those feature are not of interest to you doesn't make those features of no value.

No offense you're missing the point, but proving mine, that most people who complain about iPods don't get why they are so successful. Its not only marketing. They have some excellent features that people want! ID3 DB isn't whats clever. Dynamic/smart playlists and clever synchronisation is. KISS usually works very well. Especially when people have busy lives or are not gadget freaks, they don't want extra complication. That why the iPod/iTunes really works. Its KISS. The Shuffle is a perfect example of this. A lot of people only ever listen to their MP3 players on Shuffle. So Apple made the simplist player ever to target that kinda user. As a bonus the Shuffle has one of the best SQ of any MP3 player. Probably by accident rather then design as it has much better SQ then the other iPods that preceeded it. So you'll find a lot of Audiophiles use it as their minimalist/disposable rig. Simple ergonomic buttons than you can use in the gym, or through clothing etc. I have PCDP's, MD/HiMD, HD DAPS and a Shuffle (till it broke). The Shuffle is/was the best sounding and my favourite of them all.
