Why bother banging on about SQ if you are going to transcode all your music? The people who critise the iPod are people are usually not its intended market, or who don't understand the balance of good and bad points about it. Write it off as a device for joe soap if you want, but you'd be wiser to find out why many audiophiles use it, and how they get around the bad points. ID3 database is not a lazy feature. You need it to have dynamic/smart playlists and clever syncronisation. its actually one of the clever killer features of iPod/iTunes. DRM is a common problem for all devicest that have that feature. Thats not an argument against iPods but against DRM in general. You don't HAVE to use it with your player. You don't even HAVE to use iTunes with an iPod. Sony has given up with HiMD as a competitor for iPod. Indeed MD has never really caught on even before MP3 became widespread. Sony HD players are fighting that battle at the moment. They also have learnt nothing from the success of iTunes/iPod and suffer from the same weak Sony software that MD did. They simply won't compete with the iPod doing that. The RH1 is a great recorder. A great player though?

Personally I like that they are making a high end unit. However I agree with others that a cheaper AA powered unit would be worthwhile. As for the remote. I often bring a load of tracks with me to check out. Classical stuff and stuff on Free complation CD's etc. Its nice to be able to hear a track you don't know, but like, and then look down and see what it, which artist etc. Personally I just like a nice big display with lots of info. The Cowon iAudio remotes are a good example of getting lots of info on a small display, on unit or remote. A Backlight is essential too. I wish people would stop slagging off the iPod. Yes it has its faults, but it does a lot of things well, and for the average user (not the majoirty of MD users) its a great player. Sony and MD users should learn from what the iPod does well, not moan about the bad points. The best parts of iPod/iTunes mated with the best parts of MD/HiMD/SS would be fantastic.

While I was using MP3's as source and expected some artifacting from transcoding, the results were worse than I expected. The transcoding from 132>>292 would explain why. Didn't realise it did that. i thought it was a transfer of LP2. Would also explain why it took longer than expected. Pity.

Well its a dual Xeon 2.4Ghz machine and it wasn't doing much at the time. I was transcoding the files aswell, but it wasn't waiting on the transcoding. It had them all transcoded before the first one had transferred. Maybe I'm just too used to USB2 transfer speeds.
-
I do as Hola. Only use it for transfer not as a library. Its simply too slow for a large library.
-
Cheers I thought I saw it before but I forgot to search. One of those days, brain not in gear.

USB2 or USB1 won't make a difference. The HiMD itself can't write to the MD at USB1 speeds never mind USB2. I was using USB2 though.

Was trying to create MD's on my HiMD. I format the MD as a NetMD then transferred tracks at SP or LP2 as it actually is (was this fixed in SS4?). However it takes forever. I thik it would have been almost as quick to record realtime. Any thoughts from those who does this on a regular basis?

If you want to group a bumch of tracks from different albums together as a Compilation in SS how do you do it?
-
My concern would be exactly who is making money from allofmp3.com.

No sign of it here in Ireland. To be honest theres only end of stock items in the shops here.

Funky looking unit. Never heard of it before. Whats the difference between the EH1 and EH50? Where did you get the EH50 BTW? Is HiMD/MD popular in HK?

On reflection I see your point. The decoders obviously in firmware. As long as its not been hardcoded for only specific bitrates you'd thing any bitrate would be possible. While I don't see the need for a huge range of bitrates, its an added "feature" that theres no good reason not to take advantage of. While a player/recorder with cheap 2GB disks, lossless and gapless would great. I think they'd be better putting recording functionality on their HD players though.

I guess its limted by whats on whats on the HiMD firmware.

I've a few units. But all 2nd hand and I only use them for recording. So I reckon no.

HiMD Rendered on a Toshiba Laptoi (Net-MD)

I used to use a Creative MP3+ that I got a few years back for $40 that has optical connections. My Laptop sound quality was very poor, and Mp3+ analog out was better. But thats not that much of an issue if you are just using the optical connections. http://us.creative.com/products/product.as...207&product=154 Theres a Live version now thats better. The Audigy2NX is better but needs AC power. The Mp3+ and Live are USB powered. If I was buying something now I'd get this. http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/audioadvantage/ -
Can't imagine they'll sell to many. Our local Sony stores sell the NH1 for the equivalent of almost $500. As you can imagine they don't sell too many. Anyone thats interested in MD shops around on the net.

Its heard you bad mouting it...

Play Sony MZ-NHF800 to a HiFi Amp.

I use my MH700 via its earphone to an amp/midi system with no problems what so ever. Can't imagine why you'd have a problem with volume though. -
I've never heard of an application conflicting with it. Did you try your firewall?
-
I thought the default for the CDDB in SS was to use your browser settings. I assume that they would be ok.
-
I don't get the whole collecting MD's thing. But they are pretty. Nice photos.
-
I suspect its your firewall blocking it. I can have problems through the firewall at work. I reckon it just times out. Mind you other tagging software seems to be slow through the same firewall so I can't blame SS. At home SS works perfectly. To be honest I've never really had a problem with it. Experiment with your firewall. Turn it off for a minute and see if SS works ok. Don't forget to turn it back on through. Then find out how to reconfigure your AV/Firewall software. I don't really have a problem using SS. Its not exactly a complex application, but agreed it has, and has had way too many bugs for such a simple app. I can only assume there are little or no resources assigned to it. Pity. But it gets the job done.

Perhaps they have added "magic" to transcoding?
