  1. no pain, all gain added quite some extra hours of recording at a crucial moment already, and at a relatively low extra-space-needed cost I mean...most of the complaints are about the bulkyness of the addon (no biggy, it's only an inch extra) or about the fragile attaching-points...but then again you shouldn't be throwing your MD around at any time... or the fact that it doesn't really power your MD, but actually just charges the gumstick battery a little bit... which isn't a problem at all, as long as you maintain the full potential of your internal battery by going through a couple of full charge/full recharge cycles (without the addon of course) once in a while... so hope you will enjoy your Hi-MD
  2. I used my Senn HD497 'phones which are very enjoyable otherwise...but even as I often thought I heard a difference...in the end I almost had 50/50% with the ABX test (really) so, seems that my ears are numbed enough by loud shows to enjoy compressed music but I have tried it as a refference with a very demanding "The Mars Volta"-bit in Hi-sp vs (SS3.1) fake sp and I nailed it big time... so at least we can establish that the difference between uncompressed/real sp is smaller (in my ears) than between Hi-sp/fake sp...but then again, most of you guys already knew this I guess
  3. there seems to be a difference between the HD-preamp of the 1st gen and the digit-HD-preamp of the 2nd gen... but ppl here on MDCF can't seem to agree on which one's best... I only know tha NH900...but that one sounds just fine to me the battery is really the biggest drawback of the NH1, plus the fact that you really need the remote to access all functions (only Hi-MD model that has this, as far as I know) and the fact that you really need the cradle to charge and connect to computer (I believe, again, correct me if wrong)... it wasn't really any competition as far as I was concerned...really wanted the easy replacable/upgradable battery and the AA-addon for extended use is quite handy when recording long stretches, so the NH900 was the only option for me yeah, I like 'em too, especially the RH10, but I have the same worries about scratches and couldn't give a toss about MP3...but I really like the OLED on the RH10 (only Hi-MD with lit LCD on the player as far as I know, dunno about the NH1)...but then I would buy import from Japan, as they come with a much better remote (with lcd) and a charging cradle (meh, but rather have it and not use it then don't have it and want it) ah, but then again it isn't less able (except for the oled and MP3-playback ) than the newer/higher models... so if you can find a good deal on the NH900...go for it, if not, consider importing a RH10 from Japan... or just go with whatever your impulses make you buy...as there (luckily) isn't a 'bad' Hi-MD-model out there (just my humble opinion of course)
  4. if you would like to continue to use your 'stacks of MP3s' you have amassed while using an MP3 player, go for the second generation of Hi-MD's (RH710, RH910, RH10) watch out for the 'D' models (supposedly there is an RH710D around) as it's a download only model (no live recording!) unless you don't care about recording at all... (but then you should ask yourself if Hi-MD or MD is the best solution for you anyway) and of the DHCP10 or something of that sort which is a nice gadget (with a pretty low res digital camera) but isn't otherwise Hi-MD-model with full capaciies (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) but for the rest it's more taste and budget than rationality in my opinion... so welcome to MDCF, and I hope you can make up your mind...as Hi-MD-bliss (and SonicStage aggrevation) is (/are) waiting for you! PS: if you couldn't care less about MP3s (as I do ), the first gen are still very good, even compared with the newer ones (I'm pretty happy with my NH900)...but now I've narrowed your choices down by eh two specific models...no three, watch out for the NH600D too
  5. there are a lot of ppl that are nearly experts on the subject of live recording with the RH-10 (like mrsoul, who has already written a lot of usefull stuff about it), but it would be a lot simpler if you would just scan/check/read the live recording forum section first and then post any remaining questions in a new thread in that section, as the real experts don't hang out at the software discussion/faq's and probably aren't scanning a topic named "using mac osx"... but to put you at ease at least a little bit... the RH10 records in PCM (which is wav) too... and there are still ppl who claim that SonicStage (the ONLY software to allow Hi-MD recording uploading at this moment!) works on virtual PC, but otherwise, indeed, the analogue line out/in technique is the only one I see... and... but at this point I noticed you clearly have never heard of Sony before as they will copyprotect your own recordings! at least they did untill SS3.x...since then they installed an atrac->wav converter for your own recordings...so that now only your recordings in atrac(3/3+ and PCM I believe) are owned by Sony, you are free to use your wav-converted-versions as you like
  6. glad to hear things have worked out, enjoy your MD! this could be interesting for the ppl who know something about software (like the one that created the MDCF-standalone-installer perhaps) to compare the German version to others versions to find the difference...and perhaps develop a reparation plugin or something... (and get paid big bucks by Sony for repairing their buggy software ...never gonna happen though ) hope other ppl will be helped by your solution
  7. but you still have to update your signature
  8. indeed and so is (Hi-)MD, but haven't you (or Sony?) noticed that both niches could be for a great extent be the same? lets see... Macs are very popular with audio-afficionados and low(er) budget visual artists (or filmmakers, whichever you prefer)... and Hi-MD is very popular with (stealth) music tapers - don't they just love audio - and recorders of other kinds of sounds (like some low budget filmsoundtracks)... hm...Sony, I think I see a (niche) market for (H)iMac-MD and the ppl in this niche have quite some bucks to spend (otherwise a good Mac would be unattainable too) and could deliver good advertising through their wares! So...for the sake of all Mac-users/lovers out there: give 'em some Mac/Hi-MD software (and when you're at it, make it better than SonicStage ) PS: I use a HP (PC) now mostly, but have grown up with Mac (used them from 1985 till 1999) and now my mom (iBook), dad (powerbook G3) and girlfriend (powerbook G4) all own some still...and to be really honest, I would return to Mac if I could!
  9. First thing to do (if you haven't done this already) is to do a CLEAN install of the latest version of SS as described here... this could cure the "no SS working any more"-problem About the recordings: as you know, in SS3.1 there is an option to keep uploaded tracks on the disc... go to: tools -> options -> transfer -> (device/media) Hi-MD -> transfer settings -> advanced -> import settings: check the "leave the track on disc"-checkbox. Make sure you have checked this, as it should prevent tracks disappearing from the discs in the future... As for the recording you can't upload for the moment... the only way is recording them analog (or digital if your soundcard allows it) in realtime... hope this helps and good luck
  10. could be the VBR(variable Bit Rate)-bug in SS... try searching MDCF for "VBR" Or "Variable Bit Rate"... this problem has been discussed in great lenghts
  11. if you want a lot of answers, do not post new questions in existing threads if they are on (even only slightly) different topics... and if you use the search engine on MDCF with "codecs" as the query, you'd find this thread which discusses your problem and a possible answer (install WMP10, then install SS3.1)
  12. welcome to MDCF Lemmy, but please try not to post new questions about other topics (even if they're related) in existing threads... this will make more ppl see your question and at the same time lets the existing thread stay on topic... but to get an answer to your question... try this thread (see what a little searching can come up with )
  13. good idea if you also build a music library, while loading music to your MD (i.e. keep the music you tranfer also in playlists/albums on the pc to be played in and managed through SS) you could back this up usig the SS-library backup tool...but since you own all cd's and it isn't the pc you intend to use, it could take less effort to just forget about this and re-import the cd's (on the right pc eventually) so just forget about this paragraph! you could run the SS3.1 upgrade link in the right language found here or you could try the MDCF offline installer (though remember it's only a beta version and some problems have been reported) and if you really want to be sure... do a clean install as described here I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.3 to 3.0 to 3.1 using the online updaters (and without ever backing up my library, which isn't a good example ) and it all worked as a charm... so, I would give the online updater version a try without any preparations and if it goes wrong, you can always perform a clean install as described... hope it works out... and that it will eventually work on your own pc too good luck!
  14. try to upgrade to SS3.1 on the server pc...just to see wether it's the 3.x version that is causing the problems
  15. MP3 playing without conversion to an Atrac type is 2nd gen only. MP3 conversion to Atrac and then transfering to player works for all Hi-MD models... but will result in (according to some: slight; and according to others: unbarable) quality loss... If you can access the original source (and if this is a CD or a wav or any other non-lossy compression) it is better to convert this directly to an Atrac of your choice (and forget about MP3 diversions at all)... so no MP3 with your NH1 I'm afraid. [edit] the plugin you found only allows SS to rip your CDs to MP3 in your library... it won't alter the way your MD-player behaves at all... and (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe this MP3-plugin comes built in SS3.x[/edit]
  16. yep... gives memory effect, which can be removed by going through a couple of full charge/full recharge cycles... and more info on battery behaviour can be found @ this page
  17. kurisu, after having read a lot of "help me" posts recently...almost all of which lacked any mention of their basic specs I do believe it would be better if you could make the "Rules for support-related topics in this forum - PLEASE READ." line a bit bigger and stand out a bit more it must be tiresome to write: "please post your specs according the rules" all the time
  18. welcome to these forums (MDCF), have you already uploaded these (same) tracks before? Sony (and SS) allow uploading only once... if so, try connecting your player and playing the recordings through SS and capturing/recording it with Totalrecorder or (free) Audacity, as described here under "dex's OPTIONS FOR PARANOID USERS" which could aptly be called "they way to saved botched SS uploads" too. If you haven't... record something else (disposable) on another disc and see whether you can upload those... and just to make sure ppl who want to help know the complete situation: please post your specifications as stated in the rulesrules... thanks and good luck
  19. I've looked into these mics myself, as I was curious to what I had just recommended and I'm still looking for some decent mics myself... they seem prety good (20Hz-20kHz; S/N ratio 61 db; channel balance <1db; and can be bought with a battery box/-20db (attenuator ? ) w -300Hz bass cutoff-switch and batt-life indicator...) The normal or pop version (-6db sensitivity) cost about €219 (with the batt box and €149 without) and I can buy 'em within the EU so that should save on transport/taxes Seems they also have a special 'rock'-edition that comes only with the batt box-option for about €299 and are -20db less sensitive (for those extra loud tapers!) they are actually designed as in ear/binaural but also clip-on mics...with very nice finishing touches (r/l-coloured earplugs, cable cord coil,...) so they've got comparable specs as the $249 SP-CMC-8 premium mics (I guess) but with a batt-box and a few extras for about the same price... I'm going to search a bit for a dealer for these babies within my neighbourhood (of course no Belgian dealer, would have been way too easy! ) and think I will invest the little more (but as I've showed above... even the BMC-2s and a batt box would set me back almost $175 so not THAT much more...) and hope they're as good as they look... ...but all this will have to wait a little bit... as I really should be writing my masters thesis and not recording shows (or hanging around on MDCF all the time!)
  20. and just for the heck of it ... I once tried to figure out what it would cost me to buy SP-BMC-2s and the SP-SPSB-6 battery box (with bass-rolloff) from Sound-Pros SP-BMC-2= $39.0 SP-SPSB-6 = $69.0 transport = $31.97 Total = $139.97 Import rights (2,5%) = $3.49925 BTW (TAV) (=21% of total+import rights) = $30.1285425 so that would make in total = $173.5977925 ~ $173.60 (in stead of $108 originally) I don't know whether you guys think that this is normal? but I surely think it stuffs bigtime PS: Belgian customs is quite strict and SoundPros won't mark parcels as gifts or stuff, so no chance to get out of paying this extra cash
  21. poor sods that are stuck with so much useless SS2 cds...but shouldn't somebody add a warning to this auction that a newer version can be downloaded for free... before these forums are flooded with even poorer sods that have bought such a cd, stumble upon MDCF and see a standalone SS3.1 version free to download...and start raising hell @ the wrong place
  22. glad to see that you figured it out (sorry you had to do this all by yourself ) but you see, there are a lot of ppl around with better knowledge than me, so searching MDCF is always a very good idea... enjoy your MD-experience! and see you around on the forums
  23. binaural mics (if pointed to the sides, with a seperator (like your head) in between 'em; as they are actually intended to be used! ) recreate the sound the way you heard it when played through headphones... but if you were to point the mics more foreward and just separating 'em a couple of centimeters (or inches ) without need for a fysical separator between them (for example on you shoulders or shirt collar), they will create a very nice stereo image that superbly suits playback through speakers... but I must agree with Deadwing... it's annoying that in Europe (or the UK) you can't buy any decently priced binaural stereo mics (like the BMC-2s, which actually double in price when imported )... though you could check out these german mic manufactorers 'cause I have heard they make some nice but quite expensive mics
  24. if you really don't trust 3.x (has only been good to me though), why not upgrade to 2.3 at least (with a back-up ofcourse)... 'cause this is the first version not to trash uploadings and not to feature a few other known bugs (and it's the version almost all ppl with 3.x troubles you're referring to, used and returned to) still, why not try the newest version, and if it's really as crappy as you think... just revert to whatever you want? (if you would follow the "clean install" procedure presented here, upgrading and even a return to your old setup shouldn't really give any troubles, as long as you remember to back-up your library) still whatever you choose...good luck PS: now you say but you did start this thread 'cause SS wasn't really working the way you wanted it to, I believe (used way too much memory)... so has this changed since then?
  25. lol...the problem is not that you'd be "braking any rules"... the problem is that with too little information, the real wise men of MDCF (no, not me! ) wouldn't know where to begin with searching for a solution...so thanks for editing your post. and to be a bit annoying ( no actually to see if I could help) was this your first installation of (any version of) SonicStage? Any other Sony software installed? Do you have an older library with atrac(plus) or otherwise sony-copyright-protected (DRM'ed) songs? Have you tried a clean install (as described here) (carefull, if you haven't backed-up your sony-protected library, you will loose this!) Have you read all software faqs whether this problem or something similar has already popped up/been solved? wish I could be more helpfull, but I'm rather limited in my software knowledge good luck
