  1. no mac support unless through virtual PC with an NH700 you will have to convert MP3's to Atrac (or PCM) before downloading them, you can do this in SonicStage there is no other software available (except SimpleBurner: PC only and for copying CD's to MD) about Mac gripes, just search the forums a bit, there are a lot of disgruntled Mac-users here
  2. are you recording in MD (not Hi-MD mode) perhaps?
  3. yes...carefully read the SOftware/FAQ's (at least all the pinned threads and the warning above)
  4. darn Jonny, you clearly have been thinking about this and by the way: I couldn't agree more! greetings, Volta
  5. it is a USB-data storage device that uses Hi-MD discs, but actually allows music to be downloaded, for playback in a Hi-MD/MD-device (or in the HMD1 itself, through the PC-speakers) I don't think lack of SP support is a copyright issue, as the 1st and 2nd gen Hi-MD players allow PCM (which is really 100% quality, bit for bit the same as on CD) recording, downloading and uploading... I do not know the real reason why they haven't put real SP-support in there, as the HMD1 proves that SS could theoretically allow real-SP transfers and as even 1st and 2nd gen can play SP back (so no hardware incompatibility there)...maybe someone with more knowledge can jump in with the real explanation now?
  6. ah, 'fear of whiping out an entire Music collection' that actually constitutes as a very good reason in my book, so sorry if I seemed a little harsh, but I hadn't heard that problem before... but then again, I'm no MP3 user thank you for those kind words ... MDCF is actually one of the most polite and helpfull forums I've come across until now... greetings, Volta
  7. just buy one of these things, they can download in real SP hm, I'm afraid it won't happen...ever... at least not until Sony opens up
  8. hm, it does say so I actually guess Sony believes that NetMD-players (or aren't they even included in Network-Walkman?) allow digital uploading (is this true? I thought not, but I never owned a NetMD...) so: - if you recorded the discs with an MD...use the MD-analog/(digital?)-realtime method - if you recorded the discs with a Net-MD...use the MD-analog/(digital?)-realtime method and complain to Sony that they are giving very wrong info - if you recorded the discs with a Hi-MD...well, if it would have worked the SS-digital way, you wouldn't have put up a post, right... so use the MD-analog/(digital?)-realtime method and complain to Sony that they are giving very wrong info, 'cause that would prove that discs recorded in MD-mode aren't uploadable with SS (which I actually just assumed, but never checked), and their info doesn't say this good luck and give my greetings to the Sony-customer service will you...
  9. since when do we believe what Sony says about Sony-software? The programmers have absolutely no knowledge of what the hardware can and needs to do...while the hardware division doesn't realize that the software cripples any straightforward use of the machines as intended... and...there is no other program, none, whatsoever, at all, ...
  10. yes, I have an idea...as mentioned in all the FAQ's (like right here, the bold text under 'limitations')...it is NOT possible to upload old recordings with SS, even when using a Hi-MD player. read this pinned (= very important) thread to learn about the one and only possible method to get your old recording to PC...and yes, you have to treat your Hi-MD as a (Net)MD when transferring older recordings, so don't click on 'if you have Hi-MD, use this thread', just follow the instructions in this thread
  11. even the good old free audacity lets you record streaming audio from the internal stereo mixer, so that shouldn't be so hard... but I'm afraid I'm not able to do it, as 3pm mountain time probaly means night time for me! (haven't really checked) I would be interested in a webcast version of your show, as I recall, you like The Mars Volta, Maynard and DFA1979 and stuff...can't go wrong then!
  12. has even been reported that anything under 48kbps failes... greetings, Volta
  13. both of you, try using the search function of these forums (or scan through the Software/FAQ's pages a bit)... as I'm 100% sure that this problem has been adressed (and solved) before! give it a shot...'cause as you know, knowledge doesn't come for free (if -after some serious searching!- you still have questions, I'm also 100% sure that someone here on MDCF will try to help you! they just don't react when the same question is posed again and again...) good luck and greetings, Volta
  14. nope, for a lot of the ppl here on MDCF (including me) the recording capacities (definitly since the coming of Hi-MD) make the MD-format rise above all of the other options... you could even find quite some MD-users that also have a HD-player for listening-only ease, but if you can live with SonicStage, the 2nd gen Hi-MD's offer MP3 playback nowadays... but as has been said before... for 'listening only'-use, MD might not be the best option for you...
  15. thanks for the fast action Ishi... keep up the good mod'ing
  16. zulu, please don't ask unrelated questions in an existing thread... first of all, who would find it here? second, it's not nice to hijack someone elses thread... and third...look around or search a bit on the forums... (in the Software/faq's especially) as there are already A LOT of threads on SS not recognising a (Hi-)MD... a bit of efort will get you a long way greetings, Volta
  17. indeed, as I already mentioned twice... the method of combining can differ...as I prefer Dex's way of uploading in tracks, combining inSS (hasn't produced double bits yet) and converting to wav, editing, adding trackmark (or cutting it up ) then reimporting in SS, downloading to MD... but it seems this guy just doesn't understand that MD is a REwritable medium... just download the tracked version to MD and keep a long/combined version on the PC! I would say, DylanGarret, just read this thread again, quietly from the beginning...the sollution (a number of them!) has been presented reverting back to an elder version of SS is completely on your own risk, and don't forget to back-up your library, otherwise, it could be even more troubles...and btw, this won't let you upload recordings again that you have already uploaded before...so, it won't help in that way
  18. hm, but one remark, you can't record with a mic in MP3. MP3 is a playback-only format on Hi-MD... but there are a lot of other formats (types of atrac3/atrac3+ and PCM) available... and Hi-SP would give you more time/disc hm, I'm sorry but 'wrong'... That would be the logical answer, but (up until SS2.3 at least, haven't checked this with later versions yet, but I don't think it has changed) Sony would copyprotect your own recordings, making them uploadable to PC only once, like Kate feared...and even worse, SS would delete the track on the disc when you tried importing a second time... BUT, since SS3.0 and up, you can convert your uploaded recordings immediately to wav, which means that they can be edited and whatever without problems, and that they are DRM-(the copyprotect-stuff)-free! and Kate, if you make sure that you check one option in SS (tools/options/transfer/Hi-MD->transfer settings/advanced/import settings->'leave the track on the disc') and clearly mark the disc as upnloaded (to prevent yourself from inadvertedly trying to upnload it again) than there never will be a completely lost track anymore, as you would still have the tracks on the disc... and you could still use the realtime analog line in or the realtime digital usb-SS-total recorder methods (explained here) to get them onto your PC... greetings, Volta
  19. no problems...always glad if I can help (like most ppl here on MDCF!)
  20. haha, had to look up 'concise', but...yes indeed!
  21. hmm, thought I had... so whether you can put an MP3 on your MD is actually a question whether you can convert that MP3 to another format (Atrac or PCM) or not...as your (1st gen) Hi-MD WON'T play MP3's at all, they will always have to be converted but I see you get this bit... so that leaves us with your question... to be honest, I don't know...I simply don't know how copy protected MP3's work, as I don't use MP3... but I guess you could alway try: you could use an audio-editing program and try to import an MP3 and save it as wav, or you could use a fine little program that simplifies this conversion (can be found in the downloads sction, but the name escapes me right now) or you could just throw some MP3's that you doubt into SS and see what happens... as you already have installed the software and have a Hi-MD, why all these questions...just try and learn a bit...no harm can come from that No, it is Atrac or PCM (whichever you chose to convert to). and further, what do you mean with music recorded on the MD? MP3's you downloaded or music recorded with a mic? The former... I would say, use the original MP3 instead for further actions... the latter, you can save your own recordings as wav in SS (3.0 at least) and convert that into whatever you want, or you could use Marcnet's Hi-MD renderer (see the downloads section again) which allows to convert atrac to MP3 I believe... but again, as you have already bought the player and have the software installed... why not try something before you come here and expect ppl to spend their time trying to answer these questions, most of which you could easily have tested yourself... if after testing some questions remain, ppl would be much more willing to help you with 'em...
  22. I'm sorry to hear the problem isn't fixed yet, was kinda hoping the SS-combine way avoided the segment-repetition, but it seems this is just another thing SS doens't do (but I must say, I personally haven't noticed these things before... but nowadays, I mostly record in Hi-SP with trackmark set at 60 minutes or none at all) hm, I see your point...but I don't see the problem. It would require an additional step, but...you can cater to both wishes without any problem... you record your show without any trackmarks or you erase the marks on the machine (while paused, search the beginning of a 'track' and 'mark' appears on he screen, press T-mark button and the trackmark is gone, without doubling anything hopefully) -> upload to SS and save as wav (or convert with Marcnet's Hi-MD renderer), this removes all DRM/copyright issues too -> @ this stage you have 2 options: A) use a sound editing program to cut the one wav into 'tracks' (you have to cut at a certain number of frames or right after a frame or something like it, something to do with the 44.1Hz standard for CDs, otherwise it will leave gaps when burned to CD or played on Hi-MD, as this last uses one the 44.1Hz standard too, but ask someone with decent knowledge about this as I only vaguely remember this from reading it here on MDCF somewhere) B ) or use something like Nero-burner to create a cd(-image on your PC) with trackmarks added (Nero correctly puts 'em in so they won't gap) -> import the wav-tracks created via (A) into SS and download to Hi-MD OR use SimpleBurner to download the CD or the CD-image created in (B ) to Hi-MD -> you now have your set in wav (whole or tracked up) on your PC and an MD with the set all tracked up (i.e. both wished fulfilled) Is there sound degradation? No or very very little, at least if you record in a high quality (Hi-SP or PCM), which you should... the conversion to wav doesn't degrade anything, so the set on your PC is the same quality as the recording. The transfer back to Hi-MD (unless in PCM in SB) converts to a 'lossy format' (any Atrac version) but again, if you stick with higher quality (Hi-SP would be my recommendation) the loss compared to the originally recorded MD, wouldn't be noticeable! hope this helps to solve the dilemma, Volta
  23. Welcome to these forums, ...but I do have a slight problem with your theory ... what makes you believe that ALL Euro NH900's are unrepairably broken? Never occured to you that it could have been just some machines and that (if you find an adequate technician) it can be repaired quite easily? I'm the proud owner of a NH900, and I have experienced the 'button malfunctions and inaccessible menu' problems (see this thread or this thread and even this one) and after being advised so by the helpfull ppl here on MDCF, I took my NH900 in for repairs and after some time...it returned to me, repaired (for free naturally), and has worked like a charm ever since! And yes, it was repaired, not secretly switched with another (non-Euro) NH900, I have checked the serial numbers...and I refuse to believe Sony would falsify serial numbers to cover the traces of their big Euro-NH900 conspiracy... ok, lets face it...you bought an NH900 at a time they were still quite expensive (I hope, otherwise, I would say: "be happy like Matrulesok or buy another one, but stop whining..." ) and now you see the 2nd generation players that support MP3( ...drool...) but either you don't have the money, or don't want to spend it to get such a machine... so now you figured, hey...maybe I can get one for free... you could always try, but check this thread, first, as this actually gives you a real reason to get an exchange/upgrade to 2nd gen, and the experiences of a user who has succedeed in doing this... but for me personally... I couldn't care less about 2nd gen Hi-MD, ok, I like the OLED, but no LDC-remote and way to easily scratched and I don't use/have/like MP3's... I even recommend the NH900 as a model to other ppl who want to get a top Hi-MD model, but couldn't be bothered with MP3, and even after a couple of quirks, I will continue to do so... what technology is perfect? And can you ensure me that the 2nd gen are better? Seems the RH10 is missing a number of letters (haha, made a pun without even realising it) in some region settings (yes Europe too ) and editing possibilities in others (but don't mention this out loud...might be your ticket to a 3rd gen model ) wait a minute...maybe this is all part of Sony's grand scheme to quit selling stuff totally... once they stop those stinking little consumers from buying their products, they can finally do what they want HAHAHA (sorry, there was no 'mad-professor smily) ... or could it just be that the Hi-MD technology, even though it has already shown great potential, is still being developed... we are talking about 1st and 2nd gen players based on a completely new technology... *edit: sorry if I appear to be ranting or even flaming...but I don't really react well to unfounded conspiracy theories... **edit2: I paid my NH900 a hefty €250 (in december) and I still love it
  24. hm, guess you're referring to me...but I think the person who reported these problems (the duplication of beginning/ends) before actually was 'ozpeter'... you could check out this thread which is actually kinda working on the same questions (and still is active!) but hasen't really produced a definite answer... perhaps share (a short version of) your problem again there (...I'm quite sure the mods wont mind a slightly altered double post for once ) about the problem of 'not being able to edit tracks on the player anymore after you have uploaded them as one track to your PC'... even when you have uploaded them as separate tracks, you can't edit them anymore on the player, I believe... but then again, as I stated in my last post in this thread: ...so at least to me, since uploading of long tracks is relatively safe nowadays (with SS3.1) and since the built in wav-converter or Marcnet's tool allow me to convert my recordings to non-DRM'ed clean wav's... I just made a habit of backing-up these 'original' wav's as Masters (if necessary split up to fit on CD/DVD), and work on from there... as long as the one-upload-limit survives, I think it's absolutely useless to keep a master version on MD or to further edit on MD... do all you want on PC with the non-DRM'ed stuff and download to the player again if needed this would eliminate, in my view, any reason not to upload a recording with trackmarks deleted on the machine... by the way, have you tested whether a wav shows duplicated bits if you upload in tracks, combine in SS (using 'edit/combine') then convert to wav...as if it doesn't have the duplication anymore, you could keep the tracked-up disc AND have a gapless&duplicationless wav... Greeting, Volta (something )
  25. I believe that it is already possible, without any hacks or anything, to use a Hi-MD as a data drive on a mac (it was instantly recognized on my fathers G3 with os9.?, which asked wether I would like to fomat the disc, so it should also be seen/useable in OsX)... the problem is that music transferred to the disc as data isn't playable on the player and music on a playable Hi-MD, can't be copied as data to a computer and copied back onto a another Hi-MD as playable music...(not with PC nor with mac!) and this is not just a simple thing to hack...see this thread among others...
