Question about transfer of legacy recordings
greenmachine replied to Hungerdunger's topic in Minidisc
Wav normalizing isn't a completely lossless process, but close enough. You could try "wavegain". -
There's also 132 and 105kbps LP2/3 (atrac3) to fill the gap between 192 and 64kbps.

Need clarification on Hi-MD player abilities
greenmachine replied to xcalibur619's topic in Minidisc
1st gen Hi-MDs do not support direct mp3 playback, mp3s need to be transcoded to Atrac(3(+)) first, which is lossy and time-consuming. -

He should be able to format and re-use the MDs in (Net)MD mode without issues.

For LS playback you usually want a more direct sound, less room reverberations, thus move the microphones closer to (and direct them more towards) the source when recording. As a result the sound will get more monotonic, which is not really an issue for LS playback though. You can either optimize your recording for LS or HP listening or try to find a compromise if you want both. A comprpmise is a compromise though.

Play Sony MZ-NHF800 to a HiFi Amp.
greenmachine replied to mark_melb's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
If the internal EQ is disabled, even the maximum volume setting shouldn't produce any significant distortion as long as there are no low impedance headphones connected. But why not try for yourself and reduce it if necessary? -
Thanks for your input. To be honest, i didn't even consciously notice the rumbling ambient noise when recording it, but i agree it sounds weird and interesting at the same time. It was recorded inside the lion's cave in a local zoo. It must be some kind of ventilation mechanism i suppose. Shipping costs are 3.5€ (~U$4.5) worldwide, the price of the microphone itself is open to negotiation. You're welcome to PM me for details if interested.

I wouldn't disassemble them unless you know what you're doing. Until the replacement arrives, you can duplicate the intact channel or remove the defective channel via software so that you have to live with monoaural recordings for a while. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Seems like the free hosting site has gone offline. Until i find a different host, it's been moved here: http://www.geocities.com/greenmachine_audio/ email: [attachmentid=1706]

The rh910 has a (non-backlit) LCD, while the rh10's OLED glows in the dark - a matter of preference. Functionaltiy and sound quality should be comparable.
-
Although not dirt cheap yet, i'd recommend a not too expensive 1st gen Hi-MD (NH700, NHF800) for any more or less serious field recording at this point as they offer some serious advantages compared to pre-Hi-MD machines.

But not that fast, power consumption is somewhere in the 1mA range. The battery charge should last a few weeks even with quick mode on.
-
Have you deep discharged the battery? If the battery doesn't have enough voltage, the charger won't detect it.

If i remember correctly, the R70 lacks a low sensitivity switch at the mic-in. The standard model microphone is rater sensitive. It is likely that you are overloading the preamp even with attenuator. If you are recording loud, bass heavy music, there's propably no way around using a battery box connected to line-in to keep distortion at a minimum. 9V will let you use the mic's full dynamic range, 1.5V propably won't. Also, for versatility, you might want to consider a MD with selectable hi/low sens. switch.

Hints: How to Control Your Levels and Make Undistorted Recordings

Good job. There are a few links that need to be fixed though (from 'Why should I use manual levels instead of AGC?' onwards). -
How to build a Stereo Microphone and Battery Box
greenmachine replied to greenmachine's topic in Live Recording
Shotgun mics are highly directional mono mics, they work much like a tele lens - they focus on the sound directly in front of them and isolate surrounding sounds to a great part. Good for speech, but not so great for ambient recordings. -
You can't use mic-in and line-in at the same time, but you can use an external mixer connected to line-in.
-
Careful, you'll need a mp3 recorder with a built in preamp (which i believe is a rarity), otherwise you will record silence. If the mic is powered and you record directly to line-in, the signal will be very low, if not unusable.

What kind of mic is it?
