  1. Yes, shuffle mode is right there on page 44 of the RH1 manual...
  2. Generally speaking, yes, though of course the RH1 and NH1 etc. are the top 'flagship' Hi-MD models.
  3. The NH700 is the one you want. Don't go for the NH600 as this does not have a mic input jack, though some people might use the line in (+battery box?) at especially loud concerts. Definitely don't go for the NH600D as this doesn't even have a line in jack.
  4. You might be best off getting the RH1 and selling the N10, or using it as a player. Even then you could only play the old 'legacy' formats on the N10. If you want Hi-MD playback which is far more flexible it might be worth your while also getting a cheap Hi-MD player/recorder and using the RH1 as an uploader/recorder.
  5. Strange - the Rename Music Files option always works for me, and is particularly useful as many tracks by default get named with nasty underscore etc characters. In fact I'm in the middle of renaming my entire SS collection in this way... Maybe you have multiple copies, made eg. when transferring to LP2/4. If so perhaps try deleting these...
  6. Your unit's battery life will take a hit with the 1GB discs, but other than that there should, as mentioned be no qualitative difference between 1GB and any other sort of MD. Maybe someone has done or will do some ABX testing to prove/disprove the point, though.
  7. Probably a lot of the SP only units may have the problem witjh 80 min discs. None of my units from the N1 generation upwards have had this issue.
  8. Well, yes Sunshine was a bit scary scary in parts, but I've seen worse... On a cinema roll at the moment - just saw Lives of Others in German (with subtitles), about East Germany in the 1980's
  9. You can also use the Sonicstage software to erase the whole disk or tracks, whilst the RH1 is connected. This might be somewhat easier than using the fiddly buttons on the unit itself. Just go to Control-Device/Media-Initialise or highlight the tracks and hit Delete.
  10. Just saw Sunshine. Which was nice.
  11. Absolutely, bin that 'pod...
  12. A fix is unlikely to be cost-effective however. Perhaps a look around eBay for a new unit is in order, some nice bargains to be had in used/unused MDs these days...

    Which MD...

Certainly the MZ-RH1 is the ultimate MD unit to have, though if you're looking for something cheaper, and don't need to upload your old recordings, something like the older Sony MZ-RH700 Hi-MD recorder can still be found on ebay for bargain prices, often unused and by people 'upgrading' to ipods etc... A couple of weeks ago I picked up an RH700 for £30, second hand but it works perfectly.
  14. Indeed, the MZ-NH700 is a great all round choice for both listening and live recording, and still uses just one AA. EBay had quite a few of them going lately, and some go for bargain prices. So, better snap one up while you still can...
  15. A squirrel's gotta eat too, Ray, the cute bushy tailed varmints. I'm peeved that the weather in dear old blighty has just taken a serious turn for the worst (ie. was nice a spring like last week but it's freezing/snowing etc. here now)
  16. The NF810 has at least one useful thing the RH1 doesn't have - a radio remote control, and quite a good one at that. I'd keep the NF810 for that reason, and as suggested, as a backup player/recorder, especially if you have a reasonable 'legacy' SP/LP collection that you want to hang on to.
  17. One happy RH1 owner here. Only minor gripes are lack of on unit display, and no AA attachment.
  18. Many people including hi-fi reviewers have said that recording from CD to MD via analogue seems to give a vinyl-like 'warmth', especially with a high quality recorder like the JB940. Digital to digital can be a bit more cold and clinical sounding. Anyway, if you like it stick with analogue - you'll be SCMS free for ever :-)
  19. You'll need a device with a coaxial to optical converter, eg. this one: http://www.amazon.com/DAYTON-DAC-CO-COAXIA...R/dp/B0002MQGQI. The copying will still be subject to SCMS, and the source disc won't be digitally copyable if it is copy protected by SCMS. Most (or all?) CD-R copies made on PC's are free of SCMS though, and of course analogue copies are always available. There are also SCMS strippers available which usually have a built in coax-optical converter but these are very expensive.
  20. Timed radio recording is undoubtedly a great feature of decks - sadly the ones you mentioned don't offer it. It's usually the mid to high end decks that can use an external timer for this purpose, eg. MDS-JE640, 940, 780, 980 etc. Of course any deck is worthwhile for 'hi-fi' quality connection to a full-size stereo system...
  21. I definitely prefer AA-only units, due to being able to buy the batteries in any reasonable shop. Had too many non-standard batteries flake out on the road. Second choice would be a gumstick + AA attachment unit, last and definitley least an internal battery only type (eg. RH1).
  22. Yes, well those models are good for recordings, but if you want to transfer those recordings from MD to a more general format you should really get a Hi-MD recorder. In addition, Hi-MD offers CD quality (uncompressed) recording and upload.
  23. Very good, wizard, worth while seeing it if you can. Shame it flopped at the box office.. Just saw Hot Fuzz
  24. Personally, the MZ-G750 is my MDLP (non-NetMD) favourite, still going strong. These days an AM/FM radio is a must for me. The G750 pretty much does everything you need it to, especially after the R900 hack is applied, runs on an AA (another preference of mine) and is compact enough not to bulge in the pocket, if you know what I mean. Even with the 'AA hump'
  25. You'd actually need to use the digital out on a deck attached to a PC to 'transfer' it digitally. Not all decks have digital out, so check the specs before hand, eg, Sony MDS-JB980 and 780 have optical digital out. The easiest way to upload though would be using the lastest (last?) Sony MD portable, the MZ-RH1, which uses a USB cable to upload recordings directly and faster than realtime.
