  1. Just get this one: http://www.amazon.com/GP-Prismatic-Batteri...r/dp/B0002HSIEG - this is the best solution for the RH[9]10.
  2. Still, I can't believe my eyes: http://www.sonystyle.ru/sonystyle/product....product_id=2481 - it is available again! For some $310 (including shipment from Finland). I wonder. Should I buy a third one? Probably not.
  3. 1. The little red light only flashes when the unit is booting up or actually writing, and there is no way to enable it for reading. The chip actually contains an output for a reading LED (green), but that is unused. 2. There are different firmwares for the RH1. The prototype had 0.960, the first release had 1.000, and the latest ones have 1.090. The exact version may only be seen from the service mode, the firmware menu item is useless, since it only shows the first two digits (1.0 for anything from 1.000 to 1.090). AFAIK, the firmware may only be upgraded by the manufacturer, or by a certified service center, not by a user, since the unit will have to be readjusted after flashing.
  4. Start by removing the battery and power supply for an hour to see if the unit resets to normal operation.
  5. tasdisr, just get TWO of those (like I did), while it is still possible! Then we'll be able to talk with iPod'niks (yeah, that's Russian) and A800'ers about sound quality...
  6. Wow, if you've got a COMPLETE OMA file on your computer - this is more than just good news! This is real luck! So, it wasn't damaged too much, after all - just some glitch probably. Now convert it to WAV for a start.

    work with rh10?

Get a GP charger with two gumsticks included (don't remember the model number). Nothing can be better for an RH-[9]10.
  8. From what you say (and you described your problem better than most forum members), it looks like nothing can be done. Remember: what the unit does without the computer is the most that you can get. You have a CRC problem when copying directly. This can't be solved. Looks like damaged laser recording. Unfortunately, there is NO WAY to do anything like CHKDSK on a HiMD. And as for a thought about HMA - many people are thinking of that! But information is encoded at the hardware level.
  9. Same with Sony Russia: http://www.sony.ru/view/ShowProductCategor...assette+Walkman But they still have the http://www.sony.ru/view/ShowProduct.action...+Net+MD+Walkman And, lady, what do you have against cassette Walkmans? Just check this: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/DNA/Wallpapers/W_wall010.exe - this is a self-extracting archive from SONY with Walkman wallpapers. I would give half of my life for having the unit in mint condition!
  10. Yeah, and it seems that hundredloads of those are in my neighborhood (the Northwestern part of Moscow). Stopped at 35!
  11. Let's face it - this looks like the end. Remember, last year SONY announced the RH1 in March, and discontinued the second generation in May. This year they announced no HiMD unit in March (only the new flash ones), and discontinued the RH1 in May. I'll probably go out today, and buy as much HiMD blanks, as I will find in my neighborhood - HiMD blanks will follow the RH1, obviously! While legacy MD blanks will, most probably, be manufactured for years to come.
  12. This is just a suggestion actually, but it looks like the SonyStyles, which had the Malaysian model, no longer have it, while the SonyStyles, which carried the Chinese one, are still selling it - also gone as of today.
  13. I never said it is made in Japan. But it is common with SONY for many years now, not to print "Made in China" on Chinese models. The manual is the same for all models.
  14. I have two Chinese ones. See here. These are still being sold here in Russia.
  15. Looks like the Malaysian model is discontinued, but the Chinese is still produced.
  16. Well, after some three months of selling like hot cakes, the RH1 suddenly disappeared from SonyStyle.ru. But it was still available for ordering by searching for it on the web site! Now it is officially back in the "Portable audio" category, along with three (somewhat useless) CD-players: http://www.sonystyle.ru/sonystyle/category...category_id=354 - but still available for ordering - already gone today (24.05.2007)!
  17. A fake from SonyStyle with an official SONY warranty? Very interesting. If it says "Made in Malaysia" on the bottom of the unit, then it is made in Malaysia. If it says nothing, then it is made in China. This is common with SONY. Not a serious problem though. I have a 3-years old Panasonic DVD-S75, which says that it is made in China. Plays really fine. Picture quality is excellent. Sound quality is superb. Official Chinese production, as opposed to fakes, is nothing to be afraid of. On the other hand my SONY DCR-TRV460E Digital8 camcorder, which is made in Japan, is nothing to be proud of. The recording/digital section is very fine (when fed an external signal), but the optical/sensitive part is not as good as it used to be with SONY some 15 years ago. I am mostly using the camcorder for transferring my old recordings to the digital domain. I've attached an image of the bottom of one of my RH1s (the other is exactly the same). Sorry for bad quality - it is the poor TRV460E in photo mode...
  18. RH1's for most regions are made in China. And they look like that! But they sound as promised, and even better...
  19. Try setting the letter to something like G or further down the alphabet.
  20. Let's hope they'll still make some more RH1's the way they should, and not the way they make them now!!!.

    Busted RH1

I'll describe again what I've done in my particular situation. I had READ ERRORs when attempting to load legacy 80-minute discs formatted in HiMD. What it took was going to address 0124 in service mode, and decreasing the value there from 41 down to 3D (the value my RH10 had), which led to the disappearance of READ ERRORS, and then further down to 39, which changed nothing, except the laser now wears slower. The second RH1 had its original value at address 0124 set at 40, which I lowered down to 39 as soon as it arrived (after removing the Euro cap). BTW, the default (reset) value for address 0124 is only 35. As for other format discs, different addresses need to be changed, like 0121, 0122, and 0123. But in my case the values at these addresses were the same in the RH10 and in the RH1, and I had no problems with other formats.
  22. No way under any Linux. Windows emulation may help, but then again - it may not. SonicStage is a really crazy piece of software...

    Busted RH1

Well, as I've already said, I had problems with the unit reading HiMD formatted MDs the next day I bought it. This was really unpleasant. Then I remembered that I once had a Masters degree in Quantum Electronics, and immediately found out that the laser power for reading MDs was set too high. Really too high!!! Just decreased it by 200 mW, and the ERRORS disappeared. Then decreased it by 200 mW more, and that's the power settings I am using now. The whole idea is that SONY no longer adjust lasers. They just set them to TOO MUCH power, so that they die sooner.
