  1. Everyone try www.fullcompass.com chk there online catalouge , search for MD stuff and mics there , talk to Ron Vogel , he was my rep while I lived in the states. They have the HHB and a lot of other for way less
  2. Thx for helping me clarify that , I didnt know about the pad in the cable. 12 db pad would put the guy right at -11 db and the mic would be clipping , which is exactly wat I hear. TC Do you think we could forward the key elements of this discussion to RODES , maybe they would redesign the cable
  3. Audacity , ...It just ....is could be more stable , plus it will use the Core Audio effects built into the OSX Fade in , and Fade out , are perfect as is, The only thing Audacity needs is Real time preview of effects .
  4. Ok I went to the Rode page and looked at the cable , my freind was using a Preamp with his , so he wasnt using the 1/8 cable . read the specs again on the mic , On the RH1 there are two stettings for AGC one for voice and one for music, each has a different Compression curve and slight frequency layout , try using the AGC , set for music , Over at Candyrat Records.com tere is a video of Antione DuFour playing they used the NT4 to record him with ( You will see it on the stand), that is what that mic should sound like. They moved all the vids to Youtube http://www.youtube.com/candyrat Also I listened to track two again and I can hear the woman on left channel is not really in tune the nois come from the right side , the room sounds like it isnt all that big and tiled ceiling ? the white looks like swiss cheese soft tiles that you find in schools? carpeted floor, ....? their isnt any ambeince at all, When recording a Vocal Choir , it is best to use a more spread out set of mics, rather than a center mic , unless it is mono. Withe the NT4 sitting right in the middle , it is getting slammed with everything in the room, there isnt any seperation, Yes there is Audio or sound field seperation ( what you hear ) but no frequency seperation, spacing out the singers voices so they dont conflict, The effect can be minmised by raising the mic up almost to the ceilingand backing away a little further, then adjust the gain controls on the recorder. You said you had the Mic gain set to LOW, and AGC off. Try three takes ,, #1 Mic sens High, Record level manual and set the loudest peaks at -3 db #2 Mic sens Low AGC on ,type "music" #3 Mic sens high AGC on , type Music also get the mic towrd the back of the room and up about a foot away from the ceiling.
  5. All the features of these recorders were designed for a niche market , on the fly recording level etc . Right now Sony is losing a LOT of money actually on the PS3's (Playstations) they are losing about 300 dollars per unit , the cost of manufacturing is way above the market value. In my comment If you read it again you will notice i said " Scaled Down" recorder .....meaning exactly that ..no cool stuff , for example the MZ B10 does not have Rec level adjustment at all , none, zero you have mic sens but that is it, you get what you get. Sony made the mistake of hedging there bets in the Game Console market because there IS a lot of money there , but there is also a lot of competition. There up untill recently wasnt any real Competition for the MD ...it was Sony's baby. Not anymore. Panasonic , Kenwood, Audio Technica, Onkyo (very nice by the way) Panasonic has a new Business model out here in Japan that rivals the Stereo Bus. model B-100 by Sony on the price end by over 150 dollars difference. That is why I also said If you had been to Japan and see what I see every day . ........ Sony is repositioning itself , it has to It's tv market is in trouble, Panasonic and Sharp , and the new "Made in Taiwan and Korea" stuff is eating away at them . The MD market was their way of saying " Thanks Guys we are glad you like us" They have made hardly ANY money on the MD market since it began. The iPod has , it has basically made so much money that Apple could reinvent itself , ( and no I dont own an iPod , everyone here does tho) The MP3 player / recorder market is about to basically kill the MD market . ther will be MD's ,......there just wont be anything "New" MD in Japan , is becoming the Tape of the US . On the trains which carry so many friggin people a day here , you might see 1000 of them with MD , everyone else is wearing a Rio or an iPod. to the guy who said Sony Must be making money on MD ..... they dont . they never really have, broke even ...Maybe, some models the lost their shirt. The cost of tooling for forms , design , and engineering is enourmous, then the Marketing , then distribution. and the Stores have to be Willing to put them in the store ( which means Sony has to provide "Incentive") I am glad this board is here , Dont take m wrong , I loved Sony stuff since the first portable back in the 70's ( a little radio, just before the Walkman) Had the pro tape gear , I remember the day the first MD recorder came out, had a guitar student at Lighthouse electronics in Monterey Cali. and he was begging me to try it , I was Blown away, I am sitting there playing and he purposely DROPPED it on the carpeted floor while it was recording. and then play it back , I couldnt beleive it , the Holy Grail. Portable Digital Audio, I remember saying ,"Dude DAT , and Tape are dead " yesterday I was at a music store , not a pawn shop , retail store, and there was a Yamaha MTX 4R dual speed 4 Track full EQ ,DBX NR,and mixing board Tape deck , with case in practically NEW condition ............for 39 dollars , Sony isnt investing any more money into MD , they will use what they have.
  6. Wow dude , um my MZ-R 50 still works we are talking WAY back here, my MZ -R 70 lasted 6 years. The recorder is a thing of beauty and should be treated as a ( dare I say it ) Sacred object, ( not that I would worship my MD) But some due defferance and respect would be nice.... and would it be such a bad thing if you "Dropped " The White Kartel non moving part containing obect ? I shudder at the sight of glissining polished metal alloys contacting hard cobblestone, and the Goergeous screen shattering and scatterring its words of encourgement, all over the unfeeling pavement. The last fighting gasp of the Laser trying to read that last few notes of the sheet music of life, Ohhh the pain ,.....oh the Humantiy ,...... Get a cheap MP3 player , and beat the crap out of it, TC
  7. Its not the power to the mic, If you are running XLR to 1/8 stereo plug directly , is it wired correctly ? pin 1 and 3 of the XLR linked and wired to ground, pin 2 gets the red and white wires (Tip And Ring of the 1/8 plug) that is for dual mono, the same signal will go to both channels Or on a stereo setup (Two mics ) again pin 1 and 3 are ground, and pin 2 is + out for each mic, so pin 2 from left mic goes to ring of 1/8 , and pin 2 of right mic goes to Tip of 1/8 plug. Try a proper set of cables first,
  8. Sony DID make a Stereo recorder .....it is 1200 dollars http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/06/sonys-s...-playback-mp3s/ 250 dollars http://www.mobilewhack.com/sony-icd-sx77-stereo-ic-recorder/ a little more and .....http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.musiciansbuy.com/mmMBCOM/images/sony_pcmd1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.musiciansbuy.com/Sony_PCMD1_Portable_Digital_Audio_Recorder_with_Built_In_Mics_4GB_Internal_Flash_Memory_with_Free_PCMD1KIT.html&h=1200&w=682&sz=99&hl=en&start=5&tbnid=54Y4ow8Lr0p8ZM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=85&prev=/images%3Fq%3DSony%2Brecorder%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DG I found the TCD5M mk2 Cassette still being sold for 995 always wanted one of those, had the wmd- 6C loved that thing.
  9. Hello everyone . I have a Guitar student who teaches english at guess where?/............Yep Sony engineering dept. Now I cannot completely verify this , but , from what I understand one of the designers of the RH-1 said to him , he felt very strongly that the RH-1 was going to be the last major investment into the portable MD's . Sony dumped alot of money into the last three designs and the did not see the returns needed to spur the impetus to design more. Over here in Japan , the market is saturated and MD is thought of as an accessorie not a nessessity, the MP3 player market is in the middle of the biggest explosion I have ever seen . Sony IS on that bandwagon, there will probably be some new players (MD) and maybe even a scaled down recorder or two , but I think Sony is going to let this one drop. Anyone of you who has visited Japan , and know about Yodobashi Camera , or Akihabara ...you know what I am saying here. for those of you who havent been here , it is crazy man. it is a madhouse. So many friggin Gadjets you could not name them all .
  10. " Against the culture of "Sony" , capitalize it and show some respect ,lol ....luv that comment ( Moderately happy Macbook owner w/Parrallels and XP) and yes Stage will run under Parrallels .....sortof Yep disc utility , "ERASE" ..........what ..? I'm just sayin ...dont look at me like that>>>>>>>>
  11. Its the Mic... SPL levels exeed the mics capacity , and the Mics output isnt hight enough for the MD ,Vocals Have uncompressed dynamics, so the range in the peaks and valleys is a much greater range than a guitar or Piano. Also when many Voices converge you get Harmonic displacement , or an accurate representation of Pythagoras's probs when he first figured out the ratios of harmony , added another set of tones and it just didnt work . Frequencies unless accurately represented , will show up in the recording much more noticeably than just to a live listener , All the sound is being squeezed down to Two tracks hard left hard right, and not the three dimensional natural hearing. So the frequencies start to pile up on top of each other and conflict. rather than harmonize. Take a guitar and the top two strings (B and E the smallest ones) play the 5th fret of the B string and the open e string at the same time. ( that is how you tune them ) but just slight detune the e string. you will hear the wave quite clearly even at 1hz difference .But now play both strings open , you wont notice it as much , especially for the amatuer player. That is a laymans illustration sorry, but the mic without a preamp just isnt going to give you what you want.
  12. Also the polarity , I have the Microtrack 24/96 which is also USB and it power supply is 1 amp out at 5 .o volts , I tried the RH1 on its power supply , no dice ... light come on then it shuts down , I bought the Sony 12 volt to usb adapter (Cigarette plug type) and it works fine. I have a small 7 amp hour portable battery that has a shoulder strap case , It is made by Meltec http://store.yahoo.co.jp/excellent/ns-sg-1000.html sorry it's in Japanese but you get the model number so you might find it in the states, Northern Hardware , or whatever the name of the store is now might even have it in stock . Works great.
  13. Any mic that has " Phantom power 9-42 volts " written in the specs will work just fine. Most of the time the higher the input power the " Tighter" the mic will get, that is just the nature of condensers, with a slightly lower power what you get is a more natural sound instead of a " Pushed sound" the bigger mics are especially prone to this effect. Sennheiser has quite a few variable voltage mics available, AT almost ALL of theirs , older SONY studio mics dont like 48 at all, they get reeeeaaaly heavy on the proximity effect. Give em 18 they will slap themsleves silly. Figure this, two 9 volt batts ,they take the FULL out put of the Batts , rather than building in a Voltage amplifier ( saving space and energy) Give you a nice 18 volts regulated phantom, with the system drawing typically around 30 ma. the ability to use 12 volts input ( Car battery or whatever) so you could have power for days , 1/8 stereo connects , ( computer sound card , MD, Dat, ) AND the hutspa to put a line in , you now have overdubbing . two MDs and some mics , latency free Idea catching ...............for 100 dollars????????? Also one of the reasons regular mics do not work with MD is this. A Balance XLR mic is Ground(pin 3) Negative( pin 1) Positive ( pin2) the positive and negative DO NOT translate to stereo inputs. Stereo Mics are wired Dual Mono,( Ground,positive-Ground Positive) A mic cable MUST be rewired from XLR to Dual Mono , to do this buy an XLR plug for the Mic in question, and a stereo cable 1/8 plug on the end ( old headphone cable, etc) Take the ground wire from the cable and solder to pin 3 of the XLR plug, take pin 1 and link it to pin 3 inside the plug with a small piece of wire, then wire both the red and white wires (left and right) to pin 2 of the plug. then you will get what the mic actually sounds like with the MD plugged straight in. I have used a bunch of Rolls stuff , both in and out of the studio enviornment , 10 band EQ, PA71 7watt amp, earlier mic preamps , and I beat the crap out of them and they keep going . I dont think I have ever treated any of my gear as rough as the rolls stuff has been , backpacked knocked around, fall off the speaker cabs, Table , etc, the little PA 71 7 watt amp , a killer studio bass player from France stole it from me ( well begged me for it actually , traded a few bottles of VERY good french wine) Also Dynamic mics wont need Phantom power , just plug em in , it Will be a different character to the sound though , so dont expect a Dynamic to give you a condenser sound.
  14. Hey King , I appreciate that you know a little about mics so dont take me wrong when I say this ok? Most XLR mics although Low Impedance do not have the PROPER inductance , and Impedance to work directly with MD recorders. The reason Mics like the AT 822 work so well with MD is that their output is regulated by a circuit that allows for it to be used with a great variety of inputs. If you plug a AT 822 into the 1/4 " inputs of a mixer that has both XLR and 1/4 it will sound like crap, if you run it thru a transformer it will be to hot and be distorted. If you run from a 1/4 female to XLR cable that is JUST a cable no trans. into the XLR of the mixer it will sound fine , kind of low output actually. The Shure mics , are designed to work with the impedance of a mixing board , and the associated mic pre's , The arent designed for the MD preamps. It used to be when the MZ-R50 was popular there were a buttload of mic pre's for the MD available . I had two of them. Currently (and I reccomend everyone check this) Rolls has a VERY nice small two channel BATTERY POWERED mic pre for video people But it is perfectly suited for MD http://www.rolls.com/products/mx34.php klik it or copy and paste , this will let you use whatever mic in what ever config you wish stereo ,dual mono X/Y, M/S ,1 channel or two I am a recording engineer , and I have used practically every mic made, experience with the SONY MP3056 mixing board , as well as the,Allen Heath , etc, all the way down to the little Berhinger back pack board UB 502 , Each mic has it own Character and personality , and you have to listen to them to know what they will do for you and your equipment ( that means take your MD and associated cables with you to a store and try the mics out) a pair of AT 3032's and that little pre , and most of you will be happy campers ( the Earthworks are what I am saving up for)
  15. Today , (I live in Japan ) I read the news that one of my all time hereos ..... took his last breath. Brad Delp, Lead vocalist of "Boston" the greatest Rock band , the band that opened so many doors and eyes , for what would become progressive rock, died on March 9 2007. I have "Boston" the first albumn on prerecorded MD , I want Pink Floyd "The Wall" and Kansas " Leftoverture" & "Point of no Return" also I would like to have all the Classical releases . TC
  16. Audio Technica AT 822 Comes with a 1/8 TRS cable for connecting to MD ,DAT, Whatever....also it has a Low frequency rolloff that really takes the rumble out (very nice) Sony mics have a little warmer sound but the "Air" or high frequency spaciousness is missing.
  17. Hi I am new to this forum ,in fact I joined just to answer your post, I own the ECM 23 as well , also have a buttload of MD suff The specs are as follows Freq response 20hz-20khz S/N 70Db A weighted Dynamic Range 110 Db Max input 137Db Impedance is 200 ohms ( preamp recommended) DO NOT USE PHANTOM POWER!!!!!!!!! only use the power from the Battery inside . This mike is alsmost perfect for acoustic instruments if yu use a preamp. It has a Close Cardoid pattern not quite a Hyper Cardioid But a "Close Cardioid" Best recording technique is to have it at a distance of about 10-14 inches from your instrument pointed toward the most reflective acoustical point, add a little midrange and cut just a little high end off , that will take care of any white noise, and give acoustic clarity. The best Mike I have ever used for the minidisc is the AT- 822 from Audio Technica, I have info on preamps for MiniDisc that will make everyone happy ,one I will share here ,.....Rolls MX34 ... http://www.rolls.com/rollsproducts/ klik that or copy and paste, then in the drop down box at the left select MX34 ..........you will like if you email me I can send a pic of the shematics to you ,
