Gurus, wizards and pros - I am looking to buy a sturdy mic stand than can fold into nothing and is under ~US$100. I can see I will need this to do recording in the future. Just to get above the crowd noise it is a must. So, if you can, please fill me in.

I am sure that SONY is able to pursue more than one technology at the same time. And there is always the example of how well MD sells in Japan. The RH1 demonstrates that the interest is there when they offer a good product. I hope that SONY will learn from this. They most likely have missed the opportunity with this format. I am grateful for my RH1, however.

GM - Yes, I found that out and am trying to get etree to connect to my torrent file. When I make a torrent with TorretSpy I get a message that the attempt to access has "frelled" and did not work. Frelled??!! Was bedeudet "frelled"?? With etree I can get the torrent made in BitTorrent or uTorrent no problem but then it does not connect to etree. I think it is a bad "announce" address, but am not sure. Schade aber Ich warte.

OK, finally found a way to upload the files. They are MZ-RH1 PCM > WAV > FLAC level 5. ReplayGain was added to the FLAC files as these were recorded at 15/30. Next time 17/30. Mic input was set to low. The mic was on a table in its small stand. Next time I will lug a real mic stand and get higher up and away from the crowd noise. I hope folk-rockers enjoy this session. Any helpful hints on how to improve my recording technique is welcome. This is my first shot at a large live event. OK, got a torrent uploaded to etree. I have checked the D/L and it works. A few other folks are D/L'ing right now. The equipment was up to the task but the audio is not all that good due to me not having a mic stand to get the mic higher and above the crowd noise, and there was plenty of that. Let me know what you think and any hints you might have for making it a better recording. Thanks, all, for your help right from the start. I would still be fumbling around and lost without the help of A440 and other knowledgeable and kind folks on this board. Ciao4now http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=503414

Not a bootleg!! Sheesh, you're taking all the excitement out of my life. I have so cleaned up my act that most Mormons lead faster lives than I. I kind of liked that "illegal" aspect of recording. I was going to get a car and soup it up like crazy, put stolen plates on it, and then put the MD's in quart Mason jars and stash them in the trunk and drive fast as hell home with the headlights off. That was next. Now you tell me I can't do that??!! Woohoo! Why am I doing this taping then? Sheesh. You really want to spoil a guy's fun. ;o) Thanks, I was not aware of the subtle differences. These are legally recorded concert performances then. Phooey. ;o) I made the track marks between songs as DaD was all over my ass because I did not have track marks on the HMR file I U/L'ed to them. Same with the other two performances. Nasty buggers they are.

All - OK, I have jumped through all the hoops I found on etree for U/L files. When I used their recommended torrent creator I get a "freller" error. Woohoo. Life is one long class. So, I am waiting for the etree gurus to tell me WTF a "freller" error is. In the meantime I am making it available as a "trackerless" collection of files through uTorrent. When etree gets me indoctrinated I will also post HMR and the other two on etree, and links here. I am re-recording Freak Mountain Ramblers from the PC WAV file through optical out on my sound card to opt-in on the RH1 and then putting in the track marks. Did this for HMR, and then learned that that TM should be just before the next tune starts and not half way between. A whole new vocabulary and syntax. Michael Hurley is doing a gig out here in town in the local upholstered sewer on the 26th and I would like to make that one. Very small venue, about the size of a living room so I could get in pretty close. I will use a mic stand this time, oh yeah. Cheers

Perfect A (Should be A+!) - These were recorded PCM and uploaded to WAV and the compressed to FLAC as the traders all like. Thanks for the info. I will see what they want and comply. Rock on!

Wizards and regular folks, I have these three artists, Freak Mountain Ramblers, Michael Hurley, and Holy Modal Rounders all recorded live at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR. They are not studio quality, but they are good. How or where can I upload them to be shared as legal bootlegs with other folks. Dime gave me a really hard time over my first efforts at uploading them and banned me to the nether reaches of the universe. Thanks

I am just reviewing the last couple of posts and wonder, again, why SONY continues to stop just short of a complete package. I guess it is just "the SONY way." Kind of like the cow that gives good milk and then kicks over the pail.

Well, I have an optical out on my sound card so I can patch that to the optical on the RH1 and have a pristine same-as-original Hi-MD. Is that right???
-
Perfect A - I checked all of those. Write protect tab is closed. RH1 is plugged in to the wall. It is a recording I made live. I did upload the MD to the 'puter. Will that make a difference to the RH1??
-
Hi - I have my three Hi-MD's I recorded lat Saturday and want to insert track marks in the proper places but the RH1 tells me "cannot edit." Is there a way to insert track marks after the disc has been recorded to???
-
The MZ-RH1 will upload any and all MD's, including those recorded on other MD recorders. It does this digitally, not in a real-time record. And it does it quite nicely.

OK, it was the Freak Mountain Ramblers, Michael Hurley and the HMR. The FMR were good, Hurley was not quite as good and HMR was a third place finish. No binaural: I did not want to sit reasonably still with the mics in my ears, plus we needed a mic stand to get the mic above the folks in front of us. The sound is so-so. I do not think binaural would have worked. Clip attached. 1_002_2007_01_06_21_44_14.mp3

I am driving up to Portland, OR, tonight to catch a local band, The Freak Country Ramblers and then the Holy Modal Rounds of the 60's and 70's. Gonna look like freaks and flashbacks tonight. Both bands are supposedly taper-friendly so I am going with the RH1 and a MS-957 for stereo in PCM and my old MZ-N1 to record binaural in SP mode. Woohoo. Geek fun tonight! I will let you all know how it went and if I get a good copy will U/L some sound bites. Cheers

Have a Michaels or a Ben Franklin's? Sheesh, we do not even have sunlight. We get it pumped in from Portland. ;o) We have a few arts and crafts stores around and I will check there. Thanks for that info. Cheers -
Folks, ran across this just now. Half way down the page there are some links of testing of the noise, accuracy, separation and so on of the RH1. Check it out: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....mp;#entry461675

A440 - I understand that the noise floor is also raised but with digital it is way less a problem that with analog(ue) was. No tape hiss and so on. It is worth a try. The pro at this is the guy who started Mobile Fidelity. He was the consummate train recorder who was trackside with his mobile gear often, and that was the source of the name, Mobile Fidelity. I do not know if he published any info on his tricks. I do know he used a huge reel-to-reel tape recorder.

The Best Batteries To Use For Your Hi-MD
boojum replied to Christopher's topic in Essential Hi-MD info/FAQ's.
My solution to the extremely high price for MZ-NH1 batteries was to buy the Macally IP-A481. It is a very large LiIon battery which will give up to ten times the power as the included LIP-4WM, and is roughly the same size as the RH1. Reviewed in Dutch here elsewhere the needed info is usable for non-Dutch readers: photos and a table of how long the Macally lasts driving the RH1 both with and without its LIP-4WM. All this at about half the price of the LIP-4WM battery. It is an option worth considering. Also, it can be charged using the wiggy little SONY charger for the RH1. -
I do not know if I know what I am talking about, but - if it is low gain would not normalizing the recording bring it up to as loud as it can get without clipping? Once it has clipped it is ruined but raising the volume after works. And, in digital the background noise is minimal, too.

Perfect A - I have a head at home much like the Neumann KU-100. I got it for free which is good because it sometimes causes me a lot of trouble. It always wants to go where I go and is a pest in that regard. However it is excellent for binaural recording. I have used it with the SoundMan in-ear binaural mics for a glorious recording of a tianguis, or native market, in Ajijic, Jalisco, MX. Even got some binaural publisher to use it and a NPR show, too. How weird is that to happen to a hack like me?? So, I will probably take that tired old head with me along with the SoundMan mics along with its attached MZ-N1 and lay down some SP tracks in binaural while I am laying down tracks in stereo on the RH1, if they symphonic band is rehearsing tonight. If not, I will stay at home and watch a movie or listen to Bach. Bach rules! -
Suggestions for library organization/formats

I get a memory size error when trying to D/L the file. I have 1GB of memory. -

A440 - these are interesting. There is also one made by some guy in England from two sieves stuffed with absorbant material and wrapped in an old pair of pantyhose. It is pretty head-shaped and there is the Brit kinkiness of the pantyhose; what a deal! That rig is also supposed to be good. A human head is best, of course, but I do not want to sit stark still for an hour or more. Nah. I will try the styrofoam head, but wonder why it is not more used as it is so easy. There has to be a reason folks are making these discs and homebrew marvels. It cannot all be their geek nuttiness, although I am sure that is a part of it. -
You answered it.

Has anyone tried the Macally IP-A481 with the RH1?
boojum replied to boojum's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Re charging: I can charge the IP-A481 with the SONY charger for the RH1, but it does not show me the blinking green light that I get by charging it to full on the USB port. I does show the three green LED's when I push the "check" button to indicate it is charged. It seems to offer a lot more than the standard gumstick LIon from SONY for about half the price. Update: OK, it does charge fully and eventually the blinking green "I am fully charged" light comes on when plugged into the SONY RH1 charger.
