That's it...I've Had it...Done with Hi-MD & Minidisc!

I give up! I have been a minidisc user since it first came out. I loved the format and recording, ease of use, etc. for years. I had high hopes for the new format and a whopping 1gb on that small little disc so I bought a NH600D as soon as it was available. Converted an entire hi-md disc worth of tracks and ran into the first problem which I had with the NetMD format. A limitation on the characters in the track titles..still! I had it with this piece of Junk SonicStage and I've had it with Atrac! Let me simply drag and drop a native MP3 straight to this 1gb blank (if I could find some!) and play native on the unit. Sony would OWN the portable music market if they would allow that. 1gb blanks @ $3 a piece would fly off the shelves! But alas I am dreaming....I also have my NH600D for sale and I am looking for another format. Sorry Sony you blew it!

I just about feel the same way. If it wasn't for it's size and ability to record uncompressed pcm I would switch. If anyone knows of anything that is as small records umcompressed and is EASY to transfer to computer for cd burning let us know. I know that the renderer program is out there but I can;t make it work for me.

i dont understand the charicter limit that your talking about

ivegot almost 500 tracks on one of my minidiscs and they all have names over 5-6 charicters long aside for maybe 1 every 10-20 traks and plus al the 20+ grupes that ive named and i havent hit a charicter limit

and playlists and groupes work the same way there isnt MUCH of a difference....(im not saying there arent any)

and the part of the check out check in stuff that was taken out from the older sonicstages was the number of times that you had to check out....now unlimited....checking in is just sonicstages way of saying :erasing the track from minidisc::

and last but not least the problem with availibilty of discs is just something that sony cant keep up with because they have there heads up there asses

and have no idea what the concept of supply and demand is

maybe they will let other companies allowed to start making the discs instead of being the stuck up bums they are trying to get the money they can by being solo on the product for a while

*****if you are talking about a charicter limitation on individual tracks then your tracks must be over 100 charicters long because i did a test and was able to burn 5 songs with a hundred charicter long title each

and still could have made it longer and hit no limit*****

tell me if im not understanding this im just trying to see what yer probs are exaclty and im sorry to hear that you areunsatisfied with you purchase.....

Moving to correct forum...

There are many who feel your frustration with Hi-MD. It isn't a new technology, really. It's Sony milking a dying cow. By keeping compatibility with the old MD format, it's somewhat crippled the advantages of Hi-MD.

I'd like to see Sony take Hi-MD to the next level. Fix the problem with track transfers from the unit to the PC. Make 1GB blanks more available. Remove SonicStage from the equation entirely, or rework it in a decent fashion. Allow for native playback of at least MP3; I'd prefer native playback of MP3/WAV/WMA/AAC/FLAC or some other form of lossless audio codec as well. Allow for pure PCM recordings via analog sources without DRM of any kind, and allow for drag-and-drop transfers of files to and from the unit.

However, none of this will ever happen.

Sony = the Japanese word for shortsightedness.

Edit: By the way, those 3-pack Hi-MD for 10 bucks things? That was Sony's little attempt at scamming us. I've seen them; they're nothing more than regular 80min MDs preformatted for use with Hi-MD units.

Actual Hi-MD 1GB blanks are around 7USD for one; that is if you can even find them.

I don't see how it was scamming people. They didn't state that they were Hi-MD discs, but rather were just 80 min MDs that had a sticker saying that they are compatible with Hi-MD, and then went on to list the time for each recording format.

Hmmm... I probably shouldn't mention that I can walk 3 blocks down the street to Fry's and find 20+ Hi-MD discs on the shelves. :ninja:

Quite simple: Reread the title of this department.

It says 'User Opinions'.

Thanks. I was hoping that it would be clear enough in the title, but perhaps I'll have to reword it. Many people seem to find great offense at me moving posts here. If you actually LOOK at the posts within this forum I've done the MD community and the businesses who make MD units a favor: the reality of this format and what irks people.

I'll think about starting to use Hi-MD when Sharp comes up with a Hi-MD unit. I won't commit to a one-vendor format.

Ditto.

Well, I think, Sharp should start as quickly as possible, so when you have the money, the second generation of units comes out with improved quality and features...

We also need a "Do not suck" Mode button in SonicTurd, ASAP. :rasp:

Ok, seriously. If a bunch of hobbyists have been able to put code together to remove the nastiest pieces of spyware, perfectly emulate a Sega CD, Turbo Grafx, Neo Geo, and even the Nintendo 64 (with the help of a 3D card), build together a CD from scratch and burn it, bit by bit...

WHY CAN'T A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY, WITH SEVERAL R&D DEPARTMENTS GET THEIR DARN SOFTWARE TO WORK JUST FINE? God forbid if Nero, MAME, ZoneAlarm, Norton, AdAware and Firefox had the same "functionality" as SS.

*Rant mode off*. Sorry mods. I'm starting to have problems with SS on my brother's laptop. Man. :whatever:

hell, i wouldn't buy one, just pointing out that they have a large computer department that ships out laptops & desktops in multitudes. proving your points i guess sonictage is a major part of the included soft/bloatware

I am very happy with my NH900. It takes a no more than five minutes per cd [that includes transcode and transfer], Sonicstage nor Simple Burner has never crashed and uploading is flawless; Marcnet's utility rocks, btw. Live recording with the NH900 is really nice, except the whole default AGC pittance, but other than that I'm in love. The functionality of this device is really fantastic.

I'll chime in with my results w/ the NH900: solid recorder (other than that lame AGC setting as Kurisu points out) with great battery life recording, especially using the AA/gumstick combo. I really like this MD and I am getting used to SS and have had great results with the uploads (as long as I track long PCM tracks BEFORE uploading). I would recommend the NH900 to anyone looking for a recorder, if you want it for listening as the primary use, go for the MZ-NH1 or the NH800. Looking forward to more improvements in 2005.

Took the family up to Ohio in the frozen snow for Christmas and the drive from SC was great due to the limited MD change now that I can put 10+ hours in Hi-LP on one standard MD. I had a great time scrolling along and that 40ELK remote makes life simple and exciting!!! Get the upgrade remote and a better battery and you just might have the best MD around these days (for now at least, still have my fingers crossed for a Sharp Hi-MD). Happy 2005 to you from snowed-in in Ohio.

There is clearly a serious problem with Sony products wonderful though they are in terms of the Hardware and design. There is clearly a problem with Sonicstage, it's very much hit and miss whether it continues to work once you've managed to start it up and it's ridiculously sluggish and there is no proper search facility allowing you to type in keywords. It's not satisfactory to blame this driver and that, I have never had any problems with iTunes! Sony need to look towards the wonderful simple yet reliable and responsive iTunes if they want an example of design and functionality! I have experienced HiMd, have a 1 gig mp3 player and was considering replacing my iPod with the new 30 gig sony mp4 player as I feel its a superior product. But no way Jose! Not until Sony sort out their incredibly crap software. On a more frivolour note Sony would sell more and be more popular if their products had easier more memorable names! Who the hell remembers or knows what a NHDW 54317 is ow whatever for christs sake! :)

im fine with my himd player

got it refurbished at a sony store for $100

its the nh600d

i only wish it had an ac adapter, a remote (it only has a remote port), and the ability to record

but then again i only use it for music......

my idea about sony is

if they are to lazy to make sonicstage really great

then they should just allow some other media players the right to use their format

like musicmatch, realplayer, winamp, etc.
