Kaotic
Sony PSP will be recognised as usb mass storage device and user will also be able to drag and drop MP3 files. this device will also accept jpeg files and sony's atrac3plus audio format. now this is first device from Sony that will support MP3, since the annoucement of supporting MP3. CNET's article is that mean, ability to support natively MP3 on Hi-MD is not far behind?
sxc
It is the first Sony product to support MP3 since the announcement, however it is not the first Sony product to support MP3. Clies, CD Walkmans, DVD players and home-theaters-in-a-box have supported MP3 for a while, and more recently that Video Vaio Pocket, and the NW-E70 and NW-E50 available in some parts of asia have been able to play back MP3s natively. xispe
"Kawanishi also mentioned that the PSP will be able to play back video files in H.264/AVC MP Level3 format. Sony Computer Entertainment is debating whether to release a tool for the PC that allows users to convert videos on their computer to the supported file format, Kawanishi said. " ahahah! nice.. we can play mp3 music, but for playing videos it's necessary to convert to that wierd format... "it makes me remember of the good old times when we had to convert everything to ATRAC"!    ... damn it, i'm still converting MP3 to ATRAC
mutant1345
HI-MD playing back mp3 there was a thread on this but i laugh at the thought of it......... as for the psp....im grabbin one as soon as it hits stores the games are supposed to be phanomenal and the video thing increases my excitement even more, i dont care too much about converting the video to a new format.....the music thing on it probly wont be much anyways i mean its going to be running off falsh memory anyway what amount of music can you put on that, and still have room for yer game saves? ......Sony hasnt messed up much on the gamming part of town but the portables have been going down hill.... now we shal see what happens when sony combines portable with gamming!!!! i hope to see something fruitatious come out of the situation
skmetal07
oh man im getting so sooooo excited for this too. cannot wait for this thing to come out, i dont mind the whole video conversion thing and the mp3 thing, all i want it to play games! O/T but has anyone heard about the PS3? heard its gonna have a "cell processor" in it, or something to that effect. wow, can't imagine what advancements intech are next with this! Christopher
Okok, it'll support mp3, but there are no definitive plans for UMD writers. So, that means the only "support" you'll see is for the memorystick or perhaps wirelessly?
mutant1345
there was talk about wifi in the psp, people could go online at wireless networks in there houseor at an airort for that matter jetblue supports wireless at airports! man a umd writer would be pretty nifty....hopefully sony will make some umd players for portablilty in the next generation of md.... those little discs have almost got 2 gigs of space on em....n they are eve smaller than what we got.... sony should leave old md behind and start a new with this format instead.... sxc
Unfortunately, at this stage UMD will be a ROM format. There are likely to be movies released on UMD format - great for train / plane etc trips. But in order to make you buy both the DVD and the UMD format of the movie, there is no video out on the PSP so you won't be able to hook it up to your TV. Hopefully the battery life of PSP will have improved by the time of release. Early reports put it at 2-3 hours while watching video which is useless for a long trip. mutant1345
yes i heard that the battery life of psp will be somewheres in the 5-6 houre range now but i could be wrong, but i know i read something on it. as for the umd being a rom format only......sadly it all seems to true...... would be nifty though
mAjEsTiC
SXC : yep i hear that FFVII-2 : AC is coming out as an exclusive for the PSP...this is only a rumour though and it was spread quite a while back...not to sure if they've decided to change that...but in terms of the battery life Sony's quoted around the range that mutant1345 said above... Syrius
Just to point, that releasing FF: AC as an exclusive for the PSP, would be as stupid as releasing Jacko's "Dangerous" only on Minidisc, and nothing else. They have to promote their product, right; but leaving DVD and PS2 owners out in the cold is business suicide if the movie is a hit. Unless of course, it's like FF Spirits Within. That movie should have only been released in those RCA high capacitance discs. Maybe it will be exclusive only for a short time, then they'll release it on DVD. aeriyn
It was my understanding that Advent Children was a Japan-only release, in theaters and otherwise. Portable gaming systems don't have a terribly large appeal to me; I use my MD player far more often and there are many many situations where portable audio can be used to while away the time when something that requires your full attention would not be practical. I can't see myself spending the 80USD for a GBA-SP, much less close to 200 for a PSP. Making UMD a ROM-only format seems like Sony is still the Japanese word for shortsighted. Hyena
Making UMD a ROM-only format seems like Sony is still the Japanese word for shortsighted.Lots of people are saying this, but really I don't understand why. Sony designed the UMD to be used with the PSP exclusively, yes? If that is the case, then what point is there to have it not be a ROM format? The battery life of the PSP is already pretty terrible, (So people say, I think it's so-so) so what would be the point of having the UMD writeable? As sxc said, it's a ROM format at this point in time, but wouldn't that be logical for the current purposes?
aeriyn
Well, I somewhat gathered that UMD... Universal Media Disc... would be used for more than PSP, simply by its name. But maybe I'm reading too much into the situation.
Hyena
Well, I somewhat gathered that UMD... Universal Media Disc... would be used for more than PSP, simply by its name. They named it the Universal Media Disc because it can hold more than games. Games, movies, and music, all for playback on the PSP.
aeriyn
Lame. LAME. L-A-M-E. Definitely not getting a PSP. And Sony still means shortsighted in Japanese. I was honestly more interested in the media format than the PSP itself; like I said before I don't have time for portable gaming. Too much music to listen to, too much trouble to get into.
Christopher
From what I've been reading very recently, the battery life will be very disappointing for games and this will probably dissuade me from buying the unit. Too bad, Sony.
