howdey, this is to all people with a ps2 and an entertainment system...

if you dont know already sony has released the announcment that ps2 systems are going to be produced three times thinner thn the ones available now....(three in an old ps2 and six in an x box)

everything is going to be the same on the unit and it will even have ethernet built into it and sell for about the same as the urrent ps2s.....

anyways there is one thing changing on this unit and that is the disc tray, :ninja: some say this is crucial to the unit fiting in an entertainment system, because now the disc will go in just like a psone with the flip lid on top!

im pretty nutrual about it and if i ever need to replace my ps2....would try to get one,

but what is your take on whether this will criple entertainment systems without enough space to allow that lid to open

is this a mistake by sony mad.gif or is this a good idea  ??

Little PS2 = no hard drive.

Suck.

Yes the hard drive only is used for FFXI right now, but Square is releasing two more games that will use it, and I suspect that developers will continue to create new MMORPGs or other games that make good use of the PS2 hard drive.

Anyways, I think it'll sell a good bit, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone I know. The PSP is just around the corner and the PS3 isn't too far behind. Those two devices are going to make the PS2 look like a Model-T car.

I heard they're moving to Xbox.

You will note there are still mounting points for screws on the back of the new PS2 and an unexplained notch on the bottom of it. So it's safe to assume the hard drive will attach to the bottom and be secured using screws to the back.

I really don't like the design of this new PS2. Not only from a aesthetic point of view, but the fact it doesn't allow for the tardy HDD. So you can't run the linux kit on it or the games that require the HDD. Although having said that, we'll never get the games HDD in Europe, so the latter is a non-point for us Europeans.

Indeed, but I still think it's a bit late. I wonder if this new unit will run hotter?

I don't think it'll run hotter, SCEI have been working to reduce the size of the chips (by reducing the process size) for years. I also believe the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer have been combined into one chip. These efforts reduce the heat produced, therefore reduced the cooling required, but also makes the chips cheaper to produce. My late version 9 PS2 runs cooler and quieter than my venerable version 1 and my US version 7.

Final Fantasy XI was released in Europe last month.

True, however this seems to be the PC version rather than a HDD reliant PS2 version. I did find a pre-order for a PS2 XI but the price is too low to include any bundled hardware with it. However the games HDD is nowhere to be found in Europe, at least in the 'land of fish and chips' here.

Edit: Please do prove me wrong...

In actuality I have a PS2 HDD, it was part of my PS2 linux kit, but you need a utility disk in order to format it so it's compatible with games. But hey it's no big loss very few European games, if any at all, would have the code to acknowledge the existence of the HDD in the first place. *sigh*.

Edit 2: Looks like I extinguished another thread...

i actually agree with you guys about the problem with the HDD...i've managed to get FFXI + the HDD and i really don't want to lose it..plus in terms of pricing it's the same as the normal PS2 (in Aus newayz) but i probably won't be getting it since the PSP and PS3 are coming soon...
