Audio-Technica A500/A700. =P

I'd say go with the A900 as I like these cans myself, but your budget doesn't go quite so high. The A500 or A700 should do you pretty well. Also, check out the Sony MDR-CD780. Generally it sells for about $100 US.

Again I'll recommend the Beyerdynamic DT770/80 PRO. Look for them used; you may find them for around $110 US.

A headphone swap along the lines of the MD Swap would be a neat idea. You could sample different phones, preferrably burned in, well maintained units and get an idea of where yours stand or what you'd like to buy.

Sony 'eggos' 66s and 77s?

For when I have the dough, these are my front runners.

I don't want anything IN or pressed up against my ears for comfort's sake. I also don't want anything too bulky. I [obviously] want superior clarity and good bass representation. From what I've read about the d66s, they're not OVERLY bassy? That's ok with me, so long as the bass is balanced with the rest of the sound. Do you who have them agree with this so far?

What do the 77s offer over the 66s? I also read about a modification I could make to boost the bass. Know about this?

How about availability to the USA? Something gave me the impression these are hard to come by. Maybe people are waiting long for 66s from minidisco and 77s are only available in Japan?

Finally, if you know of other models that satisfy my requirements, what are they?? For now, let's say price range notwithstanding. I just wanna know what's out there.

Hey...you asked!

MDR-D77 are incredibly difficult to find because there weren't very many of them made as far as I can tell.

Actually the D66s are slightly bass-shy. The cotton mod (acoustic damping the interior of the "eggo" shell with cotton ticking) improves the bass at the price of detail and clarity.

Seriously, if this is for portable, I urge you to try an IEM (canalphone). Some of them aren't very comfortable, but the portablity factor is very good and nothing isolates like an IEM. I use the Shure E3c myself and it is so comfortable I can sleep in it (using the ultra-soft sleeves). Sonically, the E3cs are my cup of tea except for the mildly rolled-off highs, which I can deal with in exchange for the detailed and clear sound, excellent portablity and COMFORT. The Etymotic ER-4P/S have a sound I really like more (especially amped) but they seriously do not like my oddly shaped ear canals!

I wasn't too keen on the "it goes WAAAAY the hell in there" aspect of high-end IEMs when I got my first pair, but now that I've owned the E2, E3c and the ER-6i (which I didn't really like) and listened to besides the ER-4P/S, I definitely can say that I'll never use anything but IEMs with portable unless I need an open phone (in which case my KSC-75s come into play). biggrin.gif

Hmm... maybe I'll get Sensaphonics one day. cool.gif

well, i guess this time it should be higher than 100... so maybe 150-200-220?   maybe..

I'll toss in a vote for MDR-V6 (7506) if you're budget is tight ($100 or less), as these can be had for less than $80 in many places. And if you got $250, go with MDR-V7509. They carry the typical Sony sound signature out of the box, heavy bass, birght highs. However, they carry the reputation of one of those headphones that can reveal tons about the original source, highly analytical type of headphones. I use these more for listening when I'm doing light editing or mastering, and for those purposes, they do the job well.

For fun, I'd recommend Technics RP-DJ1200 if you can still track them down, or PX100. Good stuff, especially the latter.

Aeriyn,

IEM= In Ear Monitors, right? As a drummer, are the IEMs you refer to something I could also use while a smashin and a bashin? If so, I might be able to kill two investment birds with one IEM stone. OK, that was stupid, but ya know what I mean?

Yup, in ear monitors, such as Shure IEMs, Sensaphonics, Ultimate Ears, etc. The Etymotics aren't really IEMs since they don't fit very securely in your ears and are not intended to be used while going through a series of wild gyrations. tongue.gif

Shure has some pretty good monitor setups, wireless transmitters and receiver bundles with an IEM included, but they're kind of expensive.

I use the Shure E3c (which is the consumer version of the Shure E3 stage monitor, there is no physical difference other than color between the two) and I lurv it. happy.gif

hahaha, i guess for the time being ill just stick to what i have. i have been known to ruin things by ripping them open and staring at the insides (not having a clue what the inner workings really are). i want to save up for this Zen Micro! and pass down my well used ipod 3rd gen (off the market) to my sister, who is the perfect user of one. she doesnt really listen much so the 8 hour life should do lol.

You do know that the life of the Micro is only about 12 hours right? On the other hand it is a good deal smaller than the 3G iPod. It seems to be a good unit throughout; not one of Creative's usual lemons. Although, I still consider the Mini and the Rio Carbon to be superior (and the Carbon has very good battery life at the expense of a slightly weaker headamp).

about that battery of the zen, do you think you can charge one battery while using the other?

No. You can only charge the battery inside the unit itself. However, you can do what I did with my old DS8 before I got the gumstick charger; charge both batteries, when one drains, pull it out and use the new one, when not using the player, charge the empty. Always keep one charged and you'll never run out of juice on the go. laugh.gif

I've found that I only need to charge my iPod Mini once ever two or three days, although I plug it in every night anyhow. Never know when I might be out and about somewhere or stuck waiting and want some tunes. happy.gif
