I will investigate into the battery life, keep an eye on this thread!

Fantastic news but Just my luck, as soon is my timer cradle is built Sony bring out new models with buttons in different places. I will have to carry on with my MZ NH-700 for timer recordings in HiSP.

I intended to buy a second machine for playback anyway but now I have even more to choose from. Can you guys recommend a machine for play back (mainly) I only record MDs using optical interconnect from the DAB Radio and will continue to use the NH-700 for that.

I would however like a new player that has a better quality output DA converter etc.

I will be playing back through headphones and HiFi system. I like the sound of the NH-700 but I am sure there are better sounding machines out there now.

Thanks in advance.

i'd find it hard to believe there's no mp3 unless it's an orphaned unit from the first gen. otherwise you'd be screwed if your discs were recorded in a mix of hi-sp & 256 mp3, half your tracks unplayable? the whole disc not playingback?

I love the look of this unit. I use a player unit already, so this would be logical new unit for me as well. However, I do not put it past Sony to not include MP3 playback on this unit, thereby limiting it's appeal. This IS Sony we're talking about.

These units look impressive:

If it is possible to load directly mp3's into the unit, without using either sonic stage or simple burner, and the unit sees the mp3's like my DNE-300 mp3 cd player, I would be very happy.

I use a macintosh, and I was able to make an MP3 CD using toast, and it worked on the DNE-300 CD walkman I use to replace my bookshelf stereo's built-in cd player that died on me.

I prefer minidiscs for when I go outside, they are compact, and much less bulky than a cd player.

If the new HI-MD players behave like an external drive, and you can copy MP3's directly from the finder, that would make the unit somewhat mac compatible. No ATRAC but having an mp3 compatible player would be great, especially if it beats the IPOD with its easy to change batteries.

Have a nice day,

Georges in Montreal
