Should I take my RH10 to Jury court house?

I have to report for Jury duty tomorrow which basically means I sit in a room and wait to be put on a Jury. If I'm lucky, they won't need me and that's the end of that. Either way, I'm going to end up waiting a few hours and I want to take my RH10 to listen to music. The thing is, when you enter the court house you have to remove your personal belongings and put them in a bin that goes through an X-ray screener. My question is, will this screener damage my unit and/or the discs? Thanks. Edited April 16, 2006 by Chris G

It’s unlikely that the security equipment will damage your deck, or your discs. I suppose something like that could happen depending on the intensity of security equipment, but I have yet to hear of someone who has had this happen in an airport, or other high-security place. So, you should be OK. When I first read the title of the thread, I thought that maybe you were going to secretly record some testimony or something.

Oh! Put your deck and your discs with your keys and coins, in the bowl outside the equipment before you walk through. Then you should really be in good shape.

Thanks for the reply. My unit will go in a bin and then pass through an X-ray screener. I will walk through a metal detector. I'm not concerned about the metal detector. I'm concerned about the x-ray screener messing up my unit or the discs. I'm taking just to listen to music while I wait.

My MD's and equipment past several times true such X-ray scanners on airports and they NEVER messed up any of my electronical equipment. If that would be possible they would warn you to put in no equipment because damage could occur.

So from my experience: no problem at all!

But in a lot of airports, the signs tell you that they are magnetic media friendly (at least the last time I flew they did.) Even still I think you will be fine.

i have a feeling they are going to tell you NOT to take it in; in fear you may record some unsuspecting lawyer and client ranting some evil mischiefs.

i would ask them on the first day; then bring it in on the second.

Nothing to worry about ...X-ray`s are not going to harm your MD player & it`s discs

I'm not sure about the Jury rules in the US but in the UK whatever happens in the Jury Room is BY LAW 100% secret and penalties for breaking it are SEVERE.

Unless the US justice system is a bit more liberal in regard to Juries DON'T ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE MD RECORDER INTO THE JURY ROOM. Any replays that the Jury need of the trial, Witness statements etc etc can always be called for by asking the Foreman of your Jury.

I suspect that if the case is a long one you can take a certain amount of "personal" entertainement to be used in a Hotel etc. You might be allowed also to deposit stuff in a Locker before going into the Courtroom.

Remember also that Jury Selection is part of the judicial process and as such potential recordings (doesn't matter that you only want to use the RH10 as a player) could compromise the justice system, so explain what the device is and why you want it when you report to the Courthouse.

If you are lucky you might be allowed to take it in but I would be very surprised if you are still allowed to have it at the "Interview Stage" if you are likely to be quizzed as a potential juror.

There would be many people interested in the "Banter" or conversations going on in that room where you and other people are sitting waiting to be called for Interview. A MD with some of that info on it could make or break a case depending on what was said. For example a person's private predjudices could be captured which was hidden from the Jury selection panels such as "Hang 'em and Flog 'em", or "Give them 50 years".

It might seem Boring and Trivial to you but to a high flying attorney / Lawyer some of this info could make or break a case.

Don't whatever you do try and "Sneak" unauthorized gear into the Court. If it's a high profile case and a Mis-trial is declared you are not only in Serious trouble from the LAW but there could also be ramifications from "Other Interested Parties" and I leave that to your own imagination.

As a Photographer who'se often done PJ assignments on all sorts of topics I can assure you that what I'm posting here is NOT B/S.

Don't do anything stupid. It's not worth it. Even on fairly trivial cases.

ASK FIRST.

A few days without music sounds bad but it's better than risking losing something else.

He's not on the jury yet, just up for possible selection. I doubt many people would be daft enough to try to covertly record legal proceedings. Basically he has to sit in a room and wait until his name is called.

The X-Ray scanners won't harm your MD unit or discs in the slightest. I've passed mine through numerous airport and embassy/govornment building scanners and it's never been harmed. If it was an all-metal unit the X-rays wouldn't even penetrate to the disc!

Thanks for all the input guys. I was not selected to be on the Jury so that's the end of that. I ended up not taking my Hi-MD just to be on the safe side, considering it's not just a playback unit, it's a recorder, which is a no-no in the courts.

I brought mine to the court house, the cops at the security station at the building entrance didn't even ask about it. I left the unit with the secretary when I had to go up for the selection process just to be safe.
