Are you still using your MD deck?

I use my JB980 ALL the time. I have it set to pause-record while listening to the radio in case I hear a song i like, and when im not doing that I listen to my mixes and albums I have in LP2 which gets 2 cd;s on one disc. If you think LP4 sounds awful on a portable, listening to LP4 on a deck is actually barable. I also like the extra editing features like splitting tracks by milliseconds or seconds or whatever. The jb980 is also a net md desk, and I use that to transfer tracks to md from my computer.

Another great use, is if you have an mp3 player and the output of it isnt strong enough you can connect the output of the mp3 to the input of the deck and bump up the input signal so that its as loud as a deck or a cd unit.

I have it connected to my micro system (2 x 80 watts rms).

Heres my review;

Maybe the difference is listening via headphones vs. listening via loudspeakers. Good headphones can be much more revealing.

Personnally, i use my MDS-JE500 deck from time to time to play some old SP recordings, which i don't have in any other form.

But even on a deck with NetMD you can can't transfer tracks to real SP from the computer can you? SP can only be achieved in realtime?

BTW sweet looking set up all in silver.

No you're right, but unless you have very good hearing or are just able to notice even the finest detail, you wont be able to tell the difference between SP and LP2 when the deck is doing the recording anyway. I cant tell the difference between Optically recorded cd tracks when im listening to LP2 or SP. Trust me, you wont even think about recording in SP when you have a nice deck. :ok:

I didn't like LP2 on a portable. Though it wasn't unlistenable.

I use my PRO Decks extensively. Selling my JE470 though.

I looked up the spec on that pro deck. But what in simple terms is the big advantage of the pro tec. Seemed to me the main advantage was for editing if you were doing some serious recording. Overkill for most home recording.

Me?

Sharp SR70/Sony G750/MZ-NH700. Only really use the HiMD though, and mainly for recording from other sources. Phones is a mixture, MX500/Pana JE50/Some older full sized Senns dunno the number. Usually play back my FLAC/MP3's from Zen Micro/Shuffle through an old but high end Sony Midi system.

Why?

The problem with getting a mdlp deck and having himd is that you have to have the music you want to listen to on two mediums. Obviously you can connect the line out to the deck and turn the input signal in, but its the same quality. The pro decks are made to be more rugged, and be able to slot into racks, and generally be abused lol. The home use ones may have the same same quality, at least i wouldve thought mine would lol  If you can splurge I would demand that you get the JB980. The only problem with my deck and the other newer ones is SMCS protection. That means that if you record opticaly from a cd, you cant connect your portable to the optical out of the DECK and record, it will just give you an error message. Other than that little glitch, I love my deck. I got an extra 2 years warranty on it too. Obviously you can get it in black too. You can go for second hand but it doesnt have the 'chistmas feeling' when you open it up, and when you look at the volume levels going up and down etc lol.

I sometimes connect my nw-hd5 to my deck when I really really really cant be bothed to be swapping discs and I dont want to listen to more than 2 tracks by one artist etc.

The JE470 is just a home deck,

These are our Pro decks:

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-E10.html

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Tascam_MD-350.html

The Tascam MD-350 has Balanced XLR Inputs/Outputs, both the MDS-E10 & the MD-350 have optical outs. Those features combined with the editing features, speed control, and TOC RAM editing (on the MDS-E10) were the differences between these pro decks and standard MD decks. The XLR in particular on the MD-350 we needed for good implementation into our studio.

^_^

I'm actually debating selling one of the pro decks to get some cash towards the RH1, but I haven't decided which one yet. Probably the MDS-E10 because it lacks the XLR. But like you saod, they would be overkill for anyone without a studio or need for the extra features.

I still use my MDS-JB940 every day to listen to music, both over headphones and speakers. I do believe its days are numbered, though - music servers with Burr-Brown DACS, FLAC support, and Wi-Fi are just more appealing to me nowadays. Having all of my 500GB uncompressed music library all in one place, without having to swap discs is pretty incredible. No ATRAC compression and no limited-capacity disc swapping! I'll hold off for a while longer, though.

I'm about to buy a JB980. How much should I expect to pay for one secondhand?

I would do an eBay search on completed listings for JB980 or minidisc deck. Good luck.
