lmnopq Posted July 25, 2006 Report Share Posted July 25, 2006 you can get twice as many songs on with lp4 but now and again you can hear that it's not top notch audio... i masked some of this with trying some better suited headphones. that were made by sony. you might do 1 minidisc with 10 albums on it in lp4, like i have, stuff i don't listen to as much. and do your favourite 5 albums on one minidisc in lp2... Levanel Posted July 26, 2006 Report Share Posted July 26, 2006 Well, LP4 certainly beats recording in SP Mono ..I usually put ambient music on LP4 because it sounds better (yeah, I know that sounds ridiculous). LP2 is definitely the best tradeoff between CD quality and space on an MD. Just make sure whatever you're recording to this mode has a bitrate higher than its encoding. That is unless you want loads of artifacts when transcoding from a 96 kbps mp3 file to LP2's 132 kbps. ZosoIV Posted July 26, 2006 Report Share Posted July 26, 2006 IMO, LP4 is only good for voice recordings, especially if you use a mono mic and a plug that balances the signal across both channels. Music encoded with LP4 sounds like cacca - yeah, it's nice to have so much music on one disc, but good will that do when you can't stand to listen to it? bobt Posted July 29, 2006 Report Share Posted July 29, 2006 Let your ears be your guide, record a few songs yourself, then playback on shuffle, if you can't tell the difference, go with the lower bitrate. When I bought a used Sony MDLP head unit for my new car, it came with dozens of mostly LP4 MDs, mostly rock.While their sound is not as good as LP2 and even more obviously not as good as SP, it's still listenable to me. This led me to play with LP4 at home, on my MXD-D400, MXD-D40, and JB-940 decks (via my main home systems), as well as my MZ-R500 (using headphones)at work. I have found even in LP2 with EX90's the detail is incredible but, its flaws are also revealed as well. As said before let your ears be the guide. This is just my opinion that is all it is. I have alot of recordings in LP2 and it is ok. It allows you to travel with a minimum compliment of disc but, I don't really enjoy them. I'm satisfied with LP2 but not happy. I find LP2 (listening to hip-hop) via Audio-Techina earphones to be more than acceptable. And I fit approx. 15 albums on a single 1GB Hi-MD blank. At home I use 352kbps (via my MZ-NH900 line-out) for non-headphone sessions. It's all about trade-off between space & quality. (also, the headphone quality is very important). coolkid Posted August 18, 2006 Report Share Posted August 18, 2006 I choose the recording format according the sound quality of the source.WHen I use optical cable to record CD quality music, I choose LP2When I use jack to jack to record music with Line-in, I just choose LP4.
