Transfer of data from Hi MD to PC

Hi all,

I've had a good look but perhaps I'm just being dense because I don't seem to find the exact answer to my question. I have a MZ-NH700 Hi MD which I use to record audio when I go out on paranormal investigations. Recording seems to go find and I don't have any problems with the MD unit itself. I use a high-capacity battery and I can pretty much get 5 or 6 hours of continuous recording no trouble.

I feel that the transfer of the recording to my PC is painfully slow, even for a relatively small sound recording. For example, I recorded just under 3 hours of sound and it has already taken over 4 hours to download to the PC. This is my third try as the first two times Sonic Stage just stopped responding. I use Sonic Stage because I don't know of any other software I could use to do the transfer. I believe I'm using the latest version of sonic stage but right now it's in the middle of transferring and I don't want to stop it. My PC if modern and quite fast with appropriate USB ports.

I could really do with some advice here guys. I don't like spending so many hours just transferring the files, in fact, it would be quicker and more reliable to transfer the files from the line-out to the PC line in, but then I don't get the quality I need.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Thermocline

Ho Ho Ho - Chortle Chortle Chortle

Quite funny actually...

I may have fixed this problem. I downloaded the newest version of the software from the sony site and did a clean install. I also changed the USB port I was using. Seems to be somewhat faster now. Still slow, but better.

I can't remember exactly, and my memory might be faulty but I think a full 1GB HiMD takes about 20mins to transfer for me. My 2GB Flash MP3 player takes about 3-4mins.

Hi there,

I'm also having a slow transfer problem.

My Sony Vaio came with Sonic Stage 2.1.02.10010, so I should look into installing a newer version... but I just read a few things about issues... but also that they are the exception.

Mine has been taking almost an hour to download when the 1GB Hi-MD is pretty full up.

I'm not clear on the switching from USB 2 to USB 1.... I know my computer has USB 2, and assumed that the MD was using USB 1, is there something I need to do to make this compatible?

I also just frickin' lost my third recording of my band playing live... it was taking FOREVER... then I realized it was stuck on 99% of the transfer... the red light wasn't going on anymore... I have the MZ-RH1... so I put my computer to standby, came back this morning, and hit transfer, it was at 70% right away, zips through in about 30 seconds.....

And whamo... no data in Sonic Stage, and now the Minidisc says "no track."

Why I love to have computers...

Any insight/help/sympathy would be great!!!

James

Are you on XP? 2K , or NT system , SS is up to 4.3 , but 4.2 is quite stable and can be found here at the MD forums.

If you can get a Macbook you wount have a prob at all , the "MD Transfer " for Mac is much simpler and absolutely stable.havent lost a recording yet. on the Mac your RH1 just comes up as a Hard drive , then MD transfer converts everything to WAV as it is imported.

With SS , you have soo many optionsand it might be onfusing at first , you do have to set up your preferences to get the best out of it.

Get rid of SonicStage 2.x. Please. Immediately if not sooner. It is a piece of garbage software verging on malware.

You probably got a SonicStage 3.4 disc with your RH1. That's a much better version, and the easiest thing to do would be to just install that off the disc. But 4.2, which you can find in Downloads here, is an improvement on that.

Any problems with any later versions are trivial compared to the horrible early versions of SonicStage.

You lost your music because in versions before SonicStage 3.2, you only got one chance to upload your recordings. If the upload failed, the disc was still marked as having being uploaded, and then the next time you attempted to upload the same track, SonicStage 2.x would just erase it. No warning, no undo. Completely evil. That seems to be what happened to you.

After SonicStage 3.2, you can upload again and again. And again. So if the upload doesn't go through, you can try again without having your data destroyed. Install either 3.4 or 4.2 and you won't ever have this problem again.

BACK UP YOUR LIBRARY FIRST! If you do the backup you will never probably need it. But if you don't you could lose everything.

Try just installing 3.4 (from the disc) or 4.2 (from Downloads) on top of your 2.x version, and if you have any problems, then check this FAQ to completely get that dreadful 2.x out of your computer.

USB 2 is completely backwards compatible with USB 1, so don't worry about that. You don't have to change any settings.

A full disc will take some time to upload, but I'm guessing that your problem was with the old version of SonicStage, and a newer version should speed things up.
