DVDs? who watches DVDs anymore??

Me, and probably most people. Ther is no replacement for DVDs yet. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are not out. If you're talking about Divx, there is no device that is fully 100% compatible with Divx/Xvid/MP4 out there, unless it's a PC.

Thanks for the info.

It's a very cool device. Personally, I find watching movies on a special device like this one, and even PSP quite interesting, as I'm so used to watching on a computer screen...

But, I don't think many would be interested, though

Btw, 'imagine' maybe right to some extent. Sometimes good quality DVDs are not availible to some of us, but not the internet. There're very high video and audio bitrate DVDrips out on BitTorrent, eDonkey links. In fact, I just got one from eMule which is the three Jurassic Park films as brand new Superbit(another Sony remaster, haha. Only availble in Japan, I doubt) releases, and the rip included the DTS soundtrack!!! So, for now, I don't watch DVDs anymore, saving some bucks

DVDs? who watches DVDs anymore??

Probably the 5000+ customers we get on a quiet week that pay my wages and also buy mp3 players, cd players, cameras etc from me and thus allow me to afford cool s**t. oh, and me. No download can beat purchased DVDs. There's no artwork, there's no surround.....

Anyway, i'd say those suckers will be expensive.

The new DVD WALKMANs are surprising affordable. Anyone getting a piece?

Actually, portable DVD players are dropping in price. Many of them (Toshiba, etc) are selling uner $200 nowadays. The only deciding factor for price is probably the size and quality of the LCD screen.

The D-VE7000S doesn't have s speaker built-in, but it does have a dock with speakers included. Also, you can turn off the LCD. Interesting since according to Sony Japan's spec, it can read MP3s burned on DVDs. :) Too bad the size kinda big, and no Atrac support.

Indeed - every time I pass through the airport lately I have been eyeing these up. Seriously tempted to get one (either that or a white PSP)... So far, I have managed to resist but not sure for how much longer I will be able to hold out.

I bougth a DVE7000S yesterday at the Sony Store. It was $299.99CAN, minus about $60CAN in discounts that I managed to get.

I'm quite happy with it so far. The sound from the dock speakers is much better than I had expected. Great picture quality with commercial DVDs, a bit slow starting up though.

So far I've been able to play commercial DVDs, and a home made DVD that had some AVI files on it. These were downloaded TV shows made with the XviD codec (the player supports DiVX). I also converted a show on my VAIO from AVI to regular DVD format using Click2DVD and that worked fine too, although the result was not using the screen fully (I guess a 2hr movie requires a dual layer DVD to fit without compressing more). A video CD I had also played fine, but again it was compressed so no full screen.

Maybe Sony should do a firmware upgrade (if that is even possible) to allow for enlarging the view. The kickstand seems a bit flimsy. The screen is highly reflective, so I have some doubts about using it outside in the sun.

Overall I am quite happy with it.

Are you sure about Divx playback? There is no mention of Divx compatibility anywhere on Sonystyle or Sony Japan announcement.

Another question, have you tried JPEG viewing? Are the pictures stretch out to fill the widescreen? I bought a Toshiba portable DVD player, and found out it always stretch non-DVD sources to fill out the widescreen, and there is no option to disable that feature, making it USELESS for photo viewing, considering it has SD and memory stick slot.

I'm 100% sure about DiVX playback. Says so right on the box..in fact if you were inclined you could buy or rent DiVX films online as the player is indeed a certified DiVX player, with a device code for buying or renting at www.divx.com/vod . Personally I won't be buying or renting anything online as I have loads of things to watch already.

As for JPEGs, there's a button ruight on the front (LCD Mode) that you use to toggle from 16:9, 4:3, and LCD Off. I just popped in a photo CD and you can apply those modes to photos. The photos on the discs I tried so far do not take up the full screen in any mode. The unit really should have a zoom or something (like the PSP does).

Interesting! I shall return to the Sonystyle store I went to couple days ago armed with a DVD full of Divx/Xvid files. :)

OK, Sony USA is officialy a retarded company in my book, controlled by a bunch of morons.

If you check Sonystyle Canada website: http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/P...00n45940n100175

You'll see on the spec list, the DVE7000S definitely supports Divx. However, as I mentioned, no Divx compatibility listed at Sonystyle USA for the EXACT same product model number. Well, I am curious, and armed with a DVD filled with Divx video files, I went to a local Sonystyle store.

I asked one of the employee about Divx compatiblity on the DVE7000S. She said she doesn't know. I asked her if I can play my DVd on the display unit. she said she doesn't care because she wanted to know also. I put the DVD in, the unit is reading it for a couple of seconds, then it listed the folders I have in the DVD. However, it doesn't list any files! The unit just shows empty folders. WTF? That means it cannot recognize AVI files. I told her that the Canadian version is actually Divx compatible, and Sony Canada website even said so. She said I'd better import one from Canada.

So, here we go again, sony USA goes above and beyond to neuter USA version of their products. first, they are eliminating kanji compatibility. Now this. Sony USA executives are a bunch of racist morons.

So Canadian friends, go flock ebay and practice free market. Promote this obvious stupidity of Sony USA so nobody buys the US version of the unit.

Pathetic, really. Sony should split the company to have the entertainment arm separated, so then maybe the electronics arm will return to its old glory. It's probably only protection concerns that's making the US version no-divx compatible.

One question is, these things are region-specific, right? It would be nice to have a region-free version. After all, a portable DVD player would benefit from true portability.

Regardless of being portable or not, most portable DVD players sold in the US are region 1 and all (meaning they can only play region 1 DVDs and non-regioned/region all DVDs). Again, another stupid consequences thanks to regioning. Funny thing is, the common Joe doesn't really know/care about this regioning. Even the PSP is region locked for movies AND music UMDs.

My player is Region 1, although the manual says it can indeed play region free DVDs too.

PS I agree that a portable player should not have region restrictions.

If you go back to the store you can verify DivX support by looking at the back of the unit for the DivX logo

There's no DIVX logo, only compact disc, DVD, and MP3. Again, I put a DVD filled with Divx videos, and the unit does not recognize the files at all (shown as empty folders). As I said, I'm not disclaiming that yours cannot play Divx. I think Canadian version does support Divx (as I pointed out from Sonystyle Canada), but US version does not.

There's no logo on the USA one? That is a strange situation. I wonder why they would bother including DivX for Canada's smaller market and not include it for the USA.

I took photos of the back of my player, note the DivX logo etc.

Told ya, Sony USA is retarded. You should start spreading the news about the Canadian version supporting Divx so nobody will buy the US version.

OT, but the current issue of the New Yorker has a long article about Stringer, talking quite a bit about the "silo" system there and its influence on Sony.

Cheers.
