Does this Hi-MD player play MP3s or does it covert them to ATRAC3plus? Is it a downloader only, or does it have optical/line inputs?

No it is not like the MZ-M200 (MZ-RH1), the later model that can convert MP3's. You'll have to use Sonic Stage . I'm currently using SS 4.3 Rev 2, on Windows 7 and works fine.

The microphone jack, doubles as a mic/optical input. On your optical cable, the end you plug in the player is a 3.5mm adapter. Hosa makes them, the 3.5 mm adapter.

I always seem to get a really flat sound using optical. Either I transfer songs to disc , or record in real-time from the Line-in to a source for the best sound.

Sony Fan, given it's a holiday weekend and the OP may not be available to answer, I got the info you need right here:

The only units that will play Mp3 natively are the DH710, DH10P, RH910, RH10, and RH1.

Dude, you forgot to mention it would do the same on the RH710 as well, If you had the choice of either the DH710, or the RH710, I'd take the RH710 anyday because of its additional line/optical input and remote/phones jack, two items the DH710 lacks, but you do have to do the volume hack on the RH710 as it is an EU/UK-only unit.

In my limited experience that is self-serving rubbish by the tech at Sony (not the first time a service centre has justified its charges wrongly).

There is almost no difference between 37LT and 39LT. The former works perfectly. But there's a problem with contacts. The only difference is there's a HiMD indicator on the display of the 39LT, and you really do not need it.

I've tried changing the model number (on a 700) in Service mode, and there really is no difference in functionality even with the radio attached. I don't think there's extra electronics in the 800.

Bad buttons just mean bad resistances, means cleaning needed. The new remote you got is obviously "clean".
